Im super excited about my first adventure race this coming June. Not only am i looking forward to the personal challenge but also that it gives me the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for an amazing charity organisation - Mission Australia.

Until now I'd never run more than 5km's let alone 40km's with a back pack. The training in itself i find is a great motivator and I expect to be super fit when its comes to start time in a few months time.

Does anyone have tips or hints when it comes to carrying adequate electrolytes and / or salt tablets. Adding this to the food, i have a feeling my back pack will fill up pretty fast...

Wishing everyone well :-)

One advantage of the powders (or tablet powders such as Nuun) are that your body gives you an indication when you need more (or less) - it will want either electrolyte drink or water. They do also break up the monotony of the taste of water in the desert. A mixture of these and the tablets is good as it is also possible to get sick of the taste of the electrolyte drink. If you were to take half tablets and half powder work out the volumes based on the instructions on the packets. Example: if it says take 2 salt tablets every hour when exercising and you expect to take 40 hours in total then take 40 plus the powder. For powder if it says dissolve a tablet in 500 mls of water and you expect to drink 10 liters a day then take 5 tablets per day. Starting with these volumes in your training and see if you feel you need more.

Thanks Sam, I've read up quite a bit and have started to experiment with different electrolyte powders and salt tablets. My current challenge is working out what combination will work best and what is easiest to pack and doesn't take up too much space. The salt tabs I got are very small and come in a 100 bottle

Great to read your first blog. Keeping your electrolytes balance during the race is the one of the most important things. I highly recommend reading the expert articles (http://www.racingtheplanet.com/store/expertadvice/), especially: 1) the role of electrolytes; 2) hyonatraemia; 3) heat related illnesses.
