First: It really makes me happy and encourages me to read your comments, I wish I could answer you all but I can’t from the cybertent here.
Yesterday it was time for the long day, it came to be 72 km in total. No big bodytrouble, a sore groin on the left side but that was all. Me and my new buddy Brett decided to try to do it together as we matched up so good the day before. The plan was to walk uphill and run on the flats and the downhills. It started with a 1600m elevation over the first 30 km and we stuck to the plan, powerwalking, feeling good, talking. At the first 3 checkpoints we came in top 20, confident, no issues. I will spare you details today but we struggled on, up and down. The total elevation was 2400 meters over the day so there was a lot of walking. With around 30km left we were abit tired but we were also past our lows, Brett had one after 45 and I somewhere around 55, I think. We could see other competitors in the distance and started sensing the smell of blood…
Pounding on, gaining on them we chewed them up, one by one, until we got up to the top of the last climb. From there it was just a 5km downhill run to finish and the guy ahead of us, Paul, had seen us and gave it all he had. So did we but we couldn’t catch him. So we stormed in 11 (Brett) and 12 (myself) after roughly 10h30m.
Sticking to the plan, working hard without gaining lactic acid in the climbs, running where we could, we did it! I was so happy having Brett there all day and I think he was happy having me there.
Did you know, elephant meat isn’t that bad once you get the taste for it…
Miss you all! When I get home and organized again we’ll have a barbecue on my patio.
Still in chock,
Fredrik

Never ever thought I’d be up there. And I was feeling good all the time. When Jay, head of the doctors, asked me at the last checkpoint how I felt I answered ‘Kicking ass” and it was really from my heart.
So, after a rainy night we woke up to a cold (2-3c) but clear morning. Sleep had been so-so but ok. Got breakfast and coffee this morning anyway, sun up and it stayed up all the race. First leg was easy, tried, as always, to keep a low pulse without letting the field slip away too much. No probs until the last 500meters where I stepped, or plunged my foot, into a mud hole, up to the knee. Had to stop in a creek to wash up. Leg 2 was a hard climb, 700 meters, almost no running. But the scenery… WOW!!
Maybe halfway up I teamed up with Brett, a really nice Australian guy, and we did then rest of the race together wich was really cool, chatting away about this and that, running on flat and downhill, walking uphill. We were really matched tempowise and had a great day in the hot sun! Ran in to the camp together and split the ninth place (I told them to log his chip first).
Had to go into my tent to have a little crying/laughing moment for myself…
Time? Around 6h15min I think.
Looked at the overall so far and I’m 13 before today!
I keep writing this but if someone would have told me this 4 days ago I would have laughed so hard that I probably would popped a vessel or something…
Claude (check his blog too, Claude Kollin) came in walking on a good time and today he is determined to continue. Not in yet, though.
Tomorrow’s “The long day”, 67km, and I’ll be more than happy just to walk it.
We’ll see what happens.
Bye for now!

Hola! (sharing tent with Spanish guys and a Mexican girl…)
Today was… well, wet and cold. Rain all night, tents all humid and clothes damp. On top of that we overslept a bit so it got bit stressful getting all gear in order for the start. Tried to go really slow (Yeah, right…) in the beginning, after 5km there was a rather hard uphill section for the rest of the first leg, I hung in there, tried not to do anything foolish like try to catch someone or care if I got overtaken. Then came the rain… First as a drizzle and then as hard rain and strong wind. We even had a small hailstorm!
After the first leg it was better running but still bad weather. Got to the second checkpoint a bit tired but ok and got the information that this stage was shortened because of heavy weather with snow in the mountains (where we were supposed to run) and it was just 3km left. I looked over my shoulder and saw another guy just 100 meters behind me so I started running. I thought I would be too tired to run but made the last three km in 15 minutes and it felt good to be able to speed up after 20km of tough, cold and wet running. Need I say he tried to catch me but he couldn’t J. Came in 15 today…
Claude also made it today! He borrowed a couple of walkingsticks from one of the Spaniards. He (Claude) is a tough guy!
Now the sun is out, we’re slacking in the sun and worrying about where they will add the 18km we didn’t get to run today.

Today I woke up in a damp tent. We camped by a dry river but the ground held a lot of water appearantly and it all oozed up into our tent during the night. RACEDAY TWO – it really felt like raceday one as I had no intention to come here to race but my result yesterday gave me a different feeling for today… I’m still not here to race but you know me… Started off a bit too fast, trying hard to keep my pulse down the first couple of km;s but it was not easy… First leg was quite easy running, second too but after that it was slightly uphill, wich is ok, but big sharp stones everywhere made it almost impossible to run so I powerwalked most of it. At checkpoint 3 (30km) I was in 11:th place and feeling good but the walking took its toll so the last, fourth, leg saw me walking almost all of it. Got passed by one and ran over the finishline together with a german guy finishing 12, both of us. Lot of sweating today, not very hot but humid, humid.
Dead tired in my legs but as they felt really good this morning even after yesterdays beating I have good hope for tomorrow. I won’t compete! That’s a mantra I’m constantly repeating to myself. We’ll see how that goes. I came here to just do this and come back alive and well.
Small toe issues but nothing bad, body’s holding out well so far!
I’ll get back to you tomorrow.
Oh, and a funny thing has occurred: I’m starting to think in English! I speak it all the time, even with the guys from Norway and sometomes even with Claude.

No storm or rain last night although that was almost a promise from the weather guys. Nice morning bit a bit cold. Started at 08.00, everybody screaming and running off. Me and Claude took it really cool the first stage (10km) and made it as around 40 to the first checkpoint, pulse never over 125, mostly walking uphill. About one km into the second stage Claude’s foot started hurting and he told me to run on. So I did. Keeping pulse in zone 3/5 I suddenly noticed I started to pass other runners, one by one…
The sun got hotter, the sky was (is) totally clear and the temperature started to rise up to over 30 (38 now). Anyway, drinking good, taking my electrolytes I finished 16 (out of 113) just an hour after todays leader!!!
Sore but blisterfree feet, not exhausted. All good! Slacking at the campsite, waiting for Claude to arrive. I hope it won’t be in a car….
Oh, and we saw a wolf!
Bye for now and thanks for comments on the blog, it’s nice to read them.

After getting all our gear checked, getting our bib’s (nummerlappar) and tent assignments we were bussed here in the afternoon. I managed to get hold of some Nescaf`e at a departmentstore in Bole (forgot to bring it from home and risked getting too much blood in my coffesystem during the week but it’s all taken care of now, in the eleventh hour. J There will be no cellphone or email (not even the almighty facebook) contact during the week so this is the only means of communication. Just had dinner and sorting the gear out for tomorrow. Soon bedtime! Wonder if I’ll get any sleep tonight, tent’s been changed to concrete houses (that’s really a matter of definition…) because of risk for a stormy night and the floors are uneven bricks. Oh, well…I’ll write again tomorrow to tell you about the first day, I really look forward to the racestart!!

Claude has an upset stomach right now even though we both avoided the “spicy horseintestine” we could have had for breakfast
