well, writing this at 11.30pm as I made the long day in in 15th place in just under 16 hours. stoked- finally a glimmer in a sporting career filled with abject failure. very hot in the middle of teh day, took 45 mins at a checkpoint to miss some of the heat and rehydrate which paid dividends i think. got my second legs in the last 25k and ran quite a lot coming in.....anyway, im pretty tired, so off to lie down. hi to all- seems like there have been blog update issues....ah well....dk

well, lounging around in the sun today its 11am. all well. joe and adam stormd in to finsih well. still stoked with my finish, not sure what i did to end up feeling good the last 25k or so. thx for all the emails and comments, Rob, just so you know, i kept compulsory gear in my backi-i didnt dump any-RTP wondering when you are going to do the honourable thing and return your medal from last year. good to hear you are struggling with the urban singapore marathon....still not sure of overall placings, we cant see them, but we have 11k to go tomorrow. yesterday we ran through some old ruins- gets me prepared for Chch I guess.....
well, thats bout it_ see you all soon. Jack and Ash - if mum tells me youve been good, there may be some M&M's in my bag.....dk

no more beach holidays...seen enougth sand for the rest of teh year. tough day today in the heat, hoever managed to finish in 22nd place in about 7.5 hours. put the legs into action and charged upo the dunes in stage one and then hung for the rest of the day in the heat. yes those HK hills have some use. very hot in the middle of the day,and gnarly soft gravel crust to contend with. and at time of writing ( nearly 11 hours after the start) there are still 60 odd to come in. adam and joe continuiung their sterling performances. tomorrow will be tough in the heat yet again so will just be plodding in tomorrow and trying to get to the finish. thx for the messages, and big special hug to jack and ash-- miss you guys loads...

Great effort on stage 4 DK, v impressed. You'll be on the long day by now so effectively done so I really hope you get through it OK ... either way looks like you've had a great race and you should feel well proud of yourself.
I'm was trying to get some energy level up enough to go for a long run ... so best I stop assing around and get on with it!
Cheers .. great effort!

Way to do the dunes, man! You must be part camel! Very impressive on Stage 4. Don't know how I missed the spandex photos M mentions - will have to go look again! After all the whole point of the colored spandex is to stand out for photos, right?

See things are going well with you...at least I think I can see as the Cornish computer is producing very small print so hope I'm reading correctly. Fab job you're doing out there, keep it going. Shazza

DK it's good to see your mission of bringing the Mongolian desert dwellers into the 1980's with your fashion leadership (did tight aqua-marine lycra bike shorts ever really go out of fashion?) is having the positive side-effect of keeping your competitors at bay. You're doing an awesome job. Keep it up!
Posted On: 30 Jun 2011 03:27 am
This desert running thing is ssooooo 2010. It all hip hop urban ultra's these days.
That said, cracking performance on stage 4.
So what of the Gobi and its infamous frying pan. A top 30 finish........we know DK can!!
Give it heaps dude and just remember, the sleeping bag is only slowing you down!!!

You may not wish to see sand again this year....but you are a 'dune guy'! A photo of you from day 3 with mtns behind lifting your arm with water bottle, and a striding through the sand shot from day 4. Before that, I was starting to wonder if the photographer had in fact headed off to Singapore to take photos from the now famous 'self supported equitorial urban ultra' (I understand the hair styles are far better there - and presumably the fashions?)Results not up on this end yet, but I would think if you came in early 20's that would put you certainly in the 35- 40place overall. Fantastic day - hoping that the long haul you are on right now treats you well - no grass hoppers or city streets in the middle of the desert this time...A & J say miss you loads & will you bring home m&m's all our love M J A xx

Mate I am all out of superlatives...you just continue to amaze. Stay safe

Just to keep all of you updated as I dont have my own blog. I am about to leave the office and start stage 3 of my week long run home (aka the self supported equitorial urban ultra marathon). The conditions are hot and humid and the course will be varied with highways, bridges and parks. My ITB's (not sure what they are) seem to be holding up well but I do have a wee blister on the end of my big toe. I have spent most of the day deciding how best to treat this.
Wish me luck for the rest of the week and please feel free to post any messages of support on DK's post where I will respond at the end of each grueling day.
Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 08:02 am
Yeah, I'm with all the other posters. Really sounds far too easy so far. Why are we giving you guys so much credit? Really, our daily lives (especially in Hong Kong!) are much more challenging. Guess that's why they call it a vacation!
Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 05:28 am
Glad it's got a bit hotter for you DK as I know how good you do in the heat. Also really do think you'd feel cheated if you weren't really getting fried ... running! Uumm not sure that's wise! Looking good & keep pushing.
Cheers
Ali
PS raining in Hong Kong!

DK - enough about you. I am half way through my detox and excelling. will need a new wardrobe by the end of day 3. am still undecided how i will spend the $1,000 you wagered against me. Double or quits i go an extra day??!
Keep up the stellar performance.
Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 03:28 am
Keep on going DK! Glad to see you are all doing well and looking out for my hubby behind you! Good luck today on the dunes!
Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 01:01 am
DK - blogs say you have 'trick' to getting large amounts of water out of your shoes after river crossings....Im left to wonder just how tricky that process can be? Fold shoe in half & stand on it to squish out? remove inners & twist like a towel?
Sand dunes are up next - that was your day in Namibia, so we are all positive about it being the same again in Gobi..
luv M J A xxx ps Rob, you may be onto something there...you can brand your 'self supported equitorial ultra marathon' as the 'the ultra you do from home'.
Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 12:03 am
DK
I found it interesting that my usual run home after work was in fact as far as stage 2 of your 'ultra marathon.' As I was carrying my wallet and blackberry, I was also self sufficient. As I plan to do it every day this week I have renamed my daily run home as the "self supported equitorial ultra marathon.'
Geez, a little fog, wind and rain and you guys seem to go to jelly.
27 June 2011 03:28 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi
ok - well after a chilly nite last nite we woke up to fog and mist...the start kept getting delayed and as such the course had to be shortenend....to dangerous to have people wandering around the hills in the cloud trying to find pink markers every 200m...Mrs kelliher would not want to know DK was last seen heading to Krygistan.....
finished in around 60th today in 2.19 i think. quitechilly and rainy near the end of teh race, but felt pretty good. ITB's bit sore but par for the course i guess. Adam just behind me again today-doing very well indeed... Joe Osha continues to excel in taking the most amout of room up in the tent ( as we said thats what happens when your the secodn most powerful country in the world), and Adam clearly the most organised with little piles all set out in the corner of the tent. Sandy suckling in out tent - 51 and nails most of the guys, esp today.... a good bit of aussie/kiwi banter going as you canimagine
tomrrow looks tough with plenty of water crossings, and its cold and wet...we have teh heat awating in a day or so. anyway, off now to a sumptuous feast of recoverite and freeze dried beef stew

Hey, glad to see you still have the energy to give Joe a hard time! Keep it up! You know why you can't shake him - he just can't stand losing sight of that sexy spandex. Great job!
Posted On: 29 Jun 2011 12:24 am
And we have to assume that you take the prize for 'the most clutter' in the tent? Great to finally see a post - even if they are coming in bunches! NO results for us to see here for stage 3 as yet, sure you are still going strong!
26 June 2011 08:37 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi
well, after air china misplacedthe bags (not the end of the world, fortunately had 95% of what we needed in check in lugg) we made it. managed to get them back ( with wild and crazy airport taxi ride) with an hour to spare before departure. -note to self, dont get Concierge to translate ('need to get there quickly!!'). what i found interesting was the miles of windfarms and To Be Built windfarms on the bus-ride to the course_ plus the biggest cement factory i have seen. amazing the development going on , even this far into west china
So, day one done, think i finished in 39th, in just over 6 hours. not to hot, but some tough up and down. legs and knees not feelin the best for it, and bit crampy now' but have some time to rehydrate - and then onto the voltaren gel .adam and joe just behind me at the finish. whats the killer is the altitude< think we are at 2300m tonight and climbed 500m across the day. shufflin along with heart monitor going bleep bleep after 3k had me grabbin the rosary beads.
thats about it, look for my little 'samba shuffle' coming into a checkpoint on video....oretty sure theyre going to see the talent, recognise the talent, share the talent and put it on the website
hi to all......DK

Dear DK, Thinking of you and hope day two was a little easier on those tree trunks of yours. I have just tucked your son in bed for the night at my place and we chatted about how you might be sleeping on a thin bed roll nursing sore muscles and I asked him if you sleep like he does wrapped up in his sheet like a cocoon and he replied that he thought you did too except you snore so now I feel for the rest of the people sharing your tent.... I know you don't need many words of encouragement with your mental stamina as strong as they come but I liked this quote "When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on. "

Great work!! So pleased to see a blog after you missed check in day. Thought Adam must have started to rub off on you, and you may have been busy weighing your gear..... Jack & Ash very impressed looking at some shots of the mountains you guys were up and down during day 1. Ash said 'lucky he's got big legs'
Hope you have eaten serious amounts (while you can digest it!) to lower the weight of your pack - someone has a 6.5kg one?!?
ps Rob - clearly the answer is is 'D'. Loved your poem tribute by the way.
DK keep in the top 40!

DK, Many of us are struggling to reconcile 34km and 6 hours and 8 mins. In an effort to conserve your energy could you please select one of the following explanations: (a) my brookes beast got a slow leak (b) I got seriously lost turning the stage in to 50+ km nightmare (c) the scenery is amazing -- I spent hours enjoying my surrounds (d) I want to avoid the media that swarms the front runners (e) my lycra was too tight (f) my plan to scrounge food off others backfired.........where was rob c? (g) I missed the start as my moisturising regime takes longer in the desert (h) someone fell and they called for a crystal healer. You were the only one near by (i) the humidity played havoc with your hair forcing you to stop and reapply some product (j) you stopped to wrestle the gobi bear, saving many other competitors (k) none of the above (l) All of the above Well done dude. Top 40 place!! Keep trucking

Good running DK, by reading blogs most thought hard opener!! keep up with the rosary beads and magnets, they seem to be doing the job :) best of luck with stage 2, will be waiting for results.

"In the red corner, weighing in at 86kg, DK" - i just wonder which body is going to show up this coming week.... key challenge today is to see how much stuff we can sneak past security at HK Airport. I borrowed some charm and charisma from someone i know, so am going to turn it on as we pass throught those Gel Hunting X Ray Machines......see ya

My pack looks to be weighing 24.5 kg with 15 kg of crystals, however I believe its a price worth paying. Here are my selections for this trip:
Azurite - cures ITB syndrome
Amethyst - excellent for blisters
Calcite - helps bone strength after a long day running
Hematite - increases red blood cell count, a better option than chilli mac freeze dried....
Onyx - relieves chafing in hard to reach places.....
Quartz - an all round tonic, generally thought helpful with headaches and delirium
Onyx - energy field "rejuvenation" - I think this is better than perpetuum, although the jury may still be out on this one, call this a field experiment
Aragonite - absorbs all emissions from malodorous tentmates and oneself, hence its a "win/win" crystal. Damn heavy though...
Yes, there's more! as I am generally acknowledged as having an encyclopaedic knowledge and excellent taste in music from the 70's,80's, 90's, Here's a selection I will be humming each night in the tent and whistling louder than socially acceptable during the briefings. Will be on the iPod for people to borrow, but form an orderly queue;
Achy Breaky Heart - - Billy Ray cyrus
MMBop - Hanson
I'm too sexy - Right said Fred
Muskrat Love - Captain and Tenille
Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice
I write the songs - Barry Manilow
I am woman - Helen Reddy
Convoy - C McCall
Disco Duck - Rick Dees
Physical - Olvia newton John
Locomotion - Kylie
Mmm,Mmm, Mmm, Mmm - Crash Test Dummies
All of Michael Boltons hits....
Hey, if I leave the Onyx behind I could bring a speaker for the tent !!??!!............

Wow! A list of my all-time favorite songs! How did you know?? DK will you put together my next running mix?
Posted On: 21 Jun 2011 03:19 am
You left japan and weighed a ton.
Came to HK and started to run.
First the twin peaks "this will be a breeze."
The next thing we hear "I need help please."
Slowly but surely you picked up the pace.
To the point people think you quite the ace.
You tested your new strength on the African Coast.
In the Kimberleys....you impersonated a roast!!
Much time has come and past.
And with the help of the Kenyan you run real fast
So what of the Gobi and its frying pan.
A top 30 finish.......we know DK can
All dressed in white you not looking so fine.
But with a decent old nudge you will cross the finish line.
But no matter how ridiculous you look.
The DK groupies are on tender hook (s).
Go kill it!!

So, although I reckon I am still rehydrating from last years RTP Australia, I squeeze into last years lycra/spandex combinations again and head off to Gobi: Based on Sams advice there will be a portable jacuzzi on day 3 and 4 campsites, that got me over the line in signing up again. Getting to the start line in one relatively healthy state has been the main focus, second is attempting to stop worrying about how desert fashions may have changed in the last year. Training has been going ok, and with the humidity gods getting more active in HK, hopefully the next month will give some acclimatisation here in hk. So if you see a bald headed kiwi, clutching some salt pills whilst looking like he's clambered out of Tai Tam reservoir and got tangled in an ipod cord, feel free to help....

I didnt see in my future a time when I would be the one saying "'My husband?
