01 July 2010 03:28 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Day 4 completed and feeling ready for the long march!  Finished 84 out of 160 competitors today with 2 days remaining and officially completed 120:kms. Its been a terrific experience and the scenes were absolutely awesome.  We are offically in the Gobi Desert and the temps are circa hi 30C close to 40C. The day started with gravel trails trails which  turned into sand dunes uphill to CP1. We went up flaming mountain where  the monkey god put out the fire with his fun, or sometime along those lines.. The rest was traversing acorss hills and negotiating ravines within the hills.. The heat is taking its toll. A competitor just came in and puked about 7 times. The was another guy stuck in the ravines and the medical team had to run uphill for about 1 hour and the last update he was on an IV. The heat with the low humidity makes you feel not thirsty and all hell breaks lose. During the last 11K, it tIook me 1h45m and took in 2.5 liters of water at CP1 and arrived with dry bottles. As of 2.30pm, there are over 25 still on the course.
Feet are doing well and tapered the hot spots for good measure. Test is Day 5, 100K. Gotta stay hydrated and eat and eat.
I am sure there will be a lot of stories after Stage 5 which last for 2 days, no blog updates tomorrow as I will be busy.
I am so motivated from reading your emails and blog comments and keep them coming.
I will pace myself over the long march..

Thanks for all the emaiils and they truly insipiration. Stage 3 completed. Fun day started with cool weather which helped all blitz their runs to Camp 3. We started with running along a riverbed that destros wy your pace and feet. Throw in 6 river crossings along the way to CP 1. The rest of the day was more running on gravel roads and transversing hills
I have gotta lost 2 so far even with pink flags 25m apart. It occurs always on straight roads and the markers go left or right and I go straight. so far added about extra 3-4 kms....
We are staying in a village tonight that has a stream for washing and taking a bath. Trust me, its was so sweet to sit in icy cold mountain water.
We leave at 3.45am tomorrow 2 hrs bus ride to get to stage 4 for a 6am start. We are down at sea level and its getting hot. Yes, I willl drink lots of
water.
The body is doing well and eating as planned. The feet are holding up through the gravel and river crossing.
The warm up days (stage1-3) are over and days are gearing up for the 100km Stage 5.
Gotta eat dinner and start taping my feet and getting to bed by 9pm.

If not, Just think of our snow storm when the heat is overbearing...think about skiing in whistler and snowboarding too, Hope this helps in keeping your mind cool....;) go Pat go....looks like u guys are having too much fun crossing the river..Mosses parting the red sea and the people follows.

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 07:57 am

Finally, this is it... the long march. You are mentally prepared for this. Just be strong.

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 06:57 am

Stage 5 coming up 2morrow-Sam reminded me that 100 kms is 2 round trips to UBC from North Burnaby. So each way is 25 kms, not too bad when it is broken down like this! Totally achievable-yuk sounds like I am goal setting with my staff! So take it 2 steps at a time, savour your surroundings and viola, you will be at the finishing line. Looking forward to hearing all the details. Love again!

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 06:12 am

Have a good run Patrick. Enjoy the scenery, stay strong and be safe. =) take car, Oh

Thanks for all the emails and blog comments. Its motivating!
Day 2 completed with 3 CPs and classified as MD /M /M. We started wiht a climg and running ridges ffollowed by more climbing and downhills.after 90 mins, we were back at last nights campsite. Ironically, given all the space, we were backtracking!  After CP2, it was essentially a trek along a dry riverbed and along dirt roads. It was a heads down and doing the 16K.  We had 1 river crossing and many took the opportunity to clean and wash their gear. Another tip for future racers.
The scenery was amazing as we were running thru ravines at the foot of some huge mountains. I would imagine they were created from glaciers. Took pictures whenever there was a photo opportunity to share with all.
Physically, I am doing well, able to eat, drink, and pee, The past 2 days have been pleasant during the run, a cool and breezy. Feet are holding with small blisters on bottom of both feet. I would tape once I feel a hot spot and that has help manage the damage.  Even washed myself today!

Our campsite for Day 2 is located in a dry river valley, with cliffs on the right side and old scared burials sites strategically located around the camp.  We were told not to walk over or on them, it should make an interesting evening.

Love to all from Day 2 campsite. Miss all at home Jenny, Nik and Paige.
Gotta get go eat my tea and let others get their airtime.

27 June 2010 08:52 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

One  down and in good shape.  32K run today with 3 checkpoints (CP) with moderate / moderate/moderate&difficult course rating with the last CP at the day's finish line. We had magnificent views along the course which we needed to CLIMB UP to view. We even had herds of cows with the whole family out for a walkabout. I have this feeling the cows were strategically herded in place for us tourists.
I am feeling good aside from the freezing weather in today's campsite. We are at 2,100 meters and the temps will get cold tonight..I was toasty in my sleeping bag but may get cold tonight. Added to my low tolerance for cold will be a fun night.
Tomorrow's run will be 29K and will start with a MD/M/M course rating.
Its getting cold and I will sign off as my fingers are freezing.
Keep your mails / blog comments coming in! (You call also send me emails).

26 June 2010 08:45 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Pre race dinner was Koka instant noodles and canned sardines. Quite tasty n filling. The weather has been cool and its about 18C tonight at 9:41pm.
It will be cold for the next 3 days and will end wearing all my clothes tonight. The trip out to the campsite was filled with excitement as the bus had to transverse a few rather narrow diversions on the road.  Adventure even before we start.
I will call it an early night and get ready for tomorrow.  Love to my dearest and the 2 girls.

Hope you got a good night's sleep...you must be in the middle of the first run day as I write this from Vancouver at 5.45 pm on Sat. June 26. Looking forward to reading your thoughts, feelings after Day 1. T-6 days before I head to Singapore.....

Posted On: 26 Jun 2010 04:46 pm

Stay warm and happy. I see you ate as we planned......the last minute add on sardine and the koka noodle. Sleep well, sweetheart.

25 June 2010 06:42 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Perhaps a good way to manage pre-race anxiety is to concentrate on your day job. This is 180 from my previous races, where you go to the race site at least 5 days prior and get in your morning swims and rides along Queen K. But again, this is a 250K run with a full backpack.
The lead up to Gobi has been an adventure and surprisingly enjoyable. Going long is a different mindset and requires patience plus more patience.  Hopefully the weekend romps around the hills of HK and MacRitchie reservoir Singapore has helped build the patience needed.
So how does it feel to be T-2 days from the start of the race?  Calm yet excited. I had a good night's sleep (in the super comfy bed which I will truly miss) which is a big '+".
As with most peps, I triple checked the pack and looked at the massive amount of food for each day all ziplocked and labeled.
I should sign off and get my act together if I aim to get onto the plane today.  Look forward to meeting everyone in Urumqi.

Dedicate this to all the people who made this happen. Though running is an individual activity, the irony is that we don't get to run if others do not help.
A big Thank You to RTP volunteers, staff, Mary and Alasdair; Margie and Tessie plus XJE team; running buddies (Simon, Peter), Tobias for sharing his menu and stuff.
The Wei support team; Jenny, Nik and Paige - you gals are great!

Hello World, I am very excited to run the race next week! The day is approaching fast and I am pumped! :) To all who are racing, BEST OF LUCK! To all inspired, FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS! This was what I wrote to my daughter 3 years back: Your dad loves to run, it makes me more fun. I even want to run across the desert and that's not on a camel. On my birthday card recently, this is what my 11 year old daughter wrote: Your dream of crossing a desert not on a camel has come true! DESERT HERE I COME!
