Gobi March (2010) blog posts from Dan Parr

08 July 2010 01:01 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

And its over. What a week. A week that surpassed all my expectations, both in terms of personal performance and overall race experience. It was a week of huge contrasts, of massive highs and terrible lows. The passing of Nick Kruse was a terrible chapter in the 2010 Gobi March and it was crushing to hear that a fellow competitor had died. I didn't know Nick but he came to the Gobi for the same reasons as many of us - adventure, challenge, opportunity and dare I say it, risk. He wanted to pit himself against a fierce, magnificent and brutal environment, to test and challenge himself in a way that is all too rare in today's cosseted and comfortable world. That's a sentiment every competitor can understand and appreciate

My race went about as well as I could have hoped, apart from the fiasco on the last stage of the long day. Ultimately it didn't make any difference and I can afford to be prosaic about it. I can't deny that I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't win the long day, that's the stage you definitely want to win. Also the extra our of bumbling around the desert cost me the chance to go under 24hours, a benchmark I had set myself, However, I shouldn't be greedy and I'm delighted with the win.

For long periods of the race I ran on my own, and even when I had company, the language barrier kept the level of conversation to a minimum. I know some people find it very hard to run alone, some listen to music, others talk or sing to myself but I have got to say, I loved the isolation, the quiet and the sense of self-reliance. To come from Hong Kong, arguably the world's busiest city, to the middle of the Gobi wilderness was a huge contrast but the beauty of the environment, the vastness of the desert and the feeling of being completely alone was exhilarating. Its not often you get that feeling.

We finished the race with a 5km sprint. It was somewhat odd bearing in mind the distances we'd already covered but there were not too many complaining. Crossing the line was a wonderful sensation, knowing that I had done enough to win. However, for many of the competitors just getting to the finish if the primary objective. It was wonderful to watch as the people I had got to know over the preceding few days made their way to the end and conquered their own Everest. Every runner had a different story, a different motivation but the same end goal, to cross that finish line. Hats off to every single runner who got to the end.

I can't finish without saying something about my tent mates. The spirit, camaraderie, humour and goodwill in Tent 1 was magnificent. Everyone was supportive of everyone else, both out on the course and in camp - urging each other on, cajoling each other to continue, sharing in each others success. We must have been one of the only tents with a 100% completion rate and that is no co-incidence. Everyone performed magnificently and I think the only person who perhaps thought they had a bit more in the tank was Jude. He finished the long day looking so fresh it was ridiculous. The campsite looked like Omaha Beach and he waltzed in like he'd just stepped off the boule court. However, this means he'll be back for another and I have no doubt he will be pushing for a top ten finish.

Thanks to everyone who supported me on this daft adventure, for the sponsorship (we've now raised well over GBP4k for Sparks which is wonderful), for all the messages of support during the race, no matter how offensive. But the biggest thanks go to my darling wife who encouraged and supported me in what is an essentially selfish and indulgent pastime. The hours of training, the smelly kit, the obsession with calorie content and the time away from home. I ran for you and my success says more about your love and support than it does about my ability.

Until the next time sports fans

Dan

I think you are a 'chip off the old block' in many more ways than one.

02 July 2010 10:41 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

thanks for all the best wishes and emails, its making me quite nervous with all the excitement!

Here we are in the desert.  yesterday was 95% perfect, 5% disaster.  Conditions were great and I gassed the 1st 50km in pretty good time.  I had an hour lead coming into the final checkpoint and was home and hosed.   however, its never over til its over and the Good Lord gave me a salutary lesson today.  I was 3 kms into the last stage and could smell the finish line and victory.  I had an hour lead, plus the 30-odd minutes from the rest of the stages so the race was almost in the bag - almost.  after 3kms we came through a vine grove and I was following the pink flags which mark the route.  as I came out of the grove there were no flags and a group of kids playing with them, throwing them up in the air.  not a good sight.  I spent 5 mins trying to explain that I needed to follow them and  asking them where did they come from.  blank faces.  I set off into the dunes zig-zagging in the hope of seeing a flag but no joy.  long story short I spent an hour bumbling around trying the find the route.  I was at my wits end and out of options so I went back to the road to wait for another competitor. whilst on the road I stopped a girl on a motorbike who was holding 2  FVCKING FLAGS!! I asked her where did he get them, no response.  then, thank God, another local guy stopped who spoke English and I begged him to help. he asked the lady and then suggested I get on his motorbike and he would take me to the route.  obviously that's not allowed so I was shuffling along the road with this chap pottering along on his bike behind me.  eventually, after losing over an hour, I picked up the trail and set off into the monster sand dunes for the final 4kms.  it was brutal - hot, I had barely enough water and had already run about 100kms in total.  once in the dunes it was well flagged and I followed the footprints home.  Christian finished about 10mins ahead of me and the other Chinese chap, Penbin, was about 10mins ahead of him.   we were all bvggered.  I think I still have some sort of lead but not really sure how much it is and I can hardly bring my self to look.  as you can imagine, my frustration is huge.  I ought to be sitting here with at least 1.5 hours lead but now I'm not sure I've got 20 mins which means it is game on tomorrow over 20kms in the dunes.  not a pleasant thought.   anyway, I'm still in the lead and if someone had said that I was in with a chance of winning after the long day, I'd have taken that.

so keep your fingers crossed, no walking under ladders, no pairs of shoes on the table, no crossing on the stairs.  I'm running this for everyone who has sponsored me, everyone who has messaged me, mum, dad and nick, the gang in UK and HK.  And most of all, for the three inhabitants of 14B Arts Mansion.  I'll be home soon and can't wait to see you.  You're all keeping me going

Love to all

Dan

Truely awesome performance Dan - many congratulations on a fabulous victory. Very impressive! all that advice from Rowls obviously paid off......

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 11:11 am

Daniel an inspiration to all of us. Looking forward to that session in August buddy. Pre season training starts July 20.

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 10:52 am

Mate -- I am speechless, what an incredible effort. I knew you running to and from the office with bags of rice in your backpack meant you were going OK, but never really thought you might be that good at this ridiculous caper. Quite an effort. Congrats from all in the McDowell household.

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 10:34 am

We are so, so proud of you Dan! HUGE congrats and we hope that the first cold beer went down a treat! Your support spanned 3 continents as we were shouting louder than all the Vuvuzelas from South Africa. Now its 'Home Howard' for a proper celebration! Lots of Love Chris, Nix, Matthew & Bump x

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 10:02 am

Well done Dan! Such an impressive result! We were trying to figure out how long the 100k is alone... It\'s like running from London to Milton Keynes!!! Congratulations to you - have a safe trip home! xx

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 09:47 am

Congratulations brother - really impressive. Fantastic news and now you can sit back and enjoy it. Finally the ghost of the Camping Dei Fiori boat race can be laid to rest. I'm really pleased for you and look forward to a call when you get home.

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 07:40 am

Well done my boy!! At least one Brit can win something.

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 07:09 am

We are all in awe of you and the amazing feat you are achieving! So many congratulations. We thought of you whilst on our 4th bottle of rose last night with Katy. You nearly had half of hk's Womens institute trotting out to the gobi to sort out the flag situation!! Lots of love the humes xxx

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 06:53 am

Fantastic success Dan well done. Next time try not to take a short cut. Have been biting my nails in he middle of each night this last week, so pleased you have made it, your family is very proud.

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 06:28 am

Dan - great race - you deserve the chamapagne I put on ice Thursday - sorry if that caused a minor blip. Pete reckons you and Will Davies went to the same school for route finding - thought it a bit harsh myself, but have been there too! Enjoy tonight\'s cold ones. Rob

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 05:58 am

Dan, Bloody Awesome, what a result, you proved that red bull doesnt necessarily give you wings!!! Many congratulations and look forward to hearing the stories when you get back. Great job. Al, Katie, Rory & Alexander

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 05:50 am

Who\'s the Daddy?! I KNEW you\'d do it, incredible achievement, massive congratulations! The champagne is on ice for the champion\'s return! Hope you find somewhere that serves a nice cold beer to celebrate tonight! Just watch out as looking at how skinny you\'ve got (caught a glimpse of you in the distance of someone else crossing the finishing post - is the photographer sponsored by redbull too?) Howard is probably only one pint away! Can\'t wait to see you tomorrow, we are so proud of you, all love Katy, Milo and Ottilie Xxxxxx

Just checked the final results here in Saikung (Sal and Tim here for brunch) and we are not surprised, but absolutely thrilled that you won!!! You are a machine Mr Parr!!! Huge congratulations from all of us and loads of love. Can't wait to hear all about it when you're home. Safe travels and we look forward to celebrating with you, Katy, Milo, Ottilie, Will and little Alexandra!!). Love Lau, Rob, Sal and Tim

Bl**dy good effort Dan, keeps the wheels turning.

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 01:02 am

Huge relief to hear you're still in good spirits and ready to get back on the horse. Last sleepless night worrying about you out there in the sand dunes! At least I have Ottilie Bottilie for company! I'm too scared to do anything incase I jinx it, no shoes on tables, no walking under ladders, no discussing the race, no checking the website, there's a big white elephant following us around! So I won't mention the finish line. Lets discuss food: there's a roast chicken with all the trimmings waiting for you (plus a steak if you want that for a starter!!!) and some brownies. Planning a huge party to celebrate you all getting home SAFE and sound, hear Amanda had a shocker with flag-gate too... will have to make sure I fatten you up first as Howard's not invited! Thinking of you constantly, missing you like mad, Milo is beside himself with excitement about Daddy coming home, his running commentary to you never stops, so sweet. You won't believe how Ottilie has changed, she's a real little person, finding everything highly amusing. We're all so proud of you, won't mention the race til it's done and dusted! Tonnes of love Katy xxxx ps you did make it to the SCMP they describe you as `ex-HKFC rugby winger'... the cheek!

Posted On: 03 Jul 2010 12:45 am

Totally in awe of what you're doing. You're so nearly there, what happened with the flags will make winning even sweeter. Go Dan! The McFerrets xx

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 11:10 pm

Midnight UK time which by my estimates means you have just got going. You'll be reading this after getting off the podium with a very, very pisssed off Austrian and a strangely happy Chinese chap congratulating you. There was never a seconds doubt in the UK, HK and everywhere in between that you were going to win this. My bet is about an hour and 10 minutes. Anything more and you should be embarassed. I admit that any which way it pans out I am more than impressed with the whole thing - 100km in 12 hours including detour - are you fukkng kidding me! Enjoy what you have earned and look forward to speaking soon. Lots of love Bruv.

Is it too late to get extreme running into the London 2012 Olympics? We're rooting for you Daniel. Nail it. And by the way isn't "Scheister" German for ....

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 10:43 pm

Dan - by the time you read this you will probably have finished this epic race. All the hong kongers have been outraged by flag-gate but it happened to the strongest man in the field, who is still UNBEATABLE! Go Dan - you are the man. see you in the kong tomorrow - GOOD LUCK! xxxx cluffs.

You're crusin' and we hear the mini-Parrs are screaming for their milk out of that winning cup. Maximum respect and all the best for the final leg. Now; go,go,go... We're there, Bean, Sophie, Freddie and Louis PS give Brandty a kick up the arse for not keeping up.

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 09:05 pm

DP, forget about it. There's nothing you can do about it now. Just nail it tomorrow. Awesome effort, truly awesome. Keep an eye on Nick and Brandty for me. Chris.

Shit happens! Win it please so we can get a good night's sleep on saturday night! A la Chasse mon brave.

01 July 2010 03:40 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

firstly, thanks for alll the messages, its great to hear fom everyone, even the offensive ones from Rowley!!

for all of you who are concerned it has not been hot enough, you can relax.  its hotter that i have ever experienced.  fortunately i was through todays stage before the sun got too high but there have been some casualties today.  the last competitor has just come in after 11 HOURS!!  we came through aboutr 10kms of slot canyons and the temp inthere must have been unreal - north of 50 degress would not be an exaggeration.    good news is we've got 100kms in this tomorrow.  bit of an atomosphere around camp as people are realising what we have got in front of us tomorrow. its going to be hard, hard work

apart from that, todays last stage was phenomenal.  i wish you were all able to see the landscape as its spectacular.  it seems a shame that i'm seeing it on my own!!   the racing was hard today. the 2 chinese lads completelt bonked and were scooped up by my tent mate - they were both lying prone in the canyons.  problem is they run with no food and not enough water - fine if its cool, catastrophic when its hot.  anyway, i think tey might be toast. the Austrian fella called Christian was 2nd - he's sponsored by Red Bull and has got a film crew following him around!!  not sure i was in the script.  i think he will be strong tomorrow, he ougt to be - he's been asleep since we got in about 7 hours ago - not the most social chap.  plus he wears a wierd boiler suit during the day which makes him look like he' stepped off the set of CSI.  other than that, seems like a perfectly normal Austrian

its great to have such a good bunch in out tent - the tuck-shop twins Nick and Dan, Stu Gates who is motioring in 10th and rescued the Chinese chaps, Amanda who's placing well in the girls, Emma whos is doing her university thesis on ultramarathon running( not bad being a stuident these days), Andy's performing solidly and Louisa who is adding a touch of glamour to procedings (as much as that is possible!)  a great bunch

Katy, hope Milo and Ottilie are behaving.  please give them both a big hug from daddy and i will see you all very soon

love to all

Dan

Bit disappointed to see we haven't got a more recent update, desperate to hear just one word that you're ok and feeling well and not too gutted by the pink cow detour - but sure you're fine and just too busy mincing around in your ballet tights in prep for the final push tomorrow. You really can do it, running backwards, I know you can, I'm bursting with pride! Yes the rumours are true, wife and MIL have hit the bottle, good for the milk apparently... so you'd better hurry home as Milo was trotting around in MIL's high heels and wearing a bracelet today, huge paddy when I broke it to him that no he couldn't go out in granny's shoes. He'll be in a smocked dress soon so definitely time Daddy came home! Thinking of you constantly, Ottilie has some new tricks to show you, she can say `coo' genius in the making All Love and BURN it tomorrow - oh by the way glad to see the photographer has finally caught up with you, you look very strong, Austrian looks broken Tonnes of love Katy xxxxx

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 03:48 pm

Loving reading all the blogs and had to read the winner's one, very glad Lu is noted as glam on day 4 ;) good luck with the final day, you can do it!!!!

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 01:51 pm

Further to my last but one; lots of BAD golf shots today which bodes well for the monthly medal tomorrow. Run well on Stage 6 it is there for the taking and I am sure you will put the Austrian back in his rightful place - behind you. God's speed M&D xx.

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 12:48 pm

Come on big man, bring it home! Those red bull sponsored children won\'t ruin it for you.

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 12:31 pm

wow - desperately impressive stuff dan. and to think i used to tell people about my mate rowley who runs a lot... won\'t be doing that again, that\'s for sure. amazing performances so far and hope the last few are equally successful and enjoyable. good luck mate. p.s. rumours of your wife and mother in law getting stuck into the booze at the hkfc .... wouldnt like to see your tab when you get back...

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 12:10 pm

Just heard about this from Ridders - all a bit concerned about the size of the cheesy grin at the end! Have to say what a bloody effort; we haven't been in touch but seriosly well done mate - impressed; must have been all those Russells in freezing mud that got you there!

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 09:06 am

Boss you are amazing! I am so proud of you! I have booked a van for your victory, haha...There will be a driver picking you up at the arrival hall in SZ airport. Good Luck for the final stage!

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 08:51 am

Village kids playing with flags all sounds a bit hooky. I bet they're all sipping redbull today and driving around in minis with big cans strapped to the roof. You had us worried there for a while, but a good save in the end. One final push to bring it home. Amazing effort whatever the result, but we know you've got these guys beaten on the "sprint" finish Good luck! A

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 07:47 am

Dan - the 'directional malfunction' you experienced yesterday reminded me of another great runner, Forest Gump. You two actually share quite a few charateristics. So it seems fitting with one final stage to go to simply end with 'Run Forest Run'! Good luck

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 07:43 am

Dan we are all seriously impressed and rooting you on from a soccer-crazy South Africa! Chris has also been glued to the results page and is proudly telling all his mates about his friend who is a running 'machine'! Loads of Luck and Love for the last few steps xx

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 03:20 am

AMAZING. You are doing so brilliantly. I am also doing brilliantly sat on my arse watching the results page non stop, well with the exception of a Mount Butler hike to the "secret" waterfall yesterday, whilst I was struggling the thought of you out there running 100k got my act together pretty quickly. Super impressed by my new bestie!

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 03:08 am

Mate if you are colour blind how di dyou know they were playing with the PINK flag? Mate gutted to hear that you were robbed the Stage 5 victory but we all knwo you will glide home to victory tomorrow. Think the Austrian fella knows you have him beat. See you next week champ.

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 02:40 am

WOW Dan! You are amazing! You've been in the lead all along !!! Keep well & awaiting to see your champion's cup when you are back!!! Keep it going! P.S. Office things are sorted & in progress, so one less worry for u!

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 08:38 pm

I've got lots of things to say the majority of which are expletives! Good job your usual forward planning self put enough in the bag to sh*t on them anyway. Rest up and show them that you can win with an extra few K's under the belt. If in doubt a ribbon round the wrist should help with the left and right. I'm really excited for you bruv and look forward to being bored by the story when you get back to HK. Only a short stage left - show then what should have happened. Love Bruv.

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 06:05 pm

I do not believe you got lost at all, it just doesn't fit with the Parr sense of direction. Reckon you were just hiding behind a bush to tease the other 2 dudes cos you know they will never beat you now. And as for "chicken legs"? more like road runners to me, and fine they are too. WELL DONE YOU. Fan-blooming -tastic!

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 05:41 pm

PS. You must join Milo for Mandarin lessons! Chen had the same problem as you but was able to ask the way - the Austrian followed him!

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 05:03 pm

Hey Dan, I am so so impressed by your efforts, actually in total disbelief. I hang on to every word that I receive from "Breaking News" and was gutted for you re the pink flag saga...What an amazing experience. Cannot wait to hear from all of you on Saturday. You are all unbelievably impressive! All the best Soph & Oscar xx

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 03:46 pm

Thank god you're safe - you gave us a bit of a fright.... Don't let it get to you - after a good night's sleep 22km will seem like breeze.

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 03:43 pm

Stage 5, what an absolute pisser - I suspect some of the organisers have been on the whip end of your tongue. That said like a poor golf shot you can't have it back so it is onwards and upwards. 40 mins is still a good lead so go ahead and win it.

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 03:21 pm

Those hours watching that overgrown boy scout Ray Mears finally came into their own then as you experienced really being lost in the Dessert! Glad I can't see any of the organisers, I'd wap them over the head with my handbag. Although I'm sure you just did it on purpose to see the view and give the others a fighting chance.... GO Dannyboy GO!!!! You're our CHAMP! the end is in sight. To give you that extra boost, you'd better make this one count as I can safely say that after the stress of today your mum and I will never be letting you do one of these races again! Well not unless I'm in a helicopter above you with Ray Mears himself! Please don't let today get you down, focus focus focus, I know you can do it. Missing you like mad and so relieved you're not trying to light a fire with your sweaty socks out there lost (Ray could do it). All our love K, M and O xx ps they are both very well Milo keeps rehearsing what he's going to tell you when you get back about sea lions and a man he saw doing a backdive into the pool - at ocean park, it has replaced India's house in his affections. In fact he attempted a backdive off the sofa and narrowly missed his sister. He keeps up a running commentary to you all the time. Loads of love Xxxxx

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 03:19 pm

Once again Danny Boy a monster effort. To get lost and get yourselve back on track and still come in 3rd only 10 mins behind the leader is just immense. Sounds like the Austrian is broken.....nothing like getting a bit of Scottish needle into proceedings. Best of luck for the final leg, keep it strong and whatever you do get the bed !!!!

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 02:46 pm

Well run sir!

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 02:43 pm

left and right never were your strong points Danny Boy!! blindside/openside maybe would have been easier. Strange too that pink is your favourite colour. Whatever you feel you should be incredibly proud of yourself Parry, shows how good you really are! Im glued to this web-site, make us all proud and destroy the Austrian on Saturday. Bring it home!

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 02:06 pm

STEWARD'S ENQUIRY STAGE 5! Surely??

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 01:34 pm

Danny Boy, you are a legend. Well done buddy. Keep up the good work. You're the talk of the town over here and even your closest friends are saying nice things about you! Good luck for the next stage and keep on beating the self proclaimed "one of the world's top extreme athletes" into a cocked hat. Well done buddy. Corbs

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 01:31 pm

Hi mate, A friend of mine told me that a British guy is absolutely killing the Gobi this year, so I got on the website to find that it's you!!!! Well done mate, sounds like you are doing brilliantly, and getting as much out of the experience as possible. I met Nick and Dan during the Jurassic Coast Challenge earlier this year so please send them my best as well. Just keep it going! All the best Jonah

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 01:21 pm

Dear Godfather Dan My Daddy tells me you are running through the desert which is a very long way and very hot and sandy. He also says you are running really fast and are in the lead. Wow, you must be a really fast runner and I am very proud of my godfather. Good luck for the rest of the race from me, my Mummy and Daddy and I hope you are feeling ok and not too tired. Lots of love, Harry x ps, Daddy says he used to be a fast runner too, but in slightly shorter races I think.

Posted On: 01 Jul 2010 01:12 pm

You are a legend - unbelievable. Getting all the info on your winning moves from Vatche who is glued to the results page. Seriously impressed and well done you. Sitting here waiting for the results of stage 5 and wishing you well. See you back in HK soon. lots of love Phils :)

You are amazing! We are all so so impressed. Following your progress constantly -masses of luck for the final stage. x

29 June 2010 08:36 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

someone has found the thermostat and the temp has gone through the roof! managed to get through stage 3 before it got really hot - in fact, we actually had some rain.  i`ve asked the organisers for my money back

we`re staying the night in some local Uiguer (sp!) houses. what normally would pass for basic is consiered superior to the Four Seasons when you`ve been sleeping in a tent and sh1tting in a hole for four days!  great to have a roof over the head and windows to look out of.  the rooms have carrpets on the walll which is a bit wierd and it fels like a turkish boudoir but its the height of luxury.  its great to be around the locals and we get some pretty odd looks.  i walked paat a couple of kids in my white long-sleeve tee shirt and white full length leggings (the ballerina ones) and they both broke out in lauughter.  i don,t think it was complimentary!  having the little kids running around makes me miss Milo and his chaos but i`m getting more kip here than at home  (could be due to the drugs as well!)

have met some great people out here - a lots of super-keanos but on the whole a pretty decent bunch. there are a couple of real old boys taking part so i reckon if we get dad some new knees he`d be good to go!

have been racing hard against a local Chinese fellla called Wey. he goes like the wind on the flat but i think i have got the edge up the hills.  unfortunately the rest of the course is flat!!

just been told that our wake up call is 2:45 tomorrow so the course director is clearly reading my emails about sleep!  had better get to bed

keep the messages comingand thanks for all the bst wishes

missing you Katy and give M and O a big hug

laters

Aussie Dan. Damien has me following your progress. Bloody awesome job - you're trouncing some of the world's best! Such an inspiring job, Damo's just suggested we do this next year. Rest well after today's monster stage.

Promised myself I wouldn\'t check the website so I haven\'t so as not to jinx it but just here to say I\'m thinking of you out there in the oven, I know you can do it! GOGOGOGOGO! Milo asking about the train again this morning so stitched you again, heee hee! Have ordered everything possible from the FC for the prodicle return so think of this as you\'re running today: what do you fancy for your first supper home: roast chicken, spare ribs, steak, lamb chops, beef - please let me know! Will have some brownies ready... Love to those chicken legs Xx

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 10:06 pm

I'm sure I can't be related to you...just thinking about you doing all that running makes me feel exhausted! Very impressed with your efforts and hope you continue to do well, keep safe and sound. Lots of love Amy xx xx

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 03:20 pm

You\'ve gone and done it again `I am inviiiinciiiible\'! I\'m getting too scared to check the website now as each day I\'ve found out you\'ve won via a different source (tell Amanda Bonnie\'s been brilliant at keeping me posted!) my irish side coming out but think that\'s a good tactic so I\'ll be hanging on tender hooks all day tomorrow waiting for someone to deliver the good news!!!! I KNOW you can do it, I slightly fear you\'ll make sure you\'re the fastest even if you lost a foot in the process! So proud of you! The scenery looks absolutely fantastic, but you\'re obviously speeding so fast past the camera man that he keeps missing you, tell them from me please can they get a shot of you crossing over the finishing line! You\'re on a roll, you can do it, gogogogogogo! Rob and Lau have had a beautiful little girl, Alexandra, had a cuddle with her today, she\'s gorgeous and a whopping 4.1kg! We\'re missing you like mad, Milo is tired of running around with his backpack like Daddy and just wants you back now, I\'ve promised you\'ll take him back to ocean park to ride on the pink train (sorry, dropped you in that one) Ottilie is on great form and just full of gummy smiles, irish side not wanting to jinx but v. veronica on the wane... All love Katy xx

Danny boy, you're an absolute hero...Well done you! Seriously seriously impressed. I echo your mum in the sentiment about struggling to run for a bus - and I can barely last 30 seconds static in the hurlingham sauna - so you have my full and utter RESPECT. Keep up the good work and keep that Wey boy firmly back in second place. Cant wait to see you (avec medal?!) and all your brood in August. Gx

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 02:19 pm

Awesome work dude ! Keep it up ! One long day and its homeward bound !

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 12:51 pm

Dan - way to go man. You are tearing this race apart. Must have been all that time at the HKFC pool. Way to go - keep pushing hard and testing your limits. This is a experience of a lifetime. Give it heap. Cheers Roddy Mac :)

Dan KT has got your support going global. Am so impressed! Dan the machine Parr? Dan dessert trekker Parr? Dan the deadly Parr? Can't wait to meet little O in August, Soph x

Andy Murray? Who's he?! X

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 07:47 am

Mitchels fans were up early this morning to check the results! Dad nearly got up in the middle of the night to look but decided he wouldn't go back to sleep whichever way it went! We are SOOO proud DP! Take very great care . XXX

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 07:40 am

OMG! You're doing AMAZINGLY well Dan! 4 out of 4. Just keep going!.. Have told a few of the lads in my office... even our Marathon man didn't have much to say for himself after that! Looking forward to seeing the next result. Massive well done to you! xx

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 07:35 am

Awesome effort Danny Boy....I can't imagine how much your eating given your voracious appetite ! Your comments re the bog facilities must remind you of No. 8 Dundas St ...Don't let Wey get in your head you must conc on your stage and you will dominate him and all comers ! best of luck.....

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 07:06 am

Nearly got it done mate!! Only one rather large day to go. Given how soft you've had it til now, you should eat it up. Just make sure those blokes with the super-impressive-on-paper bios don't catch you!! My advice (if it's worth anything) : put em in your dust in the first 20 -30 k while it's cool. Go easy & be careful with your hydration / electro while it's hot. Rip into top gear for the last 15 to 20k... it's basically the home straight. Good luck mate. I know you can put the foot on the throat. DO IT!! Love , Mungo

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 07:04 am

GOGOGOGOGO! as your loverly wife puts it. Fantastic effort. The equiv of the trailwalker next, which you nailed just a few months ago. Wish this thing was televised... And get in front of the camera a bit more, only seen a couple of the leader so far.

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 06:49 am

4 out of 4 - you are really in this thing! Amazing results and make sure you keep it. It's the biggy next up but remember they need to go fu**ing hard to catch you which they really won't want to. Think of the satsfaction of the RedBull TV crew filming their man on the 2nd step of the podium whilst you stand on top. Keep it going and keep us posted. Love Bruv.

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 06:41 am

Well done Howard!! dont want to see this chinese fella get the better of you over the next two stages, try tripping him up if he passes you! been trying to ring Rowley and wind him up but annoyingly he's in Phuket!! you've made him look like a minnow...brilliant, you're a superstar Danny Parr

Posted On: 30 Jun 2010 02:38 am

Mate, amazing effort to be in the halfway lead. The team here and in Singapore are very impressed -- especially, when I told them I did all four of the RTP races last year!

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 10:43 pm

Blimey DP, when did you get so skinny ? You look like you could do with a decent steak supper. Anyway, fantastic effort. Just don't blow your lead now ! And stop nicking my brothers grub! CC.

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 08:48 pm

Christ - scripture from the old man; it must be serious! Bring on stage 4 - easy meat.

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 06:21 pm

I've already got a new set of knees and don't really want to do it again, so it's all down to you my boy! Keep going - remember the words of the psalm 'I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence commeth my help' Time for evensong - nay a glass of vino. Stay fit, stay well, run hard ...... enough to win.

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 06:15 pm

tricky being a Mum and not allowed to gush - but from someone who can\'t run for a bus how the hell did i manage to produce you?! XX

28 June 2010 10:39 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

you'll all be pleased to know its getting hotter!  Stage 2 was pretty good, manged to get a lead on the hilly early stage and then hung on.  crossed our 1st river and then into another stunning campsite surrounded by mountains.  the sun is beating down and temps in the tent are brutal.  the good news is that is going to get hotter too!  tent no 1 is going pretty well with amanda in 2nd for the chicks and stu roaring in 15th today.  even nick an brandty are performing v well - unfortunately I think they have run out of extra food which is not good news for me!!

sorry this is so short, the computers her are tiny and typing is like using a key board with mittens on!

have got to let it for a pee and try and avoid being caught, the loos are not for the faint hearted!!

keep the messages coming

love to all

I'm bursting with pride to the extent the unbelievable has happened, yes, I have joined the ranks as a running bore!!!!!! My running chat could almost rival yours, I stopped everyone I saw today to tell them and our phone bill will be quite sizeable as I've spread the word around to follow those chicken legs suck up the sand! GOGOGOGOGO!!!!! More exclamations please!!!!! You are the buzz of the town, I keep expecting to find a piccy of you in the SCMP! Anyway missing you like crazy and please please don't push yourself to breaking point! slowly slowly catchy monkey! All love Katy xxxxx PS hope those brownies have come into their own!

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 12:58 pm

You are flying mate! Making it look too easy. Sam H. is right, I wish I was up there to give you a run for your money. But at the pace you are going not sure I could hang! (just pumping you up a bit, I could hang, ha!) Keep it going buddy.

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 12:49 pm

Mate, I now know why you have been looking so lean around the pool. You'll be pleased to know that we found out about your exploits from your lovely wife who was enjoying the rays around the pool at HKFC today. Awesome progress - keep it up!

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 12:33 pm

Amazing to think we\\\'re all following you from around the world. Just unbelievable buddy. Rowls will not shut up. Everyone I speak to is talking about it and all so proud of you. xx

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 11:07 am

Dan, congrats on your results so far. Watching your progress makes me want to make a come-back to running. Keep it up, you were a bit slow today!

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 09:40 am

I have a new HERO. Its not you its actually the idiot who tried to stick with you during stage 3. Been there and that is a foolish mistake. GO THE PARR MACHINE.

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 09:34 am

Maestro!!! Incredible, speed it up!

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 09:06 am

....another stage in the bag, amazing effort Dan! We're following your progress and cheering you on all the way!

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 08:58 am

Now I don't feel like such a numpty for seeming so shocked when you did so well in Trailwalker last year - no-one else knew you were such a speed demon either! Eric wants to kick your butt - he's bouncing off the walls in the office wanting to be up there running with you. We've got an awesome photo of you wearing a little pixie-gaitor on your head on the website. Front page mate. Keep well, keep fed, keep the spandex on at night - and don't get any penalties...

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 08:50 am

Wow, when Ben said you'd nail it I should have believed those chicken legs had staying power. Inspiration for a new form of dieting me thinks. Am seriously impressed and rather lacking of something fitting to say beyond the fact that I am another person who is bragging about you to all their friends. Did you know we are besties?! x

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 08:48 am

unbelievable DP! Knew you were good, but did realise you were THAT good! My heart is bursting with pride! XX

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 08:44 am

Bloody hell mate! Where did this come from? Are you being chased by Howard? Keep it up - we're all cheering you on back in Blighty!

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 07:43 am

A great, great effort fella - I sense the work starts here though! On the old Lightning we used to shut an engine down to save fuel; I don't think you can do that so be economical as best you can there is yet a long way to go. PS. Dragged to see Othello last night - it lasted longer than your Stage 3!! Dad

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 07:36 am

Morning brother. Fantastic news again - it is seriously impressive stuff. Just think of all the grief you used to get for those weasely little legs! Ticking off the stages one by one - half of them are done now so keep pushing. We are all behind you. Carina sends her love as do we all. Keep in touch. Love Bruv.

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 06:50 am

awesome mate - stage 3 in the bag as well - going great guns in the cool weather ;-) Pete 'the feet' and I were in the FCC having a quiet lunch, but you'd finished before us! Have a great rest of the week mate Rob

Posted On: 29 Jun 2010 06:02 am

incredible effort mate.......watching for the updates and cheering you on all the way - you are a machine. Keep your focus and work rate up as I did at lunch time when i went for a twenty minute run on the treadmill........you'll be glad to hear i got the job done too :-)

27 June 2010 07:21 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

so the race isunder way at last.  journey to the first camp site was an adventure in itself.  Combination of dirt roads, knackered Chinese buses and drivers who have never left Urumqi meant that we had several unplanned stops when the busses got stuck or they were afraid that the bridges were not strong enough. Each stop involved a big get together of the drivers, lots of pointing, jabbering and a quick fag.  Despite the repeated committee meetings we eventually got to camp.  our tent would win the prize for most food eaten on the night before the race - enough calories to get Lance around  the  Tour were guzzled in preparation.

Stage one was great - relatively short and having trained in the heat and humidity of HK the conditionns were fantastic - dry and cool - so an opportunity to put the foot down.  am a bit concerned that i might have gone too fast for stage one but i felt good and its going to get hotter so i thought i may as well try and gain some time while the conditions are good.  the scenery is magnificant.  i almost got lost twice as i was too busy gazing at the views. The route is marked by little pink flags which is fine unless you arre colour blind like yours truly!!   anyway, managed to  get into camp ahead of the field so am pretty pleased.  also a bit nervous as there are some experienced runners behind me and i think they know how to run these things whereas i done have a clue!!  maked me think i may have gone off too quick but bugger it -  youve got to be in it to win it

have got a great bunch in the tent - Amanda came in 2nd women beating a kiwi bircs who has completed Badwater twice and rune the length of new zealand!!  nick and dan have just come into camp and sounds pretty fresh.  had better go and say hi.

thinking of everyone at home, especiallly the two rug rats - bigs hugs to all and will be iin touch tomorrow

GOGOGOGOGO! All love Katy Xxxxxx

Go Forest, go...didnt think you would win stage 1 after I saw you a few weeks ago!

Posted On: 28 Jun 2010 01:59 pm

Not a bad effort Spaniel. Hat\'s off so far. Rowley always made out these things were sooo difficult. I commend you for making him look like the soft c8ck he really is...keep going mate

Posted On: 28 Jun 2010 01:35 pm

Mate, incredible effort. Very impressed. Just imagine if any of your footy team showed anywhere near as much ticker!

Posted On: 28 Jun 2010 12:34 pm

WOW!!!!! Well done Dan dan, we are all so impressed and proud. Have been able to see a couple of photos and you're looking strong and like you're enjoying it, keep it up! GOGOGOGOGO dessert rat! Took Milo to ocean park today in a desperate search to quell the cabin fever that has set in with the rain - he saw a crocodacle and is over the moon, he kissed it through the glass. Daddy has still gone `shopping' but tonight he said you'd gone running so think it's beginning to sink in! Ottilie is on great form, has smiled her way through a few body slams and a direct hit to the head with a ball (a soft one don't worry!). Tonnes of love from us and hugs and kisses, thinking of you all the time, good luck for tomorrow GOGOGO! xxxx

Posted On: 28 Jun 2010 11:27 am

Posted On: 28 Jun 2010 07:16 am

Mate, there's only one way from here, and it's not up!! I am amazed Howard, what a superstar you are, keep it up champ, will be looking every day! Stevie

Posted On: 28 Jun 2010 06:05 am

you're ripping it Parr - great job - always knew you were fit but that is some pace - seriously impressive - why are you dressed like a German soccer player in this photo?

Posted On: 28 Jun 2010 05:48 am

Unbelievable. Top stuff buddy. We are in awe. Keep at it and listen to your legs... You'll be glad to have missed the England game! Bl**dy awful.

Posted On: 27 Jun 2010 04:19 pm

Parry awesome effort mate. I was so happy to see you come in at number 1 today. Looking forward to spendng my next few days following your progress while at work. Go hard buddy.

Posted On: 27 Jun 2010 04:03 pm

A great effort son, well done. I think your analysis is spot on - don't go too fast too soon - see how the experienced runners go about it. That said, you've won stage 1 and no one can take that away from you; take care, we look forward to tomorrow's result.

21 June 2010 12:13 pm (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

For anyone who is risking their neck on the 0855 China Southern flight from Shenzhen to Urumqi on Friday morning I have got a cross-border taxi booked from Central to the airport.  There are five spare seats for anyone that wants to join?  Total cost is HK$1k and will be split amongst those on board.  Taxi departs at 0545 from Mid-levels.  Email me on [email protected] if you want to join us

Katy said what an amazing feat; we say what two amazing feet; Spencer Davis said it all!! Well done so far and good luck for the remainder.

Posted On: 27 Jun 2010 02:31 pm

Dannyboy, we are SO proud! Well done! What an amazing feat. Milo has been running around with his backpack on "like Daddy".... "going shopping"! so I keep reminding him that you are 'chasing and chasing running in the desert' so he's been doing a lot of `running like Daddy' but you do keep slipping off shopping too! So pleased the first day went so amazingly well, hope you sleep well tonight and all fingers crossed you have a good day again tomorrow. Sorry not to write sooner, I've just cleared out Ottilie's pukey clothes from the bath to make way for Milo's and it's 10.30pm you get the picture... bet that makes your freezing tent of smelly feet sound like luxury! Thinking of you, masses of luck for tomorrow, don't push yourself too hard we want you to come back in one piece! All love Katy xx

Posted On: 27 Jun 2010 01:31 pm

Jesus Christ brother - either their results page is broken or I am seriously impressed! Awesome result and keep it up. All that talk about 50 degrees - i think it's hotter in the UK. Look after yourself and if your hungry I hear Carmichael is carrying a little extra... Keep us posted - love Bruv.

great blogging. I would recommend you to read the blogs of some of your fellow runners, so you know what your readers expect..
