After checkpoint 2 we set out on the endless road of despair. A straight shot to nowhere as far as you could see. Checkpoint 3 showed up soon, we stopped for a quick nutritious slim jim and continued on to 4. Between CP3 and CP4 there was another avenue of ultimate sadness. Broken down scene. We were making good time with minimal breaks. Scenery was pretty bleak but luckily it was overcast and drizzling, so we destroyed some miles.
From CP4 to CP7 we traveled through salt flats and dirt roads, with nobody in sight. We were in the Turpan Basin, second lowest place in the world. As interesting as it sounds they didn't even have a sign or store selling souvenirs. We hit CP7 at 2:30 am for our first hot meal. We had covered 42 miles and the wheels were falling off. We laid down on a tarp and enjoyed the worst shooting pain in your legs imaginable. We choked down some more awful freeze dried food and Steve tweaked out while I slept for 30 minutes. I woke up at 3:30 and we got ready to shred the last 20 miles. And by shred we mean shuffle/hobble/limp. It was the worst display of coordination you will ever see. After hitting CP8 we had only 12K to go, 6K of sand dunes at the very end. Spirits were at an all time low when we set foot on the dunes at 7:50 am. We complained our way through over 3 miles of loose, tall dunes. Luckily it was early in the morning and the sand was still cool. Steve walked barefoot and I used my socks. I started the day with a brand new pair of $16 socks and they have a hole worn through them now. After 8 false alarms we finally crested the dune to the finish line. We ended up finishing the 62 miles in 25 hours. We placed 69 and 70, passing over half the field. Winners. You would think that joy would ensue, but the camp today is called The Oven. Appropriately. Today it was 124 degrees. Hot. We tried to sleep but sweated like a sauna. At 9 am we had 9 hours of heat to look forward to enduring. There was no refuge so we just sweated and complained with everyone else. There's plenty of water to drink but it's all hot. The hot water for making meals is just sitting in a pot on a stool in the sun, hot enough to cook with.
Last stage is allegedly 22k of sand dunes in the morning. This should be extremely hard. Blisters, sore muscles, and diminished vision should add up for a party tomorrow morning. After that we hop on the bus for 4 hours with the other stinking people and go back to #1 Yin Du Hotel. We are pretty tired as we didn't get much sleep today in the heat. We are filthy and crusted with mud and salt. Thanks for all the comments, they are a good read. We'll be calling or seeing you shortly. We have an extensive menu of real food items that need to be eaten.

Woke up feeling good agin, to cold rain. Done with peanuts, we're throwing them all out.
Started out the day in a river bed full of golf ball size rocks. We spent 3 hours covering 11k in the rocks, with about 6 river crossings. The scenery was awesome but you had to watch where your feet went or you would die/break your ankle. After the first checkpoint we walked on a gravel road for another 10k in the rain. Stopped at checkpoint 2 to eat lunch as usual. Next we went from mountains to rocky sand-ish dunes. Shoes were full of rocks. As we came into the valley, the sun came out and apparently we are now in the desert. It's hot. We finished the stage in 7 hours 10 minutes. Camp is a village called Peach Village. There are peach trees down by the toilets; refreshing. Instead of a tent we are staying in some local houses. A big room for the 8 of us. Tomorrow we get to eat breakfast at 2:30 am and get on a bus at 3:45. Stage 4 should start at 6 am. Stage 4 is the Flaming Mountain and should be hot. We are looking forward to some terrible pain. We have covered about 60 miles so far. The feet are in ok shape with just a few heel blisters. There are some serious blisters floating around camp so we can't really complain. Everyone in the tent is feeling good so far. We'll try and get some sleep early but the sun tends to go down at 10 pm; plus it's nice and steamy in the room. Tylenol PM to the rescue once again. Thanks for the emails and comments.
Steve: Mom, Dad, Sara...Feeling good, no worries
Brandon: Hi everybody. Going well and getting ready to do 60 miles day after tomorrow. I have tissues to dry the tears.

We're in a tent with 8 people total, 4 of which are destroying the race for a living. They placed 10, 15, 33, 40 something. The other half of us are pro walkers so we get in hours after them. 5 hours 20 minutes today. In case you forgot Stage 5 is 62 miles.
Tomorrow is another 20 odd miles, weather should be getting hotter and the course is harder. Overall we are feeling good and should be ready for 7 hours tomorrow. Met more lawyers, dentists, and investment bankers. Shower would be great but it's still 5 sweaty days away. Short entry today the creative juices are not flowing and humor is running low. Thanks for the emails/comments, they are so uplifting. Especially the ones from work. We got in front of some cameras today by accident. Those pictures will probably be cut.

First half was a better time than sitting in Durham, maybe. The views were good and you can't really take good enough photos to show them. The course is marked with pink sprinkler flags about every 25 meters. There is a crew of sweepers that walks in the absolute back picking up the flags. If you see them, you are the last person on the course. We spent plenty of quality time with them for about 30-45 minutes. We decided to go out easy and experienced great success.
Only thing is you can only walk in the back for so long without losing faith in self. After a 30 minute lunch and seeing the sweeper team zero in on our 20, we decided to launch Crush Fest 8000. This would later prove to be a bad decision. We hammered away and passed plenty of people through the 2 checkpoints. Things were going well until the hills came up. By hill I mean cliff. Hands and feet cliffs. Fall=die cliffs. We went up and down and scored some good pictures there. Speaking of which, we had thought it would be day 3 when we stopped speaking. Day 1 = I hate you, and your face. We passed Obi Wan's house so we had to be on high alert for sand people. Luckily they left us alone. The rest of the day we walked up and down, mostly up. We ended up finishing the stage in 6 hours 50 minutes. Hopefully the wheels don't fall off tomorrow. We're at camp in the middle of the flats, should be terribly cold tonight. Tylenol PM to the rescue. Overall the views were dialed, you can't show them without being here. Romantic.
Off to choke down some freeze dried food again. We have some hammers in our tent, those guys are killing the course. Places 10, 24, 25, 60-something. We ended up 98 and 99 I think. Thanks for checking up, all 6 of you. Richard the Ruiner sends his regards. Read other blogs for a much better description of today. 20 more miles in the morning, difficult then easy unlike today. By the way stage 5 is now 60 miles instead of 56. Stage 6 is 11 miles of pure sand dunes. Off to eat and gas up the tent.

Plenty of off-road bus river crossings and we are at camp. Weather is a little colder than expected, we also have a ton of food and were advised to get rid of some food. We promptly declined. That is about it for now, we are about to go stuff our faces full of slim jims, peanut butter, and beef jerky. An entire year in the making with 4 weeks (maybe) of training should be on the road tomorrow. Hi Mom. Hi Elaine.
We are eating food out of a bag in matching clothes, just terrible. Everyone here is a lawyer.
Hope you are doing better than we are.
Love,
Steve & Brandon

Nov 21 2009: After not running for an entire year, ran 19.4 miles w/hangover (just call it 20) in 3 hours. Immediately followed by no further training until late December due to some type of overuse injury. Surprise!
