Gobi March (2010) blog posts from Brandon Lee

04 July 2010 02:59 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Stage 5 started at 8 am Thursday morning. It was the big dance with 62 miles to put on the feet. We left camp directly into 20 river crossings, no joke. With 62 miles ahead of us, we planned to remove our shoes for every crossing, but we didn't know there were 20. We took them off for 18 before giving up and walking through the river. Twice. We also spent some quality time with the sweeper in dead last as usual. Luckily the shoes dried quickly as we walked through a never ending Uigher village. Kids were pumped up and high fives ensued. Forever. We high fived our way through the village for at least 2 hours.

After checkpoint 2 we set out on the endless road of despair. A straight shot to nowhere as far as you could see. Checkpoint 3 showed up soon, we stopped for a quick nutritious slim jim and continued on to 4. Between CP3 and CP4 there was another avenue of ultimate sadness. Broken down scene. We were making good time with minimal breaks. Scenery was pretty bleak but luckily it was overcast and drizzling, so we destroyed some miles.

From CP4 to CP7 we traveled through salt flats and dirt roads, with nobody in sight. We were in the Turpan Basin, second lowest place in the world. As interesting as it sounds they didn't even have a sign or store selling souvenirs. We hit CP7 at 2:30 am for our first hot meal. We had covered 42 miles and the wheels were falling off. We laid down on a tarp and enjoyed the worst shooting pain in your legs imaginable. We choked down some more awful freeze dried food and Steve tweaked out while I slept for 30 minutes. I woke up at 3:30 and we got ready to shred the last 20 miles. And by shred we mean shuffle/hobble/limp. It was the worst display of coordination you will ever see. After hitting CP8 we had only 12K to go, 6K of sand dunes at the very end. Spirits were at an all time low when we set foot on the dunes at 7:50 am. We complained our way through over 3 miles of loose, tall dunes. Luckily it was early in the morning and the sand was still cool. Steve walked barefoot and I used my socks. I started the day with a brand new pair of $16 socks and they have a hole worn through them now. After 8 false alarms we finally crested the dune to the finish line. We ended up finishing the 62 miles in 25 hours. We placed 69 and 70, passing over half the field. Winners. You would think that joy would ensue, but the camp today is called The Oven. Appropriately. Today it was 124 degrees. Hot. We tried to sleep but sweated like a sauna. At 9 am we had 9 hours of heat to look forward to enduring. There was no refuge so we just sweated and complained with everyone else. There's plenty of water to drink but it's all hot. The hot water for making meals is just sitting in a pot on a stool in the sun, hot enough to cook with.

Last stage is allegedly 22k of sand dunes in the morning. This should be extremely hard. Blisters, sore muscles, and diminished vision should add up for a party tomorrow morning. After that we hop on the bus for 4 hours with the other stinking people and go back to #1 Yin Du Hotel. We are pretty tired as we didn't get much sleep today in the heat. We are filthy and crusted with mud and salt. Thanks for all the comments, they are a good read. We'll be calling or seeing you shortly. We have an extensive menu of real food items that need to be eaten.

Hope the chinamans had some decent food for the banquet. You and Steve did an awesome job we here at home are so proud od you two. Gpa and your dad are printint all the pics that they can of you guys. Gpa and me we are glued to the computer check on your progress and lookink for more pics. Well get cleaned and go enjoy some real food and have a safe trip back home. Get a good night sleeping in a bed. Love you, gma

30 June 2010 02:10 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Slept well in the local house. We had pillows and everything, plus we kind of took a bath in a cold chinese river. We slept well until the 3 am wake up call. We got on a bus and rode about an hour and a half to the start of the next stage. Apparenty they couldn't find anything painful enough within walking distance from glorious peach village.

We got off the bus and the race began immediately. We didn't have much time to take care of out feet on the bus, so we walked 50' and stopped on the side to tape up our feet. Our friends the sweepers had to wait for us yet again, we started in absolute dead last with nobody in sight. Fueled by our hate for each other, we started walking and overtaking people. We spent about 13k on a dirt road before reaching checkpoint 1.

Shortly afterwards, we started climbing the most terrifying sand/rock/ash dune ever. It was so fine it would seep into your socks and turn into clay between your toes, destroying your soul. We ate lunch at checkpoint 2 as normal. It was starting to get hot by now. We gathered our water and set out for the end. We came up on an awesome slot canyon so we stopped to take a few pictures. Mistake. For almost the entire 12k (2 hours) of the last section we were in the same wretched slot canyon, you couldn't even see out the sides to see any progress. We passed a few people in trouble in the shade. Steve gave them some water, Brandon was stupid enough to give his water away at the checkpoint. Spirits were getting low and everyone we met along the path was filled with despair. It was not encouraging. Finally we reached the peak of the flaming mountain and saw the camp below. Luckily the made us go all the way down the dune and then back up right before the camp, party.

Tonight we are staying in some kind of ghost town/museum. It's hot and there are still people out on the course (5:15pm). We started at 6 am. The wind feels like a hair dryer, it's really comfortable and refreshing. Picture taking is on the decline since survival is taking the front seat. We spent a few hours talking with other people about tomorrow. It's 62 miles through 'The Oven' the Turpan Basin. Allegedly the hottest place in China. Steve performed a major blister removal operation on both feet this afternoon, hopefully they work out tomorrow. I'll be on my way to the medical tent soon to find out about mine as well. The feet around here look awful. Aside from that everything else is going well body-wise for both of us. We've accepted the fact that tomorrow will be the worst day ever. Hands and faces are ready for slaps.

Despite all that, the desert is actually stunning but you can't take a good enough picture to tell. We're looking right at probably a 120 story sand dune about 100 yards away. Also craving some actual food. Freeze dried meals are ok for a few days, it's starting to be difficult to choke them down. I traded Steve his chicken for a severely undercooked beef stroganoff this morning at 4am in the bus, I win.

We won't be able to write tomorrow, we anticipate around a 30 hour time for the stage. Our tent mate thinks we'll be back by 24 hours, but he also carried 35 lbs of stuff including cans of chili. We've covered roughly 82 miles so far. 62 tomorrow, 11 on the last day. We're only about 60% through. Ouch. We'll check in later after great success. Thanks again for the emails and comments, we stop crying for 4-6 minutes while we read them.

Brandon: Coming in at No 88! Steve @ No 89. The Number "88" is so significant to the Chinese, it means a lot - wealth, luck, etc. "Check it out with the China folks there" and see what they say about "88".. From all of us in Hawaii.

As taught by the boy scouts & U2 Brandon as an Eagle: " Two scouts kept falling as they walked the RR Tracks alone-they then got together- hand-in-hand, shoulder-to-shoulder- together they finished in what seemed earlier to be a hard & tedious task" You and Steve are doing the same- the scouts finished-and so will you! Keep it up!!

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 07:20 pm

You guys make us proud with your fortitude in the face of adversity, and with your charity towards those in need (just read Michael Dee's blog). Every day, all day, at least one computer at the station has been tuned into the website as we anxiously await stage updates and Brandon's humorous blogs. 62 miles in just over 24hrs, you guys are amazing.

I just read Michael Dee's blog about the firemen from North Carolina that helped him when he was down and nearly out. I really want to give you a man hug now

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 05:44 pm

100k in 24:58? What happened to the plan to be last? 65 competitors finshed after you including a couple of the terminators and the other guy. Way to represent the Bull City! I'm really in awe of you after reading yours and the other blogs. How would you feel about a man-hug when you get back.

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 05:08 pm

What a relief to read that all the competitors had finally finished and then to read that you came in at 4:13 pm. Hope Steve faired well too! Everyone here at Grandpa Chun's house is hooked up to the site to read what you two have to say. This is the most they probably used their laptops (ha!). And Grandma Lee is a pro by now too thanks to you two! It's all downhill from here. We are so looking forward to that final stage when you guys finish and will certainly celebrate alongside with you two! Awesome, awesome job!

Posted On: 02 Jul 2010 01:33 pm

A few words of wisdom from Charlie Chan (seemed appropriate) "Long road often shortest way to end of journey" and "Distance no hindrance to fond thoughts". Keep your spirits up, you're almost there.

I ran into Devereaux the other day... He was riding his bike, the same one from college except the bars are now rocked way forward and the seat is high. He asked about you so I told him what you were up to. He said that was cool, then asked when the next race was going on. He asked if anyone was running the entire course barefoot to which I replied 'most likely not.' He then spit all over the place and said he was going to do it next year with fubu as his main sponsor because he's 'crazy enough.' He was also sweating

Use your treking pole for the added thrust and balance, \"it\'s your third leg!\". Your efforts will give you two -your \"third eye\" that will see you through. Your teamwork -you and Steve- and willingness to help others - esp w/the water - keep it up - to the finish line! GPA

think of your favorite masked superhero, and become him or her. Attack the 60 miles and become them. Thumbs up on the sharing of H2O, and it sounds beautiful and horrible at the same time. Walk careful and safe and try to talk to each other at least once every two hours. Peace from Station 2.

29 June 2010 09:22 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Woke up feeling good agin, to cold rain. Done with peanuts, we're throwing them all out.

Started out the day in a river bed full of golf ball size rocks. We spent 3 hours covering 11k in the rocks, with about 6 river crossings. The scenery was awesome but you had to watch where your feet went or you would die/break your ankle. After the first checkpoint we walked on a gravel road for another 10k in the rain. Stopped at checkpoint 2 to eat lunch as usual. Next we went from mountains to rocky sand-ish dunes. Shoes were full of rocks. As we came into the valley, the sun came out and apparently we are now in the desert. It's hot. We finished the stage in 7 hours 10 minutes. Camp is a village called Peach Village. There are peach trees down by the toilets; refreshing. Instead of a tent we are staying in some local houses. A big room for the 8 of us. Tomorrow we get to eat breakfast at 2:30 am and get on a bus at 3:45. Stage 4 should start at 6 am. Stage 4 is the Flaming Mountain and should be hot. We are looking forward to some terrible pain. We have covered about 60 miles so far. The feet are in ok shape with just a few heel blisters. There are some serious blisters floating around camp so we can't really complain. Everyone in the tent is feeling good so far. We'll try and get some sleep early but the sun tends to go down at 10 pm; plus it's nice and steamy in the room. Tylenol PM to the rescue once again. Thanks for the emails and comments.

Steve: Mom, Dad, Sara...Feeling good, no worries

Brandon: Hi everybody. Going well and getting ready to do 60 miles day after tomorrow. I have tissues to dry the tears.

Stage 2 was 19 miles.  Woke up feeling pretty good despite never covering 20 miles with a fully loaded bag. Unlike yesterday the hard section (9 miles or so) was first. This worked out extremely well. This is actually the longest we have covered in 2 days (39 miles). Otherwise the stage was uneventful, we climbed some hills and then spent most of the time in a riverbed and on a dirt road. Scenery was nice and we got a few pictures with the locs.

We're in a tent with 8 people total, 4 of which are destroying the race for a living. They placed 10, 15, 33, 40 something. The other half of us are pro walkers so we get in hours after them. 5 hours 20 minutes today. In case you forgot Stage 5 is 62 miles.

Tomorrow is another 20 odd miles, weather should be getting hotter and the course is harder. Overall we are feeling good and should be ready for 7 hours tomorrow. Met more lawyers, dentists, and investment bankers. Shower would be great but it's still 5 sweaty days away. Short entry today the creative juices are not flowing and humor is running low. Thanks for the emails/comments, they are so uplifting. Especially the ones from work. We got in front of some cameras today by accident. Those pictures will probably be cut.

27 June 2010 08:25 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Today we finally started the 'race'. Allegedly, the first stage is 20 easy miles. False.

First half was a better time than sitting in Durham, maybe. The views were good and you can't really take good enough photos to show them. The course is marked with pink sprinkler flags about every 25 meters. There is a crew of sweepers that walks in the absolute back picking up the flags. If you see them, you are the last person on the course. We spent plenty of quality time with them for about 30-45 minutes. We decided to go out easy and experienced great success.

Only thing is you can only walk in the back for so long without losing faith in self.  After a 30 minute lunch and seeing the sweeper team zero in on our 20, we decided to launch Crush Fest 8000. This would later prove to be a bad decision. We hammered away and passed plenty of people through the 2 checkpoints. Things were going well until the hills came up. By hill I mean cliff. Hands and feet cliffs. Fall=die cliffs. We went up and down and scored some good pictures there. Speaking of which, we had thought it would be day 3 when we stopped speaking. Day 1 = I hate you, and your face. We passed Obi Wan's house so we had to be on high alert for sand people. Luckily they left us alone. The rest of the day we walked up and down, mostly up. We ended up finishing the stage in 6 hours 50 minutes. Hopefully the wheels don't fall off tomorrow. We're at camp in the middle of the flats, should be terribly cold tonight. Tylenol PM to the rescue. Overall the views were dialed, you can't show them without being here. Romantic.

Off to choke down some freeze dried food again. We have some hammers in our tent, those guys are killing the course.  Places 10, 24, 25, 60-something. We ended up 98 and 99 I think. Thanks for checking up, all 6 of you. Richard the Ruiner sends his regards. Read other blogs for a much better description of today. 20 more miles in the morning, difficult then easy unlike today. By the way stage 5 is now 60 miles instead of 56. Stage 6 is 11 miles of pure sand dunes. Off to eat and gas up the tent.

You guys are doing awesome! I saw like 50 pictures of Lee just killing the race and coming in 1st during Stage 1, only to realize that it was not Lee, but a real, live, legit Chinaman. There is officially 1 picture of you guys.... and one of Steve staring at a group of small children. Hmm, about that. Despite this, you guys are killing it! Keep it up :-)

Brandon: When exhausted & tired- repeat silently or to yourself: "sahn sahn joe lew bah yow wu, give me power and energy - thank you, thank you, thank you!" Repeat often many times as you move on! Try it! Give it all you got - your goal was to attend - but finishing the race will be a winner! Proud of you!! asaulee

Posted On: 27 Jun 2010 11:39 pm

Brandon: Remember the Ole Pake style - when you get tired and winded "Breath & exhale" from below your "Belly Button" (I mean CHI-KUNG)- not from your chest! Replenish your energy! (keep your mind on your breath) as you do it!!

Posted On: 27 Jun 2010 11:09 pm

Keep your goal in mind and keep your mind on things that matter! We are with you in our hearts and pray all of God's blessings on you continually. By the time you get this you will be starting day 3. theme song for the trip "stayin alive" love to you both , lisa and steve quigley

We did #1 mayhem today with an extra round in your honor. Of course Jimmy sandbagged his way thru most of them. Keep up the good work!

26 June 2010 08:43 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

#1 arrival day is today. we experience great success. 32 Hour travel time from RDU to Urumqi, best day ever. After several days of romantic sight-seeing and hot sauna action we left this afternoon for camp.

Plenty of off-road bus river crossings and we are at camp. Weather is a little colder than expected, we also have a ton of food and were advised to get rid of some food. We promptly declined. That is about it for now, we are about to go stuff our faces full of slim jims, peanut butter, and beef jerky. An entire year in the making with 4 weeks (maybe) of training should be on the road tomorrow. Hi Mom. Hi Elaine.

We are eating food out of a bag in matching clothes, just terrible. Everyone here is a lawyer.

Hope you are doing better than we are.

Love,

Steve & Brandon

Hello to then entire population of the world, or the 38 people who may ever read this. Here is a glimpse into the rigorous training schedule my 'team' has been on:

Nov 21 2009: After not running for an entire year, ran 19.4 miles w/hangover (just call it 20)  in 3 hours. Immediately followed by no further training until late December due to some type of overuse injury. Surprise!
