Just got back from a great 18 mile run, in glorious sunshine, which made a great change to a couple of weeks ago which was in the snow! Good training for the Last Desert I suppose.... Also lost about 4 pounds in sweat today, so the heat is really coming on and will need to start carrying water again soon. Probably a good idea to start carrying a pack anyway now, to get used to running with increasing amounts of weight. Anyway, time to take daughter for a driving lesson....

Pleased to say that I'm back out and running again - yeeha. I took 6 weeks off over Christmas, which has helped in the healing process, but I've really paid for eating too much, as the first runs of the new year were tough. The knee pain continues, but not as bad as before - went to the docs before Christmas to get a referral to the physio, but there's a 12 week waiting list.....oh well, just going to keep doing the same. Ran the Falcon Flyer today, which was a 23 mile (more like 24/25) offroad around Robin Hoods Bay - lots of hills, as well as sleet, rain and very muddy and wet conditions. A great race and well worth doing, especially as the proceeds go to the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team, who rely on fund raising to keep them going, and are all volunteers. Next organised run is the Dentdale 14, which is a 14 mile road race, on 13 March. in Cumbria

Hey well Done Steve on a great run in the Falcon Flyer today...sounds like it was fun!
Look after that knee and I hope it gets better soon. I have had a few problems myself and my Japanese sports therapist has got me doing more running in the water, more time on the bike and heaps of leg work on the fit ball for strengthening. It has helped considerable.
Good luck for the Dentdale next month.
I also like your approach of a weekly blog to stay motivated..I am going to try this!

Ran my last organised race of the year on Sunday, with the Thirsk 10 mile. It was rather wet with lots of surface water, but got a new PB so pretty happy with that. Also completed 10k cross-training on a rower and then a 10k tempo run today. Still worried about my knee which seems to be getting worse - doesn't hurt when running, but just when sitting - main discomfort is slight stinging sensation around the front of the knee. Brain says to stop running and stick to stretching and strengthening exercises, but the heart wants to continue running......I was planning on starting the FIRST program, ready for a half-marathon in January and the London marathon in April.....the brain is probably going to win out with me not running from now until the year-end and then I'll take stock again. I've also started thinking about the kit to take and trying to keep the weight down. On previous events (MDS and Libyan challenge), I carried more than needed for that extra comfort, but paid for it in extra weight (pack was around 14k); this time I'm thinking of going the other way and take just what I'll need; I don't have any expensive light-weight kit, so its going to be extra food and luxuries that go - once I've been through my list, I'll update the Equipment list on the blog. Happy running......

Decided it's about time I joined the blogging community, so here we go.....
As the cold UK winter months have finally arrived the motivation to train is dwindling, so I thought that writing a blog each week would give me an incentive to train and have something to report on.
I've not been running very much over the last few years due to an old knee injury getting gradually worse; most events have been long walks, with the odd bit of slow jogging down the hills. Getting the desire to run again, I finally went under the knife late last year and had an arthroscopy, which is the best thing I did as within 3-4 weeks I was running again pain free! So I've had a good year of running this year and hope to continue building up the strength and stamina for running more over longer distances.
Having said that, the 50 mile Rotherham Romp in October caused some knee pain after about 25 miles (same knee, but at the front, rather than on the inside), which seems to be due to doing too much without building up the distance. So I'm now building the mileage up gently each week and including leg stretching and strengthening exercises.
Just off to cross-train on a rowing machine, so will update again next week with progress and other thoughts on the event.
