Gobi March (2010) blog posts from Philippe Pech

04 July 2010 02:54 am (GMT+01:00) Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna

Big day is over,

I don't know what to say anymore. It has been so intense, physically and mentally. 112 km through the Desert, through 1000 of feelings, emotions, fears, scary moments, pains, beauty. I have so much stories. We have been all warriors yesterday from the winner until the last competitor (which still didn't arrive after 36 hours..)

Now we rest in the middle of the dune. it's 43 C in the tent. We try to drink as much as we can with salt pill. We wish that the sun can go down. Unfortunately the long day made a lot of people to stop . not everybody will see the final line. 22km to go tomorrow in the Dune. It will be hard with the feet full of blisters... but the goal is closed...I'm already sad to almost close this adventure.

No time to write long blog the generator is down... battery are running out.

Love form the Turpan Desert

The Race in the Race,

Stage 4 is over and we had a good overview about what wait for us tomorrow. It was hot, running between small canyon across dune. You try to escape from the sun but it's not possible, he is taking care that will be boiled at the end of the week. Only thing that we can do is keep on going and drink, drink and drink. I'm lucky that i can finish my day quite early, relax, rehydrate. (feet are looking good/ knie hold me when I'm going down the dune)

But next to it the desert is BEAUTIFUL. I take as many pictures that I can to share them with you later on...

Tomorrow is the BIG day: 100Kms, they add 10 k for the fun :-(. Believe me I'm fucking scared... Fears are back. This is the race in the Race. By itself 100 k is long but with the high temperature bouuuuuuu. They expect between 40 and 45 C. It might take one day and one night to complete the stage so no worries in no new messages on the blog tomorrow. I will be busy running, thinking about all of you.

Send you sandy kisses from China

Philippe

29 June 2010 09:48 am (GMT+01:00) Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna

We are now very closed to the second lowest place in the world. We lost 800 meters hight in one stage. However it was far to be an easy stage: Spend 1.30 hours in the river bed, running on unstable stones and crossingrivers. The second oart of the stage, we followed sand and dusty track. We were lucky that we started early this morning in order to avoid the hotest moments of the day.

Tomorrow 4.00 AM we will start the day, because the oven of China (name of the turpan bassin) will be turn on....

Regarding the camp of tonight we had the good surpirse to arrive at the Peach Village, meet with local people, I have been luck to look at the football game as well !!! Hup Hup Holland. We had even the luxe to jump in a small river. It was cold, it felt like a mountain lake. Now I can only dream about a nice BBQ, a bottle of Prosecco and some fresh stranberry... (not good to dream about food, but the food reserve is low :-(

I would like to thank everybody that send me emails and comments on my blogs. It felt good at the end of the day to ready some lovely email.

See you tomorrow after a nice 36 K across hot moutains, salt lake, ravine, canyon...it will be fun.

Love from China

Nou je bent al eind op weg, it sounds all very impressive.

28 June 2010 08:59 am (GMT+01:00) Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna

We get slowly into it...

After two days in the mountain with an average high of 2100 meters, we will start going down to reach the Turpan Bassin tomorrow. We will enter in the Oven of China..
Always hard for me to leave the mountains behind... but I know that I will see them very soon again.
Leaving the mountains has positive things: More flat track, and much warmer during the night. At Camp 2 the temperature dropped to less than 5 C cold...
The bad thing is that it will get much warmer 40C during the day and much sandy...So I still stay very humble if from of the desert that I don't now...
But well we will see tomorrow and I don't have to complain the body is responding well.
Big kisses from Camp 3 with a great view on a canyon.. The full moon will make it even more beautiful tonight.
Special vibes for all the runners around the world

Speak to you tomorrow

Big kisses for the small Pech kids. Dad loves you.

27 June 2010 07:27 am (GMT+01:00) Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna

For my first stage race I decided this mroning to switch to the learning Mode. Quickly I could this the top gun guys... ouah they were fast and me I was not awake yet (well didn't really sleep with 8 mens in one tent it was quite noisy grrrrrrrr)

So during the first 17 k I just run at my rythme. it was flat. Between CP2 and Camp 2, we left the buttom of the valley to start climbing, climbing and climbing and again climbing. The temperature race has well. I tried to keep my head cold and keep my speed. ... I was running/walking alone the last 15K of stage. Time to think, to visit the dream factory...

Suddendly a chinese girl told me that the camp was not so far anymore "10 minutes Sir" .. well it took me 25 minutes.... but I had the good suprise to have the team of RacingthePlanet waiting for me with Chinses Music... They said that I did well.... Not sure well.... but i should have finished in the top 15....(much too quick Philippe...).Tomorrow I will slow down

Time for the cup of soup. and after big diner with Pasta bolognese made by Adventure food.

Big kisses across Europe

Speak to you tomorrow

Philippe

Move from fear to action, even if you think you will fail.

It is the title of the chapter of an article that has been given to me by a very closed friend of me. Today those words make 100% sense to me. In 12 hours the 2010 edition of the Gobi March will start and there is no way back. And you can't imagine how many fears could have hold me back. Fear of failure, fear of being alone, fear of going broke, fear of the distance, fear of not been well equiped, fear of not been well prepared.

But tomorrow I will do the thing that i thought that i could not imagine. I found the courage to face all those fearssss

Tomorrow I will do the first steps in the desert of Gobi....and believe me it,s already looking very beauttiful with great people around....

Chineses greatings

Love for eveybody

time to go to my blue...sleeping bag

13 May 2010 07:46 am (GMT+01:00) Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna

Hi there,

I realise like no other (because I'm French) that food is crucial to completing such challenge.

But why food is so important:

- Food is our fuel and without fuel the machine will stop
- Food is also responsible for almost 50% of the total weight of our backpack (650gr per day!! / Ok I eat a lot)
- Food is also important for morale

So better spend some time to think about it  and ask ourselves the right questions:

- How much room is in our pack?
- How much weight can we carry?
- How much fuel will we need per day (2200kcal is a minimum)
- Will we have access to warm water during the day to "cook"? (the answer is no / only at the campsite)

My food has been chosen carefully and let me share with you my menu for the coming race. (I'm not an expert neither a "Chef" , so if you have any suggestions please feel free to add your comments or to send me your advices)

Drink: Green Tea + energy drink lemon from AdventureFood 1liter/ 65gr/ 241kcal / per day in the morning + a lot of water during the day (better to drink every 15 minutes during the day)

Breakfast:
Expedition Breakfast from AdventureFood. 693 kcal for 150Gr :  Nourishing warm breakfast based on cereals, milk, raisins, apple and roasted hazelnuts.

Energy Bar and Gel: 2 gels per day + 1 Bar (162Kcal/40gr)

Snack / Lunch:  I will use a variety of dried fruit (3Kcal/gr), nuts (6Kcal/gr), grains and smoked meat (1kcal/gr). It must be easy to eat with high Kcal. I plan a minimum of 450 Kcal

Diner: Soup from cup of Soup 80kcal for 65gr or Noodle  / Freeze dried meal from Adventure Food average 600kcal for 150gr / desert from AdventureFood like chocolate mousse 350 kcal for 85gr

Nutrition supplement: I'm not an expert in it and I have difficulty to swallow pills so I will only go for the Salt pill to avoid deshydratation.

I would advice everybody to try once the food that you are planning to bring with you to test the flavor and to see if your stomach can handle such food....

The good news is that we still have some weeks before the race to have nice diner at home :-)

Bon Appetit

Philippe

11 May 2010 11:56 am (GMT+01:00) Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna

Everybody has a reason to run...isn't it?

Some of my friends call me Forrest Gump; Honestly I don't know if I should take it as a compliment or not but in the movie Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) said:

"That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going."

Maybe Forrest Gump didn't know why he was running, but I do know.

I'm coming from a background of martial arts during school days, and subsequently as a mountain climber. I have discovered running as a way of keeping fit and staying healthy. Since then, I have been actively involved myself in many running races across Europe. I had completed few Ultra Trail Marathons.

While I have been a life-long "sportsman", I never expected the sport to take on such a personal meaning as it does since my son Joaquin was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy when he was only 3 years old. Since then, watching a typical child ride a bike or run across a soccer field is something that I have learned not to take for granted. Since this day, every time I go out for my run I realized how lucky I'm... just to be able to RUN.

So 2010, I will participate to my first Racing the planet race: Gobi March.

Those races are not only a physical challenge for me. I want to make this event a fundraising event for the stiching Prinses Beatrix Fonds and next to it I will be very proud if I can raise overall awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in the public consciousness, and that increased awareness helps to spur education and research, which may lead to advances in treatment and care for Duchenne patients.

Let’s give all our boys a chance to live their lives to the fullest.

Hi all over the planet,

Gobi March 2010 will be my first race of the 4th Desert, and I'm honored to join that select group of people. I already look forward to meet you all there, to run together, to chat to share a cup of tea at the fire place.

This blog is also my first bog, so I have to get use of it if I want to share experiences, motivations, dreams and maybe some small fears.

So first I will read all the blogs already posted here and come back to you soon.

Untill there, I wish you all a good preparation, enjoy each miles of Kms.

Kind regards

Philippe
