NuNu, What a HERO!!!! Congratulations on attaining your Dream in such a magnificent manner. We are indeed exceedingly proud parents. As your friend Mo writes so eloquently, you are truly remarkable and unique, and our daughter. I admit that on seeing your photo at the finishing line, I shed tears of relief and pride. Love you loads. Mum, Dad and a vigorous wagging of the tail from Caelum. xxx

You are AMAZING... If anyone ever deserves the legendary title of being called Janine the Machne it's you. The very fact that you ran the final stage after everything you have endured physically, mentaly and emotionally marks you as a truly remarkable and unique woman. Your strength of character, courage, resilience and willpower go way beyond the normal limits of most normal, sane humans. You are quite simply a machine. Either that or you are just plain mental! When other competitors go home and recall their own stories of the 'truly incredible inspiring and caring people" that they were blessed enough to meet this week they will talk about you. Congratulations and incredibly well done, you have earned your celebrity status as a hardcore veteran of the 4 Deserts Club. Your adventures have captivated and inspired all the ANTS this week and we look forward to hearing all about it when you return. Your memoirs are going to be a bestseller for sure!!!

You lady, in awe. Just utter, absolute, awe. At your stamina, resilience, strength of mind, and clearly, of [pint sized] body. (Batsh** crazy, natch) But I think after nearly 30 years, this is probably as good a time as any to tell you something I've been thinking. For a long while. In my entire life I've ever met anyone I look up to, and respect more than you. You are a beacon to every woman out there who hides that spark inside her in case it challenges the light of others; who says "I just can't"; who looks to be carried because she's never been told she's smart and strong enough to walk in life unsupported. Who thinks being clever isn't compatible with being feminine. You're amongst your peers tonight, my angel: the Undefeated. All of you have shown ambition and competition, but not at any cost. No sharp elbows, no politics, no factions and no resentment of achievement nor what's in each other's backpacks. If only the rest of us could live on this small, fragile planet with the same dignity shown this week by a 119 people sitting under the Atacama skies tonight. Of course, I still have absobloodylutely NO intention of ever buying, much less wearing, a pair of trainers, (EVER) but you missy, in the vernacular of my 12 year old: R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Now sod off, eat pizza, drink Tequila (lots of) and give my face husband a kiss from me! xxxxxxxxx

You really are just amazing! That post brought a tear to my eye - wow, completely choked me up. Just read Ryan's post just now too - I'm stunned by this last stage and ever so slightly lost for words… Hey! And guess what, I spotted a "Scott Waring" and thought "I used to work in collaboration with a Scott Waring when I lived in London" - and so I looked on his pic - and lo and behold it's him!!! Say hi from Tara from Hamptons! Hope he remembers me - I remember him!!! Can't believe he's doing what he's doing too - I'm very impressed! I very fond memories of the projects we worked on together in London! Anyway, we can discuss more when you get back. Enjoy the last 8km. You are there now, aren't you? you're hardly going to give up now. So that's you done. 4 deserts indeed! Fuckin' A!!! xxxxx

You need some well deserved R&R when you return.....before you get ready to do it all again in Morocco! At least you won't get cold there! See you back in HK soon! Enjoy crossing the finish line, you worked hard for it!

Hi NUNu, I don't know if you read my last email in which I explained that I have sent you an email every day but,t being computer illiterate have sent them all but one, to your first blog. (So please turn to page one). You have been and still are, on an amazing adventure. Imagine the extraordinary tales you have to relate to your grandchildren, as what you have achieved is absolutely extraordinary. We are very proud of you. I can imagine with what delight you will stand under that shower and turn on the tap. And Oh! the bliss of clean sheets and a good nights sleep. You and all the competitors have shown amazing courage fighting against extreme elements. That old cliché 'When the going gets tough, the tough get going' comes to mind. Well the end is in sight and soon you will be with your boys. They and Matt must be mighty proud of you. Well done Darling Girl. Love you loads. Mum, Dad and Caelum. X X X X X X

JtM By the time you read this you will probably be exhausted but euphoric from a long painful day and night. Hopefully running under a stunning star filled desert sky inspired you to reach the finish line. So it's one more day done, one massive checkpoint reached, one more stage to go. You are nearly there now. Not even the 73km Long March of the Atacama Desert can break you. The way you take pain and suffering and harness its energy into a positive force is remarkable. I guess that's why all of the ANTS call you Janine the Machine. Sleep well in your Walker's Crisps bag and rustle all night long..you have earned it!! Overcome tremendous adversity Demonstrate incredible resilience Inspire others by showing the above. You don't just Talk the Talk You Walk the Walk.

Janine, First of all gutsy effort. I know the pain you are going through as as we all know you thrive on that. Yes there are moments of doubt but it will pass and another day will dawn and you'll forget them. Remember our hard sessions and how good you felt after? You need to visualise those moments and control the negative thoughts. As I always said "Turn a negative into a positive". Everyone is suffering, it's how you deal with it. Utter inspiring and 120% behind you, c'mon mate you got this!!!! Mike

Wow, Janine. Just wow. Unbelievable what you are going through. Imagine the euphoria and the joy upon finishing. You cannot give up now. And I know you won't… You've missed a few crazy days here with massive flash floods, landslips and a lot of destruction as Typhoon Mujigae swept through. All calm today and the sun came out. The calm after the storm. Imagine your calm after your storm. You have to ride it, live through it, keep going, keep going… And then you will meet your calm after your storm and you can bask in the glory. Not long now… Love you Janine. And love what you do! I absolutely have to go out for a drinkie with you when you are back - I need to hear more...

Halfway! Last night after spending one hour in the medical tent getting my shoulder taped up and 3 toenails drilled, I questioned how I was going to make it through today.

Turns out pain is a great motivator. Decided the only way to survive the day was to go as hard as I could and minimize the amount of time I was out on the course.

05 October 2015 06:26 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

The Good:
Beautiful out of this world scenery! Vast white desert, canyons like Mars and volcanoes in the background. Lovely bit through a river gorge which we had to cross about 30 times, sometimes thigh deep. Took a long stop at CP1 to change socks and retape feet but still have a massive blood blister under one toe. Best part of the day: running down a massive steep sand dune halfway which was one of those Life Is Wonderful Moments.

The Bad:
Extreme temperatures. Freezing sub zero at night. Woke up at 2AM again shivering and could not sleep again. So cold - thank goodness I had 2XU thermal compression tights. And boiling hot during the day. Very hard to manage. I was sucking water out of my bottle and spitting it into my hand and pouring it over my head.

The Ugly:
It was only a matter of time, lugging around a heavy pack but my trapped nerve in my shoulder caused me a lot of pain today. The medics strapped it up as per my physio's notes - and there I not a lot to do apart from try to manage the pain.it was a ridiculously long day today as much of the terrain was very technical. Rocky river beds, crunchy salt plains and an uphill vertical sand dune we cursed (seriously, after 44k in extreme heat and hard terrain, they send us up a 45 degree dune...??).

Tomorrow is going to be long again - just hope shoulder copes.

One more day in the bag and another significant checkpoint reached. By the time you get this you should have conquered the legendary salt flats..I hope your new shoes proved themselves to be as tough as you are!!! Thursday will be a challenging day for sure but you're more than halfway there and before you know it this epic adventure will be over so enjoy every moment and remember, no matter how difficult it seems, you are privileged to be able to do what you're doing right now and there are millions of people who would love to be in your shoes right now (maybe without the blisters)...

Hmmm, no sign of your Day 3 blog yet, although others have been posted. Sounds like a tough crusty day - hope your shoulder held up. Some great pics of you on the website, looking strong. Saw a great idea on a French lady's blog - heat up a rock in the campfire and slip it into the bottom of your sleeping bag! She said she was toasty all night - reminded me of gingerly clutching those dodgy plastic water bottles filled with boiling water in the Gobi yurt! Keep smiling my lovely, you'll be more than half done by the time you read this. xx

Dear Janine, sounds like you're doing an amazing job - have been thinking of you heaps from New Zealand - we're still here. It sounds beautiful but I agree with Allison - need to find someone warm to cuddle up to at night!!! So sorry about your shoulder - keep up with the pain killers and I will send all my good calma & more love your way to help get rid of the pain too. You are an incredible and gorgeous girl. Love the sound of the dune running! Bummer about your shoulder going again - can you find a friendly masseuse out there, and someone to snuggle up to at night to keep warm...? Despite all that, you've crept up 2 places in the overall rankings and kept your age group lead :-) Keep strong - you know the drill! xxx PS Only clicking this button once today - despite the temptation to just keep jabbing at the little bugger when nothing happens on this CRAP website :-)))

04 October 2015 08:31 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Today started in utter misery - I woke up at 2AM freezing cold and could not get back to sleep. Lay there shivering, listening to one poor tent mate throwing up and another snoring like you would not believe. My sleeping pad sounded like a bag of Walkers crisps being opened every time I rolled over (apologies to tent mates).

We got up at 5AM and huddled round eating breakfast and feeling exhausted, cold and miserable. Best moment was when Mart looked up and said "Livin'the dream"- at which point we all burst out laughing.

By contrast, running nearly 40k in the hot desert across rocks and canyons was quite good fun. Until the last 10k when I had a sense of humour failure and just wanted to get it over with. I ran the first leg with a great girl called Rosemary who has run 197 marathons including 10 marathons in 10 days !!! We had fun chatting together for around 10k but it's hard to maintain the same pace as someone else over those distances and in those conditions, so I ran the rest alone which was not as fun. We went through some amazing canyons (and almost tripped over a dead donkey).

Got to camp in 42ndplace overall, 6thwoman. A good day but there is a long way to go !

Best part of this race is I have some great tent mates. Ryan and Scott both did brilliantly, finishing in the top 20. Charles and I played tag, taking it in turns to overtake each other. (Mark, do not believe a word he says in his blog!). We are having so much fun - when we're not running...One of the best parts of these races is the camaraderie.

Day 1: tick.

Heading off to camp today - at 3,200 metres altitude. Did 3 high treks this week which all went well until yesterday with massive headache and nose bleed lasting 10 hours! Hopefully ticked that box and will be ok now...??

My strategy is to take it slowly on Day 1 and not blow up early or suffer for the rest of the week.

Go Girl Go!!!!!! Sounds like you are having a pretty rough time out in the wilds of Atacama. I was quite concerned when there was no blog from you yesterday; so it is quite a relief to open my computer this morning and read your latest blog. No! No nagging today. It is an extraordinary journey you have undertaken, which very few people I imagine can ever comprehend, never mind embark on. Perhaps as you run you could, in your mind, begin to write a book. Your blogs are so vivid and visual. Perhaps you could write a poem that I could plagiarize once more, when I am too lazy or too busy to fulfil my weekly assignment. (Just joking). Take good care of yourself. Much love Mum, Dad and Caelum. X X

Hi NuNu, What's this? no blog today! Hope all is well. I am quite late writing to you as I have had a busy day. It was my turn to take the Creative Writing class which was followed by a spot of shopping. Didn't get home till late. I see from some of the blogs it was very tough today, so hope you are OK. I regaled my class with your adventure and they thought you were simply fantastic; if not a little mad. Look forward to your next blog. Love you Darling Girl. Mum, Dad and of course Caelum. HiNuNu, Great to hear you are doing so well. Those practice runs at six in the morning really paid off. That, and your complete dedication; even on holiday. There you are, all that sun, whilst here in England we are having torrential rain with many places flooded. By the way I gather today was your first day, for some reason I thought it was the third. Wishful thinking on my part! Well Darling Girl keep it up, my thoughts are with you urging you on to Victory. Keep safe and enjoy. Much love Mum, Dad and Caelum. X X X XXX

So, despite the fact that this is my 4th RTP race, I have allowed myself to get pretty stressed and anxious over the past few weeks about what lies ahead. This is partly a good thing, as you can never take it for granted that things won't go horribly wrong in such extreme events. But it's also a bad thing, as you need to maintain a positive mental attitude to get through each day.

My anxiety even manifested itself in physical symptoms of tension headaches, tight chest, stomach cramps and a flu-like feeling.

From the mouth of George Leigh Mallory in 1922: "The first question which you will ask and which I must try to answer is this, "What is the use of climbing Mount Everest?" and my answer must at once be, "It is no use." There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn a little about the behaviour of the human body at high altitudes, and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron. We shall not find a single foot of earth that can be planted with crops to raise food. It's no use. So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means and what life is for." Marvel in the sheer joy, Janine...

Off to Chile soon to attend to unfinished business!

Having signed up for The Gobi March in 2013 as a one-off desert race, I cannot believe I am now about to embark on my 4th Ultra in the 4 Desert series. Utter madness!!

I have no idea how I ended up running across the Jordanian desert last year, let alone Antarctica, which struck me as the height of insanity. But here I am about to do it AGAIN...!! I may as well finish what I started...??

So I asked my ultra friends for some tips on running Atacama. Here are some of their words of wisdom:

"Giant sand dunes, extreme heat, sharp salt plains, a 10km stretch that takes place IN a slot canyon river. So expect blisters like you would not believe. You will love it."

"It's the hardest of the 4 deserts. My favourite!"

"It has the highest attrition rate of all the races, about 25% drop out rate. But don't worry, you'll be fine."

And my personal favourite: "It's absolutely horrendous. You have got to do it!"
