Alex, you're a bloody legend! Well done. What an achievement. You are such a grafter I know you would have pushed yourself to your limits before saying enough. It must have taken so much courage to do that and I know you'll have made the right decision without a doubt. Enjoy the rest of your time there. Take it all in and just relax! You are soooo done! You and the desert are square :)

You may be very, very proud of what you HAVE achieved, which is far, far greater than most people could even contemplate. Focus on that. You are extraordinarily strong, both mentally and physically, and we are all so proud of you, Zander. Enjoy your home comforts now. You deserve them. And thank you for your inspirational example to others. Much love xxxxx

Alex, regardless of how you are feeling about the race right now, you should know that having your company over 30km was one of the best parts of my journey. You kept me sane and grounded. Joining this race, finishing is only one of my goals. Another is to meet great people like yourself. Thank you for sending me a message during the long stage. I actually left you a message at one of the CPs on day 5 as well because I knew you were suffering badly after that horrendous, hellish stage 4. At the end of the day, there is no "finish line" in real life. It's only how we go through it. You displayed great sportmanship through and through and I'm very fortunate to learn that from you. Remember how we talked about how lucky we are. We are young and time is on our side. This is only the beginning of things that we will do and accomplish. Now, rest up well Alex :)

Alex. I'm sorry to read that you couldn't make it over the finish line. But I'm convinced you've made the right decision. In the end your body and mind needs to be one and if it doesn't feel right it's better to stop. But remember: what you've achieved is phenomenal. 170k under those circumstances is an unbelievable accomplishment. Most of us barely make it up from the sofa. You can be proud of yourself Alex, no matter what. And once you've got some distance from this race you will be able to reflect and analyse. In the end it will you make stronger. And with this experience you know what to do or change for your next adventure. So get some rest, good food and a long massage. Take care of your body and have a safe trip home. I can't wait to hear all the details. C y soon. XOXO #alexyouaremypersonalhero

Head up mate. Not many people would have even consider taking on that sort of distance over that terrain so to have got as far as you did is a massive achievement. Sure that once you've had a chance to look back on it you'll be immensely proud and hopefully it'll drive you to take on the next challenge. Catch up when you're back.

You made a hugely difficult and gutsy decision and now it probably feels like it's all over. It isn't. As you take charge of sofa, remote and Muffin and tuck into home food you'll gradually be able to begin to reflect on your experiences of the past week. We have seen your heroic determination, fantastic physical stamina and, above all, amazing mental power. And now, absolute courage to do what is right for You in a situation governed by extremes. That is your biggest accomplishment and deeply, deeply impressive Now I really will have to pop with pride!X

Another brief one from me as it is already dark snd getting cold here. Today was mentally very challnging. From the sand dunes at the start my ITB on my right side was tightening up and by the halfway stage I couldnt bend my right leg. We then had to cover 14km of salt flats which I managed to limp across. The limping however gave me tendinitis in my left shin so i am curently wrapped in all sorts of tape!

Some stunning scenery today though which was nice. I wasn

Such an inspiration and just shows what the human body is capable of, appreciate every moment and every limp as I know your gonna wish you were back there the minute you get back. Well done with your fundraising too! Wow that is a whole lot of cash for the charity! I'm looking forward to reading your final blog! Take care and sending you positive vibes!

Everyone in our office is now hooked into your updates and can't believe I know someone tough enough to do it! Best of luck on the final stage - dig in, and most of all enjoy and soak it all in! Your JustGiving page is doing so well too, and pays testamant to the inspiration that you are - once again, best of luck and enjoy x

Alex, by the time you read this comment the long march is lying behind you. And I am confident that you've given everything that's left in your body as both your physical and mental strength is so much bigger than you ever thought it would be before you entered this race. Injuries are challenging and I'm convinced the medical team has great experience and can you make feel better so you will make it to the finish line. Just keep going step by step. You are so close now to achieve what you've dreamt of and prepared for for such a long time. I'm so amazed over your accomplishments and will power, you are an true inspiration and I'm proud to know you. Enjoy the last stage of the race and reward yourself with hopefully a hot shower/bath and a relaxing massage at the hotel followed by huge amounts of food. #youcandoitalex "That's the thing about running: your greatest runs are rarely measured by racing success. Alex, you are doing so well on such an intense and difficult challenge. It sounds like today was difficult but I'm so proud of you for getting through it, you truly are one of a kind and you just have to remember every step you are getting closer and closer to the end and what you are doing is phenomenal. I hope the injuries are alright... Every step must be a real achievement... Just keep going and remembering how much support you have from everyone who loves and adores you at home. Thinking of you every step of the way. Keep it up babe. Sending lots of love and support across the world. Remember pain is temporary, pride is forever! This is already an achievement that you should be immensely proud of. Xxxxx

Another mega achievement yesterday. How do you do it? Had to google ITB - sounds horrid and what a hero for plugging on through all that. And still finding the time to enjoy the scenery!! Am speechless. Hope the tapes do their job today/tonight/tomorrow. Thinking of you out there every step of the way and knowing it is a step closer to your next hot bath, steak and chips and beer! And your just giving total has gone over £4,000 which is another huge achievement - can't say often enough how proud of you all this makes me. Best of luck for the rest of this stage and enjoy the run in when you get there. With all my love xxxx

Zander reading your posts makes me feel weak - we are all popping with pride just knowing you. Your mental and physical stamina will get you to the end and when you look back on what you've achieved - wowzer! Glad you were able to enjoy the scenery whilst limping for 14km - that's like me walking to Waitrose - no chance! Hope the messages make you smile, and just remember how many people are cheering you on at every painful step. Buckets of love from us all xxxx

I have bipolar disorder (diagnosed at age 38) and understand only too well how mental illness can take anyone from a high functioning life to being limited to doing Carry On jigsaws as your brain is so fried! Anyway, I digress.... keep walking and keep being kind to yourself. Best wishes, Wendy

Quick update as I am exhausted

Stage 3 is complete but it was tough. 39km is just over 9 hours. The first 17km were alright and I was able to run but then we hit the salt flats and everything slowed down. The terrain was horrific and we crawled along for 10km. I spent about 30mins at check point 2 as I felt completely drained. We were given tangerine each which tasted like heaven! I had trudged cross the salt flats with a Danish guy called Heinrich. The two of us and two Finnish people then head off on the 11.8km stint to camp. This was extremely difficult and I am not sure I could have made it if I was on my own. The first part was a mixture of sand and loose rock. The second was a lot of sand dunes which involved taking several breaks to empty my shoed.

Finally made it to camp and feel pretty good. Blisters haven

Alexander You are a complete hero - another massive achievement yesterday and hopefully yet another under your belt by the time you read this. WELL DONE AGAIN! Reading your blog and some of the others too and seeing the photos/videos really brings home what a challenge you have taken on and how important your inner resolve is alongside all that physical fitness. The whole thing is completely awesome and I could not be more proud of you. And it is wonderful to read that you are "pretty good" after 3 stages - keep going and that will turn into "good" and then "really good". Hope tum has settled down today and you get a good night before the Long March. I know you will manage that intelligently and with an eye on the wonderful goal at the end of it. It is an awfully long way but you have lots and lots of time.It will be hard but you have already proved what you can achieve. Will miss your blog on friday morning but will look out for it later in the day. Grandma has tried to send you a message but I don't know whether she has succeeded. The race website is a new digital frontier for her! We are all thinking of you. Off to Oslo in the morning and then Paris on Friday morning but in internet reach throughout. Rugby quarter finals all pretty much lined up as expected but with no England obviously. The big games this weekend are Wales v Australia and Ireland v France which will decide who tops those groups.Lots of debate about Lancaster's future. Best of luck for tomorrow darling. One more big push and you are almost home and dry.It will be so rewarding. all my love xx

That was a long day. I decided to walk all of today as we were warned about some tricky terrain that could cause a few ankle injuries. Two of the quickest guys in my tent both hurt their ankles and one has already pulled out. 10 hours after setting off I arrived at camp 2. Mentally feeling a lot stronger which is promising. My main concern now is food as being out for that long burns a lot of calories.

Today's stage started off with about 20 river crossings. The first few were chilly but after that I got used to them and kind of enjoyed it. Having changed my socks at the first checkpoint, we then climbed up a canyon for about an hour and were rewarded with some amazing views. After running along the ridge we then got to sprint down very steep sand dunes which was fun. A couple of long stretches to finish which were tough but I made it in the end. Not much light left so need to make a visit to the medic tent to look at some minor blisters (I am in good shape compared to some others!).

Thank you for your messages. They really do help snd give me such a boost. Good to hear things back home are as per normal with Ipswich and England losing! Catch up tomorrow.

Another huge well done for yesterday. Sounds like another amazing day as well illustrated by the photos on the website (but none of you today sadly:( ). I could almost be jealous! NOT! What you have done already is an astonishing achievement and it can so easily be seen from the photos and videos - the drama of the landscape and the terrain never mind the distances you are covering. Almost half gone now already which is a massive plus too and I am sure you will go from strength to strength as you acclimatise and learn the boundaries/rules of the road. I find it hard to think of much else and have been boring anyone who will listen to me half to death all week. Hope today has gone well, been thinking of you all the time and can't wait for the next report. Stay strong and sleep well. With all love xxxxx PS Liverpool have sacked Rogers and Cook got a fifty on the opening day of the England tour to UAE but not much else to report.

Wow Alex! It sounds like today you had some real highs and what a great 2nd day... I am so incredibly proud of you and what an amazing adventure you are doing. You really are challenging your self and doing the most amazing job of it, i don't know any of our friends who are doing something as phenomenal as you right now! Keep going and keep that mental attitude strong, it sounds like you are doing really well. Thinking of you and try and soak it all up because it will be over before you know it! Sending lots of love and good luck your way. Keep it up!! xxxx

Stage 1 complete

Wow that was tough. I don't know what I was expecting but I found today a real challenge. We set off at 8am from our basecamp which was at 3,100m (the highest point on the course). The altitude really got to me to begin with but after a couple of descents I got into a rhythm of running along the flats and walking uphill. There were a couple of very long stints along open plains which were demoralising as nothing seemed to get any closer!

The worst of these was between checkpoint 2 and 3. A 7km slog across rocky ground followed by a 5km climb through a baking hot gorge to the next pit stop. Disgusting.

In total it took me 6 hours 15 mins to cover the 36km. The last 15km of those was all walking! My bag is very heavy and I am starting to pay for some of my kit choices already. My gaiters aren't doing a great job so my shoes are filling with debris and sand. The Vivobarefoot shoes themselves have taken a bit of a battering as well. The grip along the sole is being torn apart by the rough terrain and I have no idea how long they will last. Alongside that I can feel every stone that I stand on which isn't great.

It is 15.10 here so I have an afternoon of relaxing around the camp and eating. It's not very comfortable but I will have to make do with my air mattress.

Hopefully tomorrow won

Keep working hard mate and keep thinking positively. Put any kit issues to the back of the mind and just focus on the next day's distance. Go well over the next couple of stages, will be keeping tabs on your progress! Give it everything mate. X

We'll done Alex. You're doing such a good job already! Really impressed and know you will make it through. 1st stage will be the worst of it. Now just to settle in... I'll have a look on bear grylls webpage see if I can find a tip on making some better gaitors on the middle of the desert! Keep smiling! El and jeff

Sounds like a tough start but you'll get through it and will figure out solutions with your equipment problems. It's just another obstacle. But you're in the middle of the adventure of your life and you're doing great. Most of us back here wouldn't even dare to do the things you do. I admire your dedication and your mental strength. You can be proud over yourself and your achievements. Just keep going, you know one step in front of each other. Nothing's gonna stop you! #youcandoitalex

Basecamp 1

We arrived at the first base camp this afternoon. I unpacked my kit again (!) and have decided to lose some more snacks to reduce weight.

The camp is in the middle of a canyon and the views are amazing. Spag bol and some porridge for dinner. 36km tomorrow so hopefully shouldn

I arrived in San Pedro de Atacama yesterday afternoon after over 30 hours of travelling. It didn't seem that long as I was constantly moving from terminal to terminal in various different airports. I never fully relaxed either as there was always a concern that my bag wouldn't make it to each destination. Thankfully it did and in one piece with all my kit and absolutely exhausted!

Glad to read that your journey went well and that you and your kit arrived together. It's good that you have some stage nerves, it just makes you even more focused. Always remember that you've trained hard for this week and that you're well prepared. So embrace the moment, get some rest, eat a lot of food and enjoy every second of this adventure. #youcandoitalex

16 months of build up and I am now 5 days away from starting my biggest challenge yet. This race has always been 'that thing' I am doing in a few months time but now it is getting very real. I have got one more night in the UK before I fly out to Chile. It will be three flights and a bus transfer before I find myself in San Pedro de Atacama but I have got a day to relax before all the other competitors are due to arrive.

There will be a few last minute kit purchases at the airport but other than that I reckon I am all set to go. Bring it on!
