Atacama Crossing (2014) blog posts from Emily Woodland

10 October 2014 01:52 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

I’m a bit of an emotional wreck today as it finally sinks in that the title is all but sewn up, unless something disastrous happens on the last short day. I wouldn’t even let myself believe it until after CP5, 57km into the long day, so the feeling when I crossed the finish line was unbelievable. Ruthann and Cat were giving me a run for my money all day and it was a long old slog. I think the sand dune on section 4 will give me nightmares for a long time. By the last checkpoint my legs had nothing left to give, I knew I didn’t have to push it any more, and I joined up with Cat and James to plod out the last 10km together through the spectacular Moon Valley at sunset… with lots of very bemused tourists wondering what the hell we were doing!

Today’s rest day will be spent bonding with the amazing people I’ve met along this journey. There seems to be a particularly great group this time and I think we’ll be in for a bit of fun when we hit San Pedro tomorrow!!

Thank you all once again so much for your messages, donations and support. Reading them really is the highlight of every day. I can’t wait to celebrate with you all and thank you properly for getting me through this. And, of course, if you haven’t donated yet and think I’ve earned a dollar or two then all will still be welcome.

Glam-O-Meter: My face looks like it’s been hit with a baseball bat and my nose is bright red thanks to the dry air, cold nights and occasional burst of blubbering. My nails are a disaster, my hair is one big clump, and right now I couldn’t care less…
Bodywatch: Feet, unbelievably, are still blister free. Injury niggles aren’t perfect but not bad enough to be a problem on the last short stretch.
Song of the Day: I See Fire by Ed Sheeran

Love you all
xoxo

Eva and I had our own long day yesterday, luckily we were mostly driving. However we have sorted out our business plans so that we can move here. We're going to become towel girls outside of the ironman shower stalls by the beach! We ran our idea past both the grocery store clerk and the girl in the dive shop, one of them is definitely on board. I think if we hang your medal on the towel table they might be more inclined to stop and talk to us too. On another note I saw a fish do something similar to what that lion did in ngorongoro yesterday. Thought it was necessary to share as only you and Belinda will find that as fabulous as I did. I also feel like this image will help you onto victory on the long day and then I can claim partial responsibility. I love you baby!! Keep running!!

Awesome effort.... I know i'll be sat at my desk for longer than you'll take to smash the next 80kms. Looking forward to you parading the yellow bib around the office. Just wishing you had an internet enabled go-pro so we could join the fun (without the effort) and see what you're seeing. From what it looks like, you aren't seeing many people up in front of you, so that has to make room for the amazing scenery. enjooy :-)

Hi Em. Just back home from Paris to see you scored a blinder again in stage 4. Can't believe that. So amazing, and not even many of the guys touching you. Will be able to look at some of the pictures now but not sure the detail will be good enough to see the salt encrusted lashes. On you go!!!! Love Dad xx

Emily, not sure how many times I will write YOU ROCK on this site but you do.....seriously amazing stuff!! I am now in Rotterdam having had a brief flirtation with Stockholm and the seriously gorgeous personal trainers in the gym at the Grand Hotel. Have no idea how/why but where we stayed had the best hotel I have EVER been in and the HOTTEST PT's - there were actually 4 of them...sadly no pics for you but just imagine CK ads...you get the picture! I made it twice there in 24 hours! LOL!! Hopefully that has made you smile..... Anyway enough of my stories - keep that yellow bib, the fantastic tan streaks that you are famous for, plus the gorgeous smile and you will be winning... PS. Gigi I like the surf shop idea :) Maybe I can teach pilates/yoga on the boards one day!! :D

The tan situation is amazing, possibly even better than the fact that you are still going to be wearing the leader bib in the morning. When we kayak, I might go for the leg stripe or handprint look as well, just to add a bit of flavor. Then we can both go out together with your leader bib. Definitely at the nicest place in HK to see if anyone notices. Eva and I found our future business today. We're opening a surf shop. Given that none of us knows how to surf, we might have to outsource all the work, but u think that's ok. We can focus on our "ironman support" hobby.

So if you are tired, you can chill if you need, we might still be ok. By the way, we ( and that includes you ) are moving here. Not sure why we never thought of that before. Just checked the breaking news and you came first among the ladies again in stage 2!! Mental!! Well done you crazy chick! We just came back from a run (hmm), it is hot here in Kona and we only did a fraction of your distance. We saw so many ironmen and ironwomen training this morning 😍 We walked along the lava beach, watching the sea and the waves. We talked to an ironman coach from Brazil and a guy who is here for his 31st (!) time ironman world championship race (he is so chilled). We are LOVING it here. So lucky to be here this week. I've spent the last couple of days seeing as much of this incredible region as possible while trying to combine it with some altitude acclimatization. A few observations thus far

Hi baby!!!!!! I am so proud of you! I would love you to bits if you were completely dysfunctional, but it's fun to get to show off about someone you love, so keep killing it! I also want you to know that I was not able to spell dysfunction on my own, the spell checker saved me. I am with Eva and we are stalking you happily. Can't wait to see your ranking when they post, it will make it much easier to hit on the ironman athletes in Kona. So not only are you running across a desert with a heavy pack but you are also our spiritual wing woman. Did you ever think you could accomplish so much in one go???? I love you baby! Keep running!

I just did a double-take at my calendar thinking how fast this rolled around!! However that is indeed the case, so it must be time to say hi to my fellow competitors. I'm super excited to be heading to San Pedro in just two weeks' time and meeting you all. I'm arriving 3 days early to do some touristy bits and try to acclimatise to the altitude, so if anyone else is around please do holler.

One more big training weekend to go and then tapering, yikes. I've done about the best I can do prep-wise, given my working hours, but sadly re-introducing the weighted backpack after a great race in Lavaredo has flared up the injury niggles that forced me to walk most of the second half of Iceland. What will be, will be, now… but at least if that happens in Atacama I'll still be able to enjoy the stunning scenery and make friends around the camp fire J

As in my previous races I will be fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in memory of my cousin's beautiful daughter Emma Kingston, who we lost to this cruel disease at just 20 years old before the Iceland race last year. I notice there are a few others running for CF charities this time too, which is fantastic!  https://www.justgiving.com/Emily-Woodland2

See you all very soon
Em

Hi Em, yes..... only 7 days... I'm also very excited. I will arrive in San Pedro on Thursday. So I'll have one day for acclimatisation. Maybe then you can tell me already what you've seen on Wednesday ;-) See you soon Susan
