Atacama Crossing (2013) blog posts from James Boocock

The Long March is done and with it the back of the race is broken. There is the final 10km "dash" back into San Pedro tomorrow. I collapsed on to my sleeping mat at 10.30pm local time last night. Nothing left. All spent. I could hardly pull the strength together to pull out sleeping bag, push a Cliff Bar down my neck and collapse into slumber.

Yesterday started by running across the salt lake that we had been staring out across the previous evening while consuming our latest freeze dried meal. The salt saturated water poured into your shoes. The drying crystals crunched under foot. What lay ahead was what can only be described as an extraordinary final mental and physical challenge for me. It was painful in parts, long in others, but overall simply beautiful.

Hightlights. An hour was spent in the salt flats amongst the infamous ankle breaking dry salt/sand crud. 'Warming up' the ankles for the remaining 65km. The first two checkpoints came and went. Water on board and a pretty light pack I sailed off into the next stage, embracing all the beauty that the dessert had to offer for the day. Through squinted eyes and sweat the dessert still looks amazing and offers a grounding in the challenging times through the day. I felt strong and was ready for the rest.

I found myself on a long hot stretch which was flat and you could see the next 10km rolling out ahead of you. Before the checkpoint the largest climb up a sand dune, like something out of Lawrence of Arabia. I stopped at the last checkpoint for noodles and so glad I did. The night was in bound and before I stepped out into the darkness I wanted to be prepared. 10km was all that lay ahead now of this full on day in the 40oC heat. I just wanted done now. The stars erupted in the sky. The final climb folded out ahead. On blistered feet I moved from a walk, to shuffle to something like a run. I kept looking for anything in the tank to get me through the final stage. Keeping myself moving.

The dessert is at its loneliness in the dark. I managed this in my own head by flicking between concentrating on the stars and moving my mind to my favorite run around Sydney. Anything I could do to take my mind of the discomfort and very sudden the alone feeling.

The greeting party have arrived in Town so I am really excited getting to San Pedro. Time for a bit of reflection today before heading back to civilisation. The reflection will extend some days I sense. Thank you all for your really fantastic support. The comments and jokes remain with me all through the day.

The dessert has been breathtaking. I take my sand encrusted dried hat off to it and all of the competitors. What an incredible experience.

06 March 2013 02:44 am (GMT-04:00) Santiago

I am sitting in the media tent at Camp 4. Lucandandor still keeping one eye on us. This time she looks across the expanse of a vast salt lake. The Andes fills as far as the eye can see.

The hilarious thing is that we are purging salt at such a rate when running in the heat that electrolytes or salt tablets are necessary. However, could have saved myself $10 and sucked my shirt or licked the floor J So concentrated is the salt it looks like dense snowfall in all the vast rolling fields. The track was more level today and in some places monotonous. Sucked it up and hankered down for a long slog across the well named infamous salt flats.

After a shocker of a day yesterday I felt back in the driving seat today. A good night sleep and purging the nausea that had interfered with progress yesterday the day rolled on. REALLY HOT, but was more in control. A lot of shuffling across the salt flats, bit of semi paced running along the jeep track at the end.

I have learnt so much from hanging out with some extraordinarily talented runners this past week. The main thing is and, I know it sounds obvious, but how critical keeping pack weight down is in terms of performing on the day. Now don’t get me wrong, the top 20 will win or lose the race if they get it wrong. From my perspective, I can win a position or two and also come in stronger. Unfortunately Qantas had more of a play in my bag mass than I would have like – my check in luggage from the direct flight to Santiago never made it in time. This small issue has added about 20% to my mandatory equipment since have kindly been leant heavier sleeping bags and other gear. That said, of couse thanks to the very generous folks here better to be running than not..

This afternoon in the shade of the 40oC heat, Kyle one of my tent mates and a real solid runner said to me, for tomorrow’s stage get rid of EVERYTHING you don’t need. Go super light … so you know what I will be up to for the remais of the afternoon J

Tommorrow is the start of the Long March. 75kms across some of the best and most challenging course that Atacama has to offer. I am a little reflective since we are already over the hump of the race distance and the end is already in sight… I will enjoy every remaining moment as I have already simply adored everything about being here with these splendid people in Atacama. Tomorrow, I cant wait, really cant wait!

A really massive thank you for all your emails and blog posts. I cannot tell you how wonderful and such a source of massive support this is to read notes from you all on this little laptop in the middle of the dessert.

Until tomorrow…or the following day…

05 March 2013 03:04 am (GMT-04:00) Santiago

WOW! What a day. We were promised the most challenging one day race of the event today. The camp is in general agreement that it was the endurance stage of the highest order. I planned to hold back a lot today in light of the challenge promised. We ran sand, UP dunes, down dunes, across kms of ‘crud’ sand, soil caked with salt which prevented even the best talent on the course from making pace. Then after our 43oC adventure the day ended spectacularly. After a climb up rock and sand of some two hours you could actually see the camp from the top of the climb. 5km as the crow flies apparently the dude said at the final checkpoint to home…… Well in that time we dropped down dune and canyons, climbing the other side not once but five times! At the highest point of each of the five climbs the camp site appeared within easy reach…Wrong!!Sick but clever… Completely spent and in deficit, I earned my freeze dried spag boll!

Thanks so much for all the messages in blog and email. Lee Nathan I think I feel a team event coming on next year….only joking Paula… Mike, careful of the sharks mate. Ali, sand is in the post ;) Look forward to seeing you all soon!

I survived, just. Unbelievably tough. People dropping like flies in the pecking order. Tune in again tomorrow for more craziness.

Hi James See what we will do to give you and Kyle some sleeping space!! We decided to pull the pin as James was only going downhill with no fluids and food and the temperature was going up and the salt flats waiting. Thinking of you guys, good luck and will be keeping a close eye on proceedings. Thanks for your humor and support around camp. xMegan

I was going to ask why you're going so slow and then saw the winning time of 4:49 for the last stage and think I will refrain. I can (thankfully) only imagine how tough this is (up the side of Primrose Hill a couple of times is as far as I can take the mental torture), but you've done a few miles of training, which is always useful. Well done so far and keep digging in when it gets tough - I have every faith in you, the human dynamo. I'm with you in spirit each day (but maybe not tomorrow night) and sending big love from up North.

04 March 2013 03:04 am (GMT-04:00) Santiago

A day of running through canyons, river runs and the most mind blowing run DOWN a 400m drop down a sand dune! Day started at 5.30am and porridge under the stars with all my running chums. It was the most remarkable start for the 45km stage. The stars are simply amazing. Mnt Lucandor, sitting at over 6000m accompanied us nearly the whole way again, like a God looking down on his work. The desert has not disappointed with its lunar mars like appearance. One was running at times in small groups but for the majority of times I was left to my own thoughts.
My legs were remarkably fresh this morning. The stage continued relatively strong, right up to about 3/4 way through. Just after checkpoint 3, someone said that they found today easier than yesterday. I nodded. And regretted it the whole remaining 10km. I told myself, you run more at lunch times. However, after a brutal run across the most uneven surface that was salt flats, the 43oC combined with the climbs and plunging drops I was done for the day. Still had 6km to go. It may have been more comfortable to drag my whole body and bag back to camp with my finger nails. I had been taking all kinds of advanced electrolyte mixes, drinking water constantly and eating my cliff bars (thank you again Paula!). A final dash to the finish line in front of a massive salt lake where the locals (God knows how local since there is nothing for 100s of miles...?!), were all hanging out. On crossing the finish line I uneasily bagged down and strained to sit. I think I managed to cramp every major muscle group when lying down in our tent...including the neck muscles..... I dont know how Paula can chat so much and not achieve the same effect... ;-)
One of the guys in our tent who managed an astonishing 2hr 50 yesterday and came in 3rd was caught with the full effect of altitude. The last 10km he was on and off bent over, crippled with sickness. Still managed 10th! There is some extrodinary talent out in the field. And they are all just wonderful people.
Another stage is done and I am extremely happy. Tomorrow is likely to be the most difficult stage. I hope to tell you why tomorrow :)

Knowing that I will see Paula and the little Blond Dudes at the finish line is keeping me going!!!! :)
Thanks for tuning in! Please keep in touch!!!!  :)

03 March 2013 03:34 am (GMT-04:00) Santiago

Day 1 and you know what..... i survived! I'd like to say it was a piece of cake, but it wasn't. The so called warm up was really hot. 36oC by lunch time - and it is a really arid heat. Fortunately i was in just after midday. Shoulders hurt, legs held up on predominantly loose rocks and sand course. Cheeky climb after half way which even the pros complaineed about. A few people spat ther dummies at that stage. The top three runners clocked an insane sub 3hr time over the 35km course! The winners of the whole even of shown their cards and it is likely to be exciting down to the wire.

I feel I have adapted to the 10k FT/3k M that we are currenly sitting at, so dont have any excuses there

The backdrop is spectacular! The foothills rise up to meet the cone shaped mountains. The breath taking scenary is a very welcome break from the challenge in front of us all

So to round up, it was tough today...and thats ok. It was an incredibly rewarding experience and a good taste for when the real fun begins, which is apparently about 9am local time tommorw when we jump into a few rivers. No blisters so far, but that will change tomorrow I am sure :-)

40km to look forward to tomorrow and the following day. The long march at 80km is looming, although from a technical perspective the next couple of days are likely to bring more tears to my eyes. Bring it on! The harder the better!

Thanks for your notes Paula John Suzanne, lovely to hear word from home(s). Thinking of you all from my moonscape location.I love you all very much. Yes even you John ;-). Keep it rolling..

P, give the little blond dudes a big hug for me xxxxxxx

It's so great to hear from you! We all miss you dearly but we're also on the countdown (exciting!) - only 2 days of School apparently then we're going to the Desert!! This is what the little Blond Dudes are telling everyone - very funny, their little friends look at them blankly and walk away :) I asked the boys what they would like me to say to you in this note... William says "Jamsie! Don't forget your underpants and I love you!!!" Lachlan says "Cuddle and Love you!". They're (we're) very excited to see you on Saturday but in the meantime want you to focus on the next 6 days ahead and more importantly enjoy! We're sending our love and wishes and follow you on the website as soon as there are updates and pics of your progress. I already have lots of news for you, all of which is GOOD! Run faster Booie! We're all so proud of you!!!! Love you, Love Paula, William & Lachlan xxxx ps John says he loves you too :) pps I told you the red shoes would make you run faster!

02 March 2013 06:49 am (GMT-04:00) Santiago

The convoy has arrived at camp 1. The highest point of the course over 3000m. No apparent symptoms of the altitude so that is a good start.

There is a great sense of team and also apprehension ahead of the start tomorrow. It will be great to get started tomrorrow after all the build up. A little warm up 30k amongst the sand and rocks. It is hot with blue skies and whispy clouds.Likely to be a warm one tomorrow.

Pack is 11kg w/o water which is average for the group. There is some fascination with the largest and more so smallest packs, 16kg to 6kg respectively.

Really looking forward to getting started. REALLY looking forward to it!

01 March 2013 02:35 am (GMT-04:00) Santiago

After a relatively easy flight o Santiago I made it into Chile yesterday....my checked luggage didn't unfortunately. I have most of my running kit with me so if bag does not turn up by Friday I will have to go shopping.... No dramas. Will sort out tomorrow. I am now in San Pedro, north Chile where all competitors are gathering. A wonderful trip over the mountains into a kind of Mars landscape. SP is a beautiful town with a lot of South American charm. A good place to get focused. I have met a few competitors the last couple of days over dinner. All nice people. Same levels of anticipation. I managed a short run today to check legs and general reaction to my new environment and home for coming days. Good news is that body reacted well after travel. I can confirm it is really quite hot and as arid as expected. Time now to trust ones training and to look forward to meeting more people tomorrow. Thanks for all the donations made thus far. I sense a few of you want to see me suffer a bit before you pledge....? :)
