07 March 2013 05:41 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

Well I will try for my third time to update you all on our happenings.
We started Day 4 well behind the eight ball. James (despite being a good Mallee boy, has clearly been softened by his years on the Canadian tundra) started the day with having no fuel at all in the tank. He likely had significant heat stroke, and had been vomiting all night, and was unable to keep any fluids or solids down.
He was so generous that he shared his vomit symphony. followed by a dry wretching encore to those trying to clean their teeth late at night.
He of course rallied and we started the day with the view to taking each checkpoint as it came. We made in into checkpoint one with no a lot of time up our sleeves, and he was not improving. Unfortunately he was also hitched to me, and I have slowed him down with my maternal hips, keeping him exposed for longer that he probably would have on his own.
What we did know from the previous evening, being part of the research group was that his renal function was off, and he was advised to hydrate, and also that he had lost 6kg in two days!!  It was very hot at this stage, and ahead of us was checkpoint two and then 14km of salt flats.  One thing that had been made clear to us at the briefing was do not go onto the salt flats if you are not right as the medical team pretty much can't get to you there.
James had had a little fluid, no other oral intake at this point. We sought some clear advise (that was not really forthcoming) and I think James would have gone on (as he is cowboy tough) to the next checkpoint and reassess then , but I felt the risk was to great - what good is a big sister if she cant boss you around.
Before I left I had told Grace that we would always try to manage the things that we can, and to remain safe.  This is a great adventure, but what is most important and inspirational to us is waiting at home.
Tommy even in his delirious state Dad has been keeping an eye out for the lizards, but we have not seen any snakes. There are a lot of fantastic rocks here, and Dad has carried your special one all the way - and even has collected some for you.
We left the camp with another competitor, Gavin, who is a paediatric intensivist, who I have of course run the medical question by as to whether we made the right call.  I think today we are disappointed, not with the decision as I think there was really no question, but to finish what we have started for ourselves.
So the new question is would we do it again, and all three, including Gavin, feel that is a chapter that needs to be finished.  Whether that is realistic for us I am not sure as we need to consider our family lives. It is a huge commitment to do a race like this.
Whilst back in the hotel we have also met some families of two competitiors still in the race, they were very anxious for any news, and are very stressed waiting for ther husbands/fathers.  I hope seeing us, and again seeing us at breakfast the next day gave them some reassurance that all will be well, but as we are so focused on calories and food weight we forget tat those that love us can be greatly stressed as we have these personal challenges.
I wish all the competitors, both those that will finish and those that have to leave the race, the very best. It is a great challenge, and very tough, for not only those who are able to come in the front of the pack, but also those that spend many many hours out in the elements.  We train for the known, but the challenges are always the unknown (like who has the loudest snoring tents/ camp gastro /personality clashes in tents - although not in wonderful Tent 10)
Anyway, go Tent 10 - remember Tent glory is our shared glory.
And also go the Aussies - they are there toughing it out and doing us proud.
Will I be writing another 4 Deserts blog..........well only time will tell.
xxxxxx

Hey Bro. Just checked in to see how you're tracking and got the update. Dude, I know how much that would be killing you to have to stop but was the right call. You're one tough hombre and I know you would have kept going. I love ya heaps and would much prefer keeping you in good nick for my next snow boarding or your next surfing session. Congratulations to you and Megan (a good sister for looking after you) on an awesome effort! You guys rock! Can't wait to hear all about it. Karl

I don't know you, but my husband is out there. Your blog was very touching and mentioned many things to heart, not only the feeling I have watching you all, but as a family member. Never think you did not succeed. Glad to hear you made the decision you did, as let's face it we only get one body. To me anyone that got to the race is a champion in their own right. All the best and a speedy recovery to all.

Hi Megan, as much as you may feel disappointed there is no failure in a race like this as the experience is one you will have for life... if it haunts you ..you will go back ... my saying is life begins out side your comfort zone... so that you have just experienced...fantastic effort and so much commitment...might see you one day back in Ozz... or better still in an event in the desert... all the best for whatever you choose to do in your life... What a wonderful effort! I know you guys have given it everything and we are so proud of you!!! Your efforts are extra ordinary. To get so far in those conditions. Wow. No wonder there are no snakes there as its too tough. I'm so glad you are safe and resting and ready to come home. We miss you. The kids want yummi food! They have been fantastic! Again we are so proud and will cant wait to see you!!! Enjoy the days remaining and the time together. James is tough and to even set off in those conditions now elevates him to super cowboy tough!!!!! Heaps of love. Sami. Xxxxxx

Well day three is over now - another verylong day for us, especially the last stage. We did the right thing though and stayed with one of our tent mates who was in bad way - he`s now in town having some medicall attention.
We do have many more blisters, but I`m just a bit over it really - whats a few more. We both have a lot of aches and pains, but they do rotate over the body over the course of the day. I haven`t checked my nails yet so at this stage the count is still three down. My new hate is sand , and given that I already hate hills, the combination is a total pain in the rear end (well actually hips)

They say this is the toughest day, hopefully it is but I think mind games may be part of the torture we signed willingly for. James has been great again, pushing me up the hills, but is feeling very average now. He talked a couple of people through the day.

Mary he sends his love to both you and Thomas, but wont email tonight.
Thankyou everyone for your posts, it is such a great feeling to get them and I feel a little teary reading them (Sam you know i get sooky when I`m tired)

we are getting the wind up as the cyber tent will close now
Salt Flats tomorrow - fingers crossed th body holds up and we make cut off times.
Miss everyone xxxxxxx

From your pre-start talk it sounded like Day 3 was the hardest. About 11 hours on the website. The leader was 2.30/4.30/4.30, your listed as 6.30/10.30/11.00 so about the same ratio. So your staying at the same speed. Good job. Did you pack a camera?

04 March 2013 03:11 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

Day two is finally over - it has been a very long day (a few hours longer than we thought). But I hae oficially done my first marahon of oer 44.9 km! The scenery has been amazing, we did 6km of river crossings through canyons at the start of the day, followed by climbing (and I had going up). Although the reward for going up was coming down a massive sandune off the side of the mountain - definately a double black, and we got to run down. We both have had foot problems (I have drilled three nails tonight, so even an expensive pair of Manolo`s would not make them look good), but I think would have been much worse if we had not pre taped. All the river crossings meant our feet were very macerated, despite changing socks and that contributed to the deterioration. I`m very wary of anyone standing near my toes now, and since there are so many rocks here, Grace you can officially say mum has kicked a rock! James has been a great support and even waited at the finish line for me so we could go over together.

James and I have commented a few times that we started off with the Dougie Lay walk, but now we are doing the Kenny Holt walkn (Ken how are you?

As for our tent, Kyle has dropped back to 17th, as he was very unwell out on the course today - couldnt keep anything down for the last 16km. Carla withdrew yesterday as she didnt make the cut off of checkpoint three, and one of the German team members sprained his ankle today through the canyons, so he has also withdrawn. It seems everyone had a tougher day today, the temp was 42C. I wanted to have a moment, but I thiought I should wait for another day.

The body is tired and the hips are not happy with me' they think the are too old. At least the pack is getting lighter as I eat my way through it.

Thankyou Ross and Janice for your posts, its really great to come and read them at the end of the day. Janice I did get your message about dinner annd am looking forward to it.

I hope to be here again letting you know about Day 3 tomorrow, finger crossed the old body hold up.
Missing all, and love to all xxxxxx

03 March 2013 03:26 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

We have finished the first day - I think we were around 6 1/2 hours, but not sure. Pretty sore and nfortunately have a blister on the sole of my foot (had a tiny stone that was wedged inside my shoe liner - knew something was there but was unable to find it after stopping twice. Tomorrow is a longer day, and we start with about 5km of multiple river crossings (pretty amazing since we are in the driest desert). Very hot though, some of the guys in our tent think it is in the mid 40s, but I`m not sure it feels that hot. They are from the northern hemisphere so their thermostat is probably off. I hope I get some sleep tonight, and my old hips cope with the rocky ground. Our tent is good, no real snorers so far - although I might start tonight with all this dust up my nose!
James is great, having a few niggles but the trash talk continues. So much for him having his game face on, he`s Mr Sociable out on the course!!! He might come over to the cybertent to blog, but I dont know if I can drag him away. Mary I`m sorry, but he has been discussing motorbikes a lot!!!!

Kyle, who is in tent 10 with us is currently third place (I think he did it in 3 hours - amazing as there was a long stretch that no one could have run one. We have told him that his glory is our glory. Ole another Tent 10 member is also well placed coming in at 4 hours. Its unbelievable that anyone can get in that quickly given the conditions.
I`m revising my position on temperature - I think they may be right after I have been out in the sun for a while.
Thankyou for the messages they are great to see. Love to my children (Grace you are good for the family jewels, but Rachel you arent looking good!!!)
Hopefully I will be in the same position in 24 hours , and letting you know how day 2 went.

Trash talk James a bit, he is listed as a Canadian..... 6.17 was the time on the website. Still seems good.

02 March 2013 06:47 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

At the start line. This is my first blog in the desert, and it is very barren. At the highest altitude now, feeling OK, slight heqdache but that could be to do with lack of sleep due to the serenade of the San Pedro dogs - it must have been an opera last night.

We are in tent ten, and mix of nationalities. Sam youwill interested to know there is a team from germany sponsored by a Grappa producer.

Everyone here is very excited to get going (even me) and there has been a lot of discussion regarding pack weight - miine is 9.2kg and James has 8.7kg. We are actually very good compared to others, however some of the guys planning to run and compete in the race have 6kg. I am not sure how they even were able to fit the compulsory gear in.

James had to get his patches sewn on his sleeves at last minute, and managed to swindle Babs (a lovely Austraklian lady here with her daughter Pippa) into doiinng it for him. I think the trade might be a slice of pizza that he bought with him for dinner tonight - no point in getting into those dehydrated meals to early.
We will spend the rest of the evening repacking our gear about 100 times - but no doubt will have left something important in it and have to pull it apart by checkpoint three tomorrow.

James annd I have also done the right thing and offered ourselves up for medical research - no probes, just a weight and small blood test and end of day1, 3 and 5.

I hope we have done enough (well I know I havent done enough training, and james has been forced to do cross coutry skiing aas traing due to that moderaate Canadian climate he lives in) not just physicql, but also the preparation with our feet and food etc.

Tomorrow we will finnd out.
Looking forward to updating you tomorrow.

02 March 2013 02:20 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

I just wrote this huge meaningful blog and lost it after the connection failed!!
Anyway lets try again, but sorry might be a little less detailed as I'm keen to get to bed - we will be up early tomorrow to have our equipment and food check. Most of todays conversations have revolved around pack weight, and also calorie count -whether you have to many or to few.  I'll be interested to see my final pack weight tomorrow as it certainly feels heavier than it did before I left and I don't think I've added more!!  I'll be happy to start so I can start eating my food and take weight off my pack.
I don't think I should complain though as there are at least 4 people who still do not have their bags (lost in transit!!) and are scrounging around to make sure they have the required kit.
I have also heard there are also some who have hot arrived, as Calama airport was closed today due to a bomb scare!! Now open so fingers crossed they will be arriving latre tonight or first thing tomorrow.
The buzz meeting the other competitors is fantastic, all with such great life experiences and stories. I hope I make the distance as I wouldn't want to miss out on all the fun.
Feeling good (that self delusion is strong), just a subtle headache, but that could be altitude change, but more likely time zone change. Anyway after the first day I'll have something else to whinge about!
Not sure if we will have access to a computer tomorrow evening (our first in the desert) so the next post may be after the first day.
Grace I'm happy to inform you that last year the had porta potties, so you don't need to worry for your mother any more!
James is well, rearing to go, and of course has reduced his pack size.  he says its a weight thing, I think its so he can look more slick!!

Off at last, after all the preparation and planning . Good walking .love mum

01 March 2013 12:35 pm (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

Well we are finally here. James flew in this morning from Calgary via Dallas - computer problems on his plane meant a very tight connection.  An hour and a half bus ride from Calama through some amazing landscape landed us in San Pedro. This is the driest desert in the world, but recent unusual rains have meant that San Pedro flooded only weeks ago. I'm not sure what that will mean for the race and the course we take.
Have met many other competitors both here, and they all look very fit!!! I'm looking for the normal ones (the ones who haven't been shaved down for wind resistance)
I'm getting more excited rather than nervous, even if I now have to listen to James and his trash talk.  Tomorrow we will check, check and check again our food and compulsory equipment.
San Pedro is a lovely little dusty town (mind you it is the hub for a large portion of Chile's tourist industry as many tours of the region leave here), but very deceptive. We looked into one shop that from outward appearances was a simple clay structure, think old spaghetti western movies - but inside was a very slick and exclusive spa. There is however lots of dogs, but I'm sorry to say Sam I have not seen any chickens yet.
Anyway we are both well and hoping for a good sleep tonight to fight off jet lag.

How is the air up there?

27 February 2013 10:44 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

Well I've arrived in Santiago, and thankfully so have have all my bags.
I've become a bit of a stalker - sizing up anyone who has a backpack and looks relatively fit, wondering if they are heading to San Pedro as well.  In fact I did meet a volunteer at the airport, Ahmed, but he made it very easy with his Racing the Planet top.
I also met Mr Chan, who was in front of me in customs. He unfortunately had a number of food items confiscated (which I think meant they were very easy on me and didn't take a thing) Sorry for Mr Chan, but I think he did me a favour by taking all the heat.
Although I've been out for a walk I have not really seen much of Santiago, it would be a city I would like to spend more time in though. I need to learn some more Spanish - watching Dora the Explorer with the kids has given me a few words though!
James has now boarded his flight in Canada, and I will meet him at the airport tomorrow when we will head straight to Sam Pedro (via Calama).
I'm feeling really excited, but expect to get nervous once I meet the other competitors.

Well 'm finally on my way - very excited but having some moments here and there. Just waiting to board the international flight in Sydney - thinking I should rest, but as all mothers who find themselves finally in control of the remote, I will probably watch a few good movies on the flight.  Have all things packed, a lot with me and praying the rest of my bag doesn't go to Helsinki while I go to Santiago (go Qantas - you can do it!)
My kids are sick of me reminding them to post (when I said goodbye this morning whilst they were still dozing) I did the subliminal whispering "Blog, blog, blog"
My mother has given me the compass that my grandfather used over 100 years ago in the Northern Territory of Australia to carry through the race as part of our mandatory equipment, I think that will bring luck to both James and I.  I think he would have traveled many more miles than what we are doing (maybe not all on foot), and he certainly would not have been as geared up as we are.
Anyway call for boarding now, so see you on the other side x

How cool re the compass, I can only imagine the adventures he had with that! Safe travels.

13 February 2013 12:06 pm (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

I thought I'd add a picture to the blog - it has been a lot of fun trying to find a picture (and taking me away from my much needed training -no tapering for those who haven't peaked).
I've also been distracting myself from physical training by sorting an upbeat playlist.
I decided on this as I'm pretty sure this pose will reflect how I am feeling on a good day!  I did think about putting one up with me surrounded by a number of wine glasses - what do you think?  It will also amuse my children who have been reminded every day that they will need to post comments for me to read each night.
Anyway the clock is ticking for our Chile adventure.
Cheers

Hi Sandy You are right, it is Kokoda. I have taken a keen interest in your (and your husbands) blogs over the recent years, and virtually memorised your recommended pack list when it appeared on the website. Thankyou for your well wishes - I'm a little worried now that my training has been insufficient - congratulations on your result last year by the way. Thanks Megan

Hi Megan love the pic were is it taken... At first I thought it might be on the Kokoda track ...great experience I have hiked it twice now and it is a very special journey. Not long and all your training will turn to packing and you will be in San Pedro Atacama a gorgeous place... ... all the best Sandy

06 February 2013 01:53 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

I continue to impress myself (even if no one else notices) after a 0530 start for the dreaded Bikram Yoga.
Tomorrow I will be heading to Tri alliance Sports Altitude Training to try and get some acclimatisation (I hope). GIven that I live at 60m above sea level I am hoping this will provide some benefits (I need all the help I can get at this stage!!)
Has anyone else tried this? I would love to hear how it has gone.
Cheers

Hi Megan, I have done varies blocks of altitude training for different events but did it before Atacama last year and yes it helped I had no trouble with the altitude only felt it when I first arrived in San Pedro Atacama then never worried me after that. I live in Melbourne too so I know you leave soon but if I can help in anyway let me know. This was one of my favourite races the scenery was awesome enjoy I wish I was going too... Sandy

Hey there. Yes, I've been going for a couple of months now and can certainly feel the benefits each time I go back there (feel stronger each time). I was told by a prior competitor it made a real difference out on the race between the people who did altitude training prior to the start. This will be my first 4D race and getting very excited (read nervous, see you there in 3 weeks! PS - Good work on the bikram, I should have thought of that although it has been pretty hot in Sydney so hoping that has helped! Cheers Pete

04 February 2013 08:42 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

I've started Bikram Yoga in an attempt to get used to the heat (even though it is summer here) -unbelievable, the sweat is dripping off before the first breathing exercises are done.  Anyway looking at the blogs of those who have gone before, it seems like a good idea.
There is also the benefit of training for the tent aroma, after a few days of no showers.
Anyway, I should be out on a run/walk now but, like all good mothers of primary age children, I'm off to check my itchy son for lice!!!
Love reading the other blogs, gives me hoe when I realise other people are just as excited/scared as I am.
Cheers

Hahaha, that's a bit of a worry that people in your yoga class are smelling like they haven't washed for 7 days after an hour of yoga!

31 January 2013 02:37 am (GMT+10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

Well this is officially my first ever blog - just to match my first ever 4 Deserts.
I excited, but starting to get nervous - only 27 days until I leave Melbourne.
Do you think I can get fit in that time??
My family (especially the teenagers) are keen for me to get on the plane,  it means they will no longer have to hear about gear weight and calorie count.
Looking forward to meeting my brother James in Santiago, he's coming from Canada (and the cold).  Not looking forward to the trash talk I'll get from him if I cant keep up!!!
Were hoping to raise money for Ankylosing Spondylosis - an type of arthritis that commonly occours in young people, and affects more men than women. Two of my brothers are affected by the condition.
see our Facebook page www.facebook.com/RaceTheAche

Have done all the preventative research - podiatry, physiotherapy, nutrition advice - hoping it will all make a difference on the day
Cheers, Megan
