Hi All,

After a shocking night of no sleep and 5 toilet breaks (this means getting up off tent floor and tip toeing over the heads of my tent mates) woke up to another beautiful day in the desert.  Gav and Col looking far too limber so we agree to run together and maintain a decent pace (8km) to the finish line.  We bring Sir David Cox, one of tent buddies with us (he needs to maintain his position in the field and is happy for the company) and set off this time slightly later (10.00am) after an emotional goodbye to our last camp in the desert. 1st 100m is great comedy value as Gav and Col ease some blood into their toes but after that pace pick up and we cover the first 5k down a slight hill towards San Pedro in good style.  Chasing down a Japanese lad in what looks like a Father Christmas outfit and the youngest competitor in the field (a lad called Alex from Gloucester who is only 19) all the way to the line.  Big Gav controls the pace and i whinge a lot as we wind it up through the streets of San Pedro which get busier and busier as we head in towards the finish line.  One last whinge from me about the strength of the pace and we put in a final burst towards the packed finish line in the local square.  A medal each, pizza, beer, a band and the world seems a different place.  Lots of grown men with tears in the eyes.....at last we've done it!!!!

Writing this with a post hangover stinger at the airport in Calama after a great night out in San Pedro.  Awards, food, wine, beer boat racing, dancing, crying, laughing and arm wrestling all on the achievements list of the evening.  One night in Santiago and then home.........

Thank you for your love, support and comments - i needed it!

Sleep deprivation and toilet troubles are well known for diminishing the killer instinct so it's perhaps no surprise that you turned warm and cuddly towards your team mates. Bravo ! You are all stars and truly inspirational. We have thoroughly enjoyed sharing your journey. Have a safe trip. It's minus 2 degrees and snowing heavily here ! PanJo

Well folks we've cracked it but it is fair to say that Team Castle Triathlon are in bits - Gav (feet, back), Colin (feet and shin), Me (lip burnt and slight shin). All agreed that it was the hardest thing we have done particulalry on the back of the previous 4 days....

So the course.....we had gone no more than about 200m and we were up to our ankles in salty lake water so that we could produce the photo you can see on the website!! All very well but not when you have got 75.8km to go!! Next 10k back across the salt pans - stumble trip, stumble trip.....This bit made easier by some good banter with a group of 4 lads from Durban. Salt and electrolyte mix now seems right and generally feeling a lot better than i had on the previous 4 days. Gav had a slow start and spent all 76k with his blisters and his IPOD! Next 10k track but not easy track as had sand on it - Christ i hate sand and then got to CP3 to be offered a Sprite!!! Day was gettng bettter. 3 to 4 was a v hot stretch on loose sand/ gravel and then ended with a 1km walk up a massive dune - required a big effort but we dragged are sorry backsides up there tobe rewarded with a stunning moonscape view before dropping down to CP4 . 40K done but Col,s feet not looking too walk happy and managed to video him doing a comedy walk as we set off to CP5. Bit low on food and electrolyte to eat/ drink on the walk but we made it through to a very windy CP5 where we could get hot water and tuck into a Frieze - dried! Had about 40 minutes rest and were about to go when Big G arrived looking a bit sorry for himself - awesome effort given the state of his feet...18K to go......come on......easy terrain but very weary - teamed up with a Thai lad and a Mexican and yomped in to a rousing wlecome at the finish line at just before 11pm - 14hours and 55 mins from starting. Had a kiss and a cry with Colin in truly Gallic style and then waited up for half an hour for Gav to limp his sorry carcass across the finish line....

Moral dilemma.....Col and Gav,s feet are in bits.....do i try and gain the few minutes tomorrow morning to overhaul them on the leaderboard????

Awesome ! We're very proud of you El Capitaine. Now - 'friendhip' ... companionship, camaraderie, comradeship, support. So .... you've done all that in the past five days, and you can do it again AFTER you've beaten the whatsits out of them on the final 8k. Listen to the kids mate - at this point it's about winning, not taking part. Once you get to the first point after crossing the finish line victorious, you can do all that cuddly stuff. In the meantime, go stuff 'em :-) Good luck. Team PanJo

Ditch 'em Brian. They've got you through 240k but that doesn't matter now. Forget the friendship, it's winning that counts! Give 'em a kick in the shins at the start! Gez

06 March 2013 02:45 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Not right in the head from the start and mind monkey playing overtime - very dark thoughts about getting to CP2 and just collapsing....had a quiet word with myself and with a bit of help from Monsieur Childs made it out onto the salt flats and things seemed to bizarrely improve!! Possibly the hottest couple of hours of the trip and then the magic yellow finish line with our new friend Sanjo from Thailand......now sat by a salt lake in Camp 4 feeling rather pleased with ourselves. Gav strong again after a rocky start. Colin legendry throughout but his feet are taking the toll!! Ouch!!!! One more day of hard slog - 72km - and then a rest day before tea and medals. All planning a huge session in San Pedro but know that we will all be tucked up in bed by 8.00pm Sat.... May not make the blog cut offtime tomorrow but will update on Friday.

Not really sure what to write now as everything seems a bit weak compared to what you have been doing. Your near 15 hour day must have been a real test of endurance on every level. We are totally in awe here in the Forbes household. A truly outstanding effort. Just one more stage to go. We're in no doubt that you can do it. Keep smiling.

Sorry abt lack of comms but felt awful after stage 2 as I took no salt all day and the reality is I need tobe banging those little capsules every hourout on the course. Day 2 was a tale of 2 halfs – 1st part stunning scenery including a gorge full of water that we ran down and a huge dune that we had to career down at great speed, youwould be able to do it on your snowboards kids – 2nd part was hotand dusty and salt cruddy and dusty and hot – big gav had early doors shocker but came steaming up behind us with about 5 k to go and then just kept going. Lost a few places but rapidly realizing this is more of a survival exercise. Had massive cramps when got across finish lineandhad toget somesalt down me quickly – took about 2 hours before I could take my socks off without cramping up….lesson for today…

Day 3 – billed as the toughest day on the course. 1st 20k across crudd/ salt pans/ dunes – fairly horrendous under foot at times – next 10k on sandy tracks – last 12k probably the hardest of my life – absolutely hanging out when got to finish line. Gavstrong again –col and I stuck together throughout. Boys in good form although few blisters flying around….day 4 tomorrow – lets hope it is easier than today…….

Hopefully catch up tomorrow……can this get any harder……

Well done boys! I saw a video of you, Brian and Colin, leisurely walking through a gorge the other day, I guess that was the better half of day2 before the cramps. Well done Brian, you've had the wake-up slap on day 2 - just as I did, remember? Get those little salt tabs down you regular as clockwork and you'll be fine. Day4 you should be picking up that pack feeling it get lighter and more comfortable :) It sounds like a really amazing race and I think I'm already there for next year :)) I hope the food plan is working well and that you are keeping up with the video diary too? Looking forward to that. Remember that what you eat today will be fuel for tomorrow. Day 5 you will wake up stronger and fitter and just cruise through the field with a smile on your face. Have a great day out there - wish I was out there with you boys!

03 March 2013 03:49 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Day 1 tick. Made it to base camp last night at around 5 and made my first schoolboy error of being too helpful getting luggage off our bus. Net result was that I got the spot next to the opening in our 10 man tent – drafty and also prone to being stood on in the middle of the night!!!! MUCH REPACKING OF KIT AND HEATING of our first freeze dried meals later we all settled down to bed when the lights went out – the sun went down. Forgot to mention that we were in a stunning valley with a huge rock feature in the middle of it with the start line set up in the middle of a dry river/ lake. Lots of photos at the startline and everyone generally a bit nervous/ excite before the off – to be honest I just wanted to get on with it so that we can settle into a bit of a routine and stop talking about weights of packs/nutrition plans etc

Sunday morning – race day at last. Got woken up by colin telling me it was 6.30am so I sprang out of bed, very rocky one, and ran over to the fire to make sure I didn’t have to wait in a big queue for hot water only to find out that the time was actually 5.30am. managed to fill the next 2 hours with more kit packing and necessary cream/ Vaseline application. 7.30 race briefing given by a very posh chap called alastair, timing cards stamped, 3, 2, 1 we were off. Lots of adrenaline and enthusiasm saw a sprint start with our very own colin childs almost completing a 5 min mile and leading the field – slow down col…..first 7k was the highest part of the whole course at around 3300m. ALL GOING WAY TOO FAST …. Temp starts to climb as the sun comes up and we all settle down into our race pace – col has disappeared over the horizon chasing the leaders and I manage to keep in touch with gav who is going like a train. Four hours later, we all finish within about 20 mins of each other and a good hour behind the leaders. Good test of kit and nutrition/ hydration plan – all agree that we will take it a bit easier at the start tomorrow. All in good shape although col has a few blisters and gav has 1. In camp now and everyone chilled. Heard that it was 45c in death canyon today, a 7k uphill shocker, all looking forward with a little trepidation to tomorrow – 44k and a few river crossings. Bring it on.

Well done Brian. 7 hrs on your feet must be tough, you looked strong on video yesterday. Keep at it. And don't forget to checkout the sky at night, apparently you have exceptionally clear skies. Checkout Jupiter, you may be able to see a couple of moons with naked eye. Also, look out for ISS, it would be exceptionally bright and will pass over the whole sky in a 5 min window. i'm sure there's a couple of astronomy geeks who will have worked out when it passess over. The sprint start sounds familiar but glad that day one is in the bank with everything in tact and all systems working well. 3 things to look after:- Feet, Hydration and food. It's great isn't it? Well folks this is it.  Had the competitor briefing this morning and looking forward to letting the check points know that Gav and Colin and acting slightly strangely out on the course.  We are about to go off to get our bags checked to make sure we have all the mandatory items in our kit, then we get weighed and have a blood test (all in the name of science)!!  A packed lunch, then loaded onto 8 buses like cattle and taken off into the desert to Camp 1.  The Blog tent will be open but may be all a bit too manic so first impressions of the real desert may have to wait until after the first stage tomorrow.  We have met most of camp buddies already and everyone is in fine form although Col was up with the runs last night.  Will be sad to say goodbye to our lovely little hotel the Antiplanico and its pool but we will be back in 7 days almost to the hour (assuming all goes to plan).  Still not ditched any food but decided that the silk liner (for additional warmth around my sleeping bag) has to go...briefly found myself shaving off straps on my rucksack that are surplus to requirement.....have got over that now.  Talking of shaving about to go and shave off my beard now.  See you tomorrow.

So here we are folks.  Safely resident in our hotel in the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama.  Not a cloud in the sky and the temp steadily climbing to a predicted daytime high of 35C.  To be honest it is nice to be warm again after a freezing British winter of endless crap weather.  So all the chat is predictably about weight in the back pack and the reduction thereof.  Don't worry Panjo i am resisting the temptation to ditch any food at the moment!!!  Roll mat or no roll mat/ Warm down jacket for the evenings or lightweight locally bought poncho that can be ditched on route - these are the things that are consuming our waking moments.  If i am honest, and i am sure this view is shared by at least a few of my fellow nutty competitors, life has become simple again for the first time in a long time.  Today and tomorrow are all about getting to the start line on Sunday morning with the right kit, the right amount of calories in me and the right amount of fluid - anything else is a bonus.
Race is refreshingly multi-national - sat here at breakfast with Aussies/ Kiwis/ Japanese/ Frenchman and a Canadien.  Everyone upbeat but a little nervous about what the next few days is going to serve up.  Bring on the Slat Flats.....
Cazzie - beard is coming off today - my equivalent of shaving legs.
