Mate, feel quite emotional actually reading you and Gozza's blogs... Was talking last night with cowley about it and it really is amazing stuff you're doing. Full of admiration for you both. One favour, please do the sax across the finish line, it needs a special finish! The wheels really will fall off when you take on a few beers! I should also thank you because all this lot doing the bath half can't really get away with saying how impressive their run is... Walk in the park compared to yours x

07 March 2012 07:10 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

Stage 4 done, in the bag.  Tough day, stage 1 went well and was placed around 70th, being a competitive idiot i decided to pretty much skip check point 1 and stop so I could gain 10 places. ten minutes later i was pretty much in tears as my shoes were full of sand, absolute agony with every step.  Gozza then caught me up thankfully as i was losing the plot and on the verge of throwing in the towel. Unfotunately our very own Mo Farah has picked up a foot injury and is limping along.  We made it to check point two and re dressed our feet beofre taking on 14km of salt flats.  It took us a while with the injuries and terrain but we made it to check point 3.  the final stage was only 3.5km and we literally lost the plot.  A bit too much sun resulted in us belting out `Jerusalem` (in fine voice i might add), the Turkish man infront of us could not believe what he was seeing.  We then pretended we were seb coe and roger bannister in our approach to the finish line and over took him 200 metres from the finish.  Getting caught up in the moment I turned round and gave him the wave good bye.  He then literally sprinted his heart out in pursuit.  Thank fully we managed to beat him by a metre but we almost had egg on our faces.

The Ipod served me well today, `you`ll never walk alone` was an inspiration on the salt flats.

There will be no blog tomorrow, we have a 75km day ahead of us.  you can split it over two days but if we get through it tomorrow we get friday off so we are planning to go through the night, should take between 16 and 24 hours.  Once that is complete we will basically be there as on the last day it is 11km and if i am at the start point i will crawl if i have too.  Big rest now for tomorrow, it will be hell, the foot is still absolute agony, the painkillers dont really help that much but we have come this far so might as well get the job done.

Thanks for all the support, i havnt got your comments to blog 3 apart from Gooses as i am not sure what time they are downloaded.  cant wait to read them on the day off if all goes to plan.

Cheers,

Stu

Dad - did you get my email as well? i havnt received a reply so may be a problem at this end.

Mum - one of our new american friends is talking us into another race, will get this one out of the way first before deciding.

Jess - MVP again? this is getting ridiculous, did you win? xxx

All the Arseal fans - so close, Pedro misses another excellent evenings' entertainment at the Emirates.

Rick Noblin - get down the range, we are due a hit when i am back.

Willis - that is so weird, we were doing the bussey side step on stage 3 today, honestky we actually were.

Liz - cant wait for it!

As Martin Tyler said about Rooney's goal against City "it defies description" well, what you have achieved defies description. I am full of admiration for you. The end is very much in sight player. Stand tall, play straight, bat long. Levi

Just seen the results for stage 5 - you totally stormed it.

Posted On: 09 Mar 2012 04:38 pm

Hey Stui, this tortuous week ( for me and not least you) is almost over and as I finally read your blogs the results for stage 5 have been posted - been checking all day! My self-imposed state of ignorance about the finer details of your epic adventure is at an end, although I did hear murmering about trench foot when we went to the emirates Tuesday. Ignorance is bliss but Dad has been bursting to tell me the details all week - I am now totally in the loop! I am so proud of what you have achieved in doing this mad thing. Good luck for the final stage; it should be a walk in the park compared to what you have been through. Phone when you get back to civilisation. Big hugs

Echo everyones comments on here about how amazing you are doing, hopefully you are reading this with only 11km's to go. That is about as far as the Ox ran in half an hour on Wednesday night he was immense. It made me put in a 90 minute shift of being an Arsenal fan. Get a bit of Liberame going that will really confuse the Turkish man. GO ON PED

Not been able to settle to anything thinking of you yesterday. I'm writing this assuming you have nailed stage 5. I'm pretty sure I speak for most of us stu when I say that what we're feeling for you right now extends way beyond pride and admiration into something that can't be put into words. Kate used the perfect word - IMMENSE. What is so wonderful for us (your family) is that is its clear that so many others feel the same way. So thank you to everyone for all your words of support for stu and fred - they have overwhelmed (and amused) me at times this week. Feeling very emotional so will now try and lighten the mood! ...........You should be reading this with only 11km to go!! Christ boys that's like nipping to the corner shop for a pint of milk after everything you've been through! HAVE IT! Can't wait to see you. Give it some boys -one more time and it's yours xxxxx

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 07:59 pm

Stuart, I'm so pleased with the progress you are making. Want to let you know that we have agreed a deal to sign Germany striker Lukas Podolski from Cologne. He will cost us about £10.9m and we'll pay him around £100,000 a week. Lucas will have to pass a medical and agree personal terms before the move can be completed in the summer. Per told me "He has sent me a number of text messages and I have told him this is a great place to work and Arsenal are an amazing club." Should be good for us up front. Will keep you informed of any other news. Au revoir, Arsene (CBRD)

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 12:45 pm

Stuart, Harzit? Keep going mate. Simon says to "stop complaining". Arsenal - Before i go into detail about one of the best nights i have ever had at the emirates we have just signed Podolski. Apparently Per has been texting him constantly and its finally paid off.. Good for something then. 10.9 million. Tuesday - The night that so nearly was. Haven't seen us play as well as we did fist half for years. The atmosphere was amazing, so loud. Even Rick Riley was giving it some. To start tom rosicky was unreal. Arsene dispatched him through the middle and he embarrassed Van Bommell for most of the evening. He really was so good mate. Theo actually put in a shift and The ox was again unstoppable. The whole team was amazing. Covered in goosebumps as they were clapped off at half time. Just couldn't find the last goal seceond half. and when you bring on Park and return of che-mack to change the game, it did slightly dissolve. Really proud though. Only complaints: - The ref was shocking - Had a nightmare evening - Van Bommell and zlatan are cheating c*nts.. was actually a shame to see such established names in football behave in that way - Kieran Gibbs - Was out of his depth trying to mark Robinhio. He's only young though.. We'll let him off. AVB has been sacked as well, don't know if you knew? Pretty cheap couple of years for the 2003&anythingafter AFC. Idiots. Also Arshavin has gone back to Zenit on loan, don't know if you knew? Donlt know why we didn't sell him.. Better without him. In the ox we trust. Keep us updated though mate. See you on Monday for a drink before the game? The che pub? Will be an honour to see you fall off the wagon.

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 12:41 pm

STU - WELL DONE!! you and gozza are such troopers we all think you're amazing. thinking of you both KEEP GOING!! xxx

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 12:39 pm

Styyarrt, good news... Podolski has signed to wear the red and white next season, that shot off the press. Heroic in defeat on Tuesday, Rosicky was epic, and the Ox sensational. shame we only had Chamakh and Park to come on for the last 20!!! killed us. News from the Willis remuneration team which i know you like to keep abreast of. considering appealing for more!!! "Not you again"... Get through it mate, you're fdoing a superb job and i'm reading all the blogs. Me, Rue, Leather and Riley are meeting tonight at Maida vale studios to record you an uplifting accapella rendition of Mumfords dustbowl dance to spur you on - very apt. Ciao for now boyo... (you're looking awfully fit)

Stu you are crazy, cant believe you and Goz are doing this. Its obviously the Great Houghton spirit which is driving you on. Keep it going and before you know it you will be done!

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 09:55 am

COME ON YOU MIGHTY BEAST! These blogs are making my days skipper...Szczesny has come out and said that his hatred of Spu*rs is what drives him on (he was immense against liverpool) and Mancini has told the press he wants RVP. Messi scored 5 last night (CL Record) and Kate Humble is leaving Springwatch after 7 successful years. Come on my son - get accross that finish line...

Glad to hear you have plenty of currency on the food exchange - talking of which - what was for tea tonight?? Keep going bud and good luck for the BIG day tomorrow, i'm sure you and Fred will help each other through. All our love Stu, T&J xx

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 06:30 am

Hey stu, for some reason your stage 3 blog only came through today so we've had double bubble this morming. So glad u are still in good spirits and that you and Fred are taking care of each other. Believe me when I tell you that you are constantly in our thoughts. Good to see you have regained a few spots in the rankings but as you yourself have said its kind of irrelevant - finishing is what it's all about. Good luck for the "long march" (I've been reading up). The thought of it must make you want to, you know, shite yourself (bridges). Keep your pecker up. Love ya xxx

06 March 2012 07:26 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

The good news is stage 3 is complete, the bad news is i did it all with what feels like a broken big toe.  the doctor tells me it`s a tendon or joint problem where the toe meets the foot, it`s a bit like someone hitting your toe with a hammer every step.  I spent a good half an hour at one of the checkpoints today though and it is covered in quite a bit of tape which has helped so will do the same tomorrow.  today was possibly the hardest thing i have ever done, not even tina turner singing `steamy windows` on the ipod could get me motivated, david gray then came on, and that was the sign i needed to turn off the ipod, so back in the bag it went.

despite the injury i was making good time and then it got extra hot, a few people pulled out according to the whispers around camp.  myself and an ex US marine set off together just with the aim to finish.  20 minutes in he took a turn for the worse and was being sick so it took us about 3 and a half hours to complete the last section and now we are back in the camp.  he`s got his feet up and looking forward to tomorrow.  thanks to that today took about 8 and a half hours, and i have dropped down the pecking order, but to be honest i don`t care, just want to finish and get the toe fixed.

just need to get tomorrow out of the way and then it`s the long day.  Gozza has picked up a niggle so we may be plodding on together for the rest of the campaign.  Elsewhere, the food markets are really starting to trade around camp.  it is a sellers market, one energy gel can be exchanged for a chocolate bar and a freeze dried meal, lets hope the FSA dont catch on, i`m gelled up to my nuts.

Thanks again for all your comments, they really do help, one guy nearly pulled out last night but read his comments from friends and family and decided to stay in.  he is still out on the course now 10 hours after we started so they really do have a positive effect.

Chicken Korma tonight - spag bol for breakfast was disgusting.

see below:

Family - thanks for all the support, auntie kate i cant believe nobody offered their seat for you, then again i suppose you were on a midland mainline service.

auntie ruth - fankyou (bridges)

Jess/ Dad- have you received my emails not sure if they go through?

Christian/Riley - harzit?

Chadd/Goose - how was the dinner party?

Cliff/Butt/Madley - good luck in the bath half at the weekend, clif is the injury ok?

Dad/Riley/Rick - Match report please

Mum - have you read any of the blogs yet?

Dad/riley/rick/armour - diaby wouldnt make it to the first checkpoint on stage 1

05 March 2012 06:25 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

Well, after the shock of yesterday i have got my head around the fact that it is going to be a tough week, so am back to my usual self.  Today was (as described at breakfast by the aussies) a little ripper in preparation for tomorrow.  Pedro and Gozza stormed off keen to put some daylight between them and the leader in the club house, this lasted about 30 metres and normal service resumed.  Gozza has really taken this on so far and was positioned around 30th yesterday.  he has dropped back a bit today to the 40`s but i have every confidence he will resume normal service tomorrow.  I have climbed 6 places today to 79th although I think I will be giving them back early doors tomorrow.  everyone has said they have found today tough and tomorrow is meant to seperate the wheat from the chaffe (running pun for those not in the know).  Salt flats await us I am told but am hoping to get these out of the way early on  when it is cooler, as soon as it strikes 11 it is a different ball game all together with the heat.

I think (hope) that once tomorrow is out of the way I can tackle day four and from then on, despite 70 odd km on day 5 i will be in a good place mentally.

The scenery is awesome and is worth the pain, today we did a few river crossings and i nearly came a cropper taking on an action snap.  The highlight was running down a sand dune of about 500 feet (imagine an easy red run on the ski slopes), full throttle hurtling passed a belgian and a frenchman, only to be pipped by a korean at the bottom.

the only negative and thing on my mind is my feet.  the river crossing has had it`s way with me as i now have the start of what is known as `trench foot`.  have a look on google if your interested. i am going to get them taped up like no tomorrow and have a change of sock for tomorrow.  should all be fine, it comes with the challenge.  for any budding trail/ultra runners out there, dont buy the rough country gaiters, they are terrible and have already broken. A bit of DIY on those later after some chicken tikka masala, forgot my poppadoms unfortunately.

That`s it for today really, thank you so much for all your comments they really are something to look forward to and good motivation to get the run done.   have met some really good people, some are a few sandwiches short but there you go.

i should go away more often, this weekends sport has been unbelievable, what are the fixtures this weekend?

Cheers,

Stu

4 deserts? You must have been gutted to arrive and discover this was not as you had imagined - 4 desserts ( a trifling matter). shame about the saints at the weekend nevermind still on for top 4 finish. As for the economy, crude oil hits a record high at $100 a barrel, coincidently as did the Mazda fill up. Nonetheless the FTSE rises 25 points at close of play. Well done mate, keep going very proud of you sport. Mum sends her best, she's just bought a new pair of running shoes. JT and the fam.

The first thing I do when I get up is look at your blog and so missed it this morning. Keep up the hard work,we know you can do it. You will laughing about it all next week (or sleeping). Ruth is halucinating about gin bottles already.Stay positive.Thinking of you lots. Love Grandma & Grandad

Posted On: 07 Mar 2012 05:37 pm

Quality effort Stu. My morning routine has changed this week to: get up half an hour earlier to take the dog out then come home and sit down with a cuppa and breakfast to read your blog, look at photos and check your time/position before getting ready for work. Its quite addictive actually. I had a grim PT session at the gym today and was feeling a bit precious cos it hurt! Then I thought of you and decided it was time to man up. It still bloody hurt but I did it with good grace! Might allow myself a little peek at the gin bottle tonight. Just a peek mind. xxx Keep going bud you're a legend.

Posted On: 07 Mar 2012 04:14 pm

My goodness the Arsenal came close Pedro! What heroics! A bit like yours dragging a marine over the finish line! Im imagining you in the middle of a desert war zone..bombs exploding everywhere and your charging on with an injured marine on your back and a bullet through your right buttock, God your strong! So brilliant what you were both doing. Its not about getting in first in front of everyone it is the participation AND encouraging others just as you are doing. The end is in sight. The beers will be in the chiller. All of us and your great Charity are watching closely. Keep the Faith, kits all in the mind.

So sorry to hear about the 'trench foot'. Make sure those medics take good care of you. Amazing to hear about the scenery and your positive attitude to the whole run. Everyone at BLESMA is thinking of you both and are very proud and thankful to how hard you are working. Keep it up - and keep the thought of that finishing line fresh in your mind!

Arsenal 3 AC Milan 0, close but yet so far. 3 nil up at half time through Koscielny (header from corner)Rosccky (side foot) and RVP penalty after the Ox was fouled. Second half Milan attacked and although RVP missed a good chance they held on, the atmosphere and support was truly amazing, hoping you are doing well and remaining positive. Dad xx

Took the Fireblade out for a burn down the Leicester Mile yesterday,it really put things in perspective of what you are achieving. Anyway, off to the Cross Keys with Gainey and the lads. Peters... Roblin here. Hope you're keeping the spirits up and thought maybe a little message might help with that. About to sit down and watch the might arsenal complete an even bigger challenge than the Atacama by beating AC 5-0 (cowleys put a tenner on it so its bound to come in!). The ox, walcott, gervinho, and Van P all starting tonight. he says he'll split the winnings between his Rioja fund and your charity so fingers crossed. Played 18 with Pez and Tom Allen at the springs yesterday in gale force winds. Went poorly! Looking forward to seeing you, and to getting round with you and baseball bat! all the best lads. As you were x

Your six place climb up the table, surely that represents the six points arsenal have made up on Spurs in the last week. Keep on pushing and so will Arsenal! Good luck mate

Posted On: 06 Mar 2012 11:33 am

Stuart, Sounds like you are getting through it. Keep on going Sir! Off to the Emirates this evening to witness the biggest upset in champions league history. Injury news: Yossi Benayoun (virus) and Tomas Rosicky (groin) both face late fitness tests ahead of the game. While Kieran Gibbs (groin/calf) is also a doubt. Abou Diaby (hamstring) is out(played for 30 mins on sunday) and Mikel Arteta suffered concussion, so is also out. So added to the 4-0 aggregate, sqauad preparation hasn't been ideal. I am upbeat however, Meeting Rick (Riley)in the Coronet at 6.15, should bring us the luck we need. Harzit. x

04 March 2012 07:37 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

Stage 1 is complete in just under 5 hours and the whole thing is far harder than I ever thought it would be.  After only 4 hours sleep thanks to the snoring swiss man in my tent I was ready to go.   The first hour is not too bad as the sun isnt actually fully risen.  After that though, it is nothing short of horrendous.  Last night we were talking about signing up for another one next year.  I will not be doing so.

The terrain  is pretty tough and uneven, and the altitude is quite tough to cope with.  However, we have run to the highest point of the race I am told so it is all down hill from here on, with the odd steep climb thrown in.  I am currently in about 80 somethingth position but to be honest I dont care where I finish, just as long as I do finish.

despite the somewhat negative tone of the above it is absolutely amazing and i am reallly glad to be doing the race, some of the runners are absolute nutters, others are just similar to me and looking to finish.

I am off to bandage my feet now for tomorrow as i already have one horrendous blister on my little toe.  Off for a chinese later as tonights ration pack meal is sweet and sour chicken.

I think once tomorrow is out of the way I will be OK and get through the next couple, it is just so much harder than I ever thought it would be.

Few questions for anyone who is reading.  How did the mufflers get on?  did united beat spurs? did the saints win?

hope everyone is ok and enjoying their sunday, have fun in the office tomorrow.

Cheers,

Stu

Stu, Day one is the hardest as you're not sure what to expect - see how you feel tomorrow, hopefully not too down! Keep putting one foot in front of the other and you'll do great. Keep up the good work pal Sam

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 06:17 pm

You are doing brilliantly - you will be so pleased to achieve it once completed!! great Saracens game - we missed you. Look after those feet - they are the only ones you have!! xxxx

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 05:19 pm

Pedders, muffler game was cancelled due to lack of players - Goose has re-arranged though (albeit he's replied to every one of my emails today apart from the one asking if he managed to book in another date......so we hope he's done it). Strong effort on the run mate and keep it going!

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 05:04 pm

Great job Stu. I too am stalwart in my commitment to the cause - spent Saturday night in The Ivy and didn't touch a drop!! Looking forward to our dinner there when you get back. Keep going - thinking about you constantly not least yesterday as I walked the dog in the bloody freezing rain! Love ya loads xxx

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 04:14 pm

So amazing! love you have managed to find chinese rations!! Good luck with the next stages! x

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 01:13 pm

Stuart, So far sounds very similar to a few of the challenges presented by the Brighton Half. Keep going mate! With regards to Robin Van Persie, once again he came up with the goods. After a testing first half where the young pole in goal got us out of a few spots of bother, RVP buried a goal very similar to his affort against Everton from another Alex Song through ball. Something to keep you going through the Desert. Also the Yids lost. x

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 12:10 pm

Focus on the finish line! Hope those blisters ease up soon. Great to hear your updates.

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 11:03 am

Keep going mate. Mufflers called off. You are still second in the fants. I have dropped to fifth. To my annoyance RVP literally does score he wants.

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 10:58 am

Keep going mate. Mufflers called off. You are still 2nd in the Fants. I have dropped to fifth. To my annoyane RVP literally does score when he wants.

Well done bud, keep up the good work!!!! Good luck for stage 2, hope the toe doesn't cause too many problems. If it is any comfort to you, it has been pissing with rain here all day!!!!! We are both thinking of you all the time, T&J xx

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 10:41 am

Well done mate...sounds like the hardest leg has been smashed...just keep getting stuck in. try and imagine you have Kevin Johnstone and TM barking in your ear when you're struggling the most. "Peters, stop playing with your Fore...." you know the rest. You'll be pleased to know VP gave Livepool a hiding this weekend...I could almost hear Nicks Ginger rage from Newcastle. London Media spanked old Cats 87-7 this weekend.... 7 points for yours truly. Keep on truckin Browner x

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 10:32 am

Well done stui ,you are doing so well ! I hope the next stage goes ok , look after your little toe! Really proud of you Xxx

Posted On: 05 Mar 2012 09:53 am

Well done Stu, a good shake-down on day 1 and you now have day 2 under your belt as well. No doubt you are getting comfortable with your kit (keep an eye on those poles), and enjoying the food! Its a great thing you are doing so take time to have a look around at the amazing country and run with a smile - it makes all the difference. Simon

01 March 2012 03:05 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

We have finally arrived after 30 hours of travelling and so far it has been pretty relaxed. After watching my bag ride along the escalator at Heathrow towards the plane the first Atacama person I met told me i should have that as my hand luggage as bags always go missing on the way to Chile - great start. We arrived in Madrid for a short change over, not a Paella in sight, much to my annoyance. So instead it was straight to Henry J Beans where they do not do the full rack of ribs - the trip already going from bad to worse. Anyway, we boarded the flight to Santiago and I managed to get some good sleep despite Gore Browne hogging the aisle seat because "he's got really long legs", he is 6 foot 1 at a push. Once we had arrived in Chile we were greeted by our bags and i treated myself to a wry smile at the person who told me my bag may not arrive. Everyone we have met is really nice, a mixture of Americans, Europeans, Asians, and Anzacs. The general concensus amongst the group is that I have far too much food with me and need to get rid of half of it. After a long drive through the desert to our hotel we are now in San Pedro De Atacama and my moderate spanish is coming in handy - "Ola, Que Tal?" to which one of my fellow racers responded "piss off you french twat" - when in rome. Just had a massive meal and off to bed as soon as sun sets. Rest day tomorrow, then briefings on saturday before heading out to the desert for our first night. If I do not blog every day dont worry, the internet may be down or the queue may be too big - i will aim to blog every day though. Hope you are all well. Cheers

Posted On: 04 Mar 2012 05:31 pm

Foots update... Arsenal smash and grab at anfield after going down again. Van P scores a brace and szczesny has a stormer. Chelsea proceed to lose 1-0 to the baggies! And then sack AVB. Di Matteo to take over for the rest of the season. Utd currently doing spurs 2-0, and the best part is, they really don't deserve it! France and Ireland drew 17 all in Paris... All good Ped x
