(Actually, it wasn't quite THAT bad!)

We're finally here.  The big day is over and it's now just a case of recovering in time for tomorrow's short lap into San Pedro and trying not to think too much about the pizza that is waiting on the finish line!

Reality struck yesterday in the mid-morning.  I ran about 20km no problems but my legs just didn't feel as good as they have on the previous two stages.  Then I managed to hyper-extend my bad knee coming into one of the checkpoints (just not looking where I was going). At that point the physical challenge ended and the mental one began.  Luckily, I bumped into Dan from my tent who has a bad knee and feet so we hooked up and ground our way through the whole thing.  I won't bang on about the heat and mind-numbing frustration of trying to push on for 14 plus hours - it'll probably be a little while before I feel like pushing myself like that again though!  Went we  hit CP6 there was a storm so we got held back.  Had to sit in the rain and cold for an hour and 40 mins! Very tough to get the legs moving again after that, be we hit the finish around midnight.  They promised that our times will be adjusted for the stop (I'll be looking closely at that!) but the effect of having to hang around really didn't help much.

Will got back a little after me.  He'd been bussed home when they cut off all runners who'd not made it to CP6.  He was seriously p!ssed off, not something that happens often.  We got some food though, rested up, and he was able to go out this morning and finish off the course.

Just the victory lap back to San Pedro to go! I think I will slip around 25-30 places after yesterday so I may not make my goal of a top half finish :( Couple of the boys in my tent just smashed it yesterday.  They'd done one of these events before and to be honest, it's a good strategy for doing well, but you still have to have to condition to pull it off.  Good guys...

OK, will be in touch when I get back to civilization.  Thanks again for all the comments!

dave

So, I think I'll drop 20-30 places so am not sure

Congratulations on a job done extremely well. I along with many others are so proud of this challenge that you set for yourself and Will and have now completed. I certainly enjoyed tracking your progress and seeing all the beautiful pictures each day. Like the saying or song goes," Ain't no mountain high enough. I guess that also could apply to sand dunes, plateaus, salt flats, rain, hail, cold, heat, and all the other obstacles you faced daily to keep you from your latest ambition and to top it off in such a grand style. Now, have a few drinks, eats, hot shower, and a wonderful birthday in BA. Have a beautiful journey home back to KL.

Congratulations my amazing husband!!! You did it!!! They've moved you from 81 to 76 (after day 4 you were 55th) but I don't think they've adjusted your time for the enforced 1hr40min stop - it says 15h57mins for stage 5. There were 147 starters. Whatevahhhhh!!! The time and placing is not important - you've done brilliant!!! Lots of love. X

Posted On: 10 Mar 2012 08:28 am

You were 81 but if they adjust the times that'll change I imagine. Saw the photo that Ela mentioned, gruuuhh, nice to see the guys helping you. Thinking of your arrival in San Pedro and your amazing achievement....pizza doesn't seem enough somehow?! 8)

Posted On: 10 Mar 2012 03:22 am

I thought about trying to have some roti canai shipped to y'all in time for the post-race celebration, but I just figured I'd be the one to have to bail it out of customs for you guys once I got here, so you'll just have to settle for pizza at the finish line and Steak/Malbec in BA! :) So proud of you guys for weathering all kinds of physical, mental, emotional, and literal storms out there in the desert. Can't nobody hold you down, oh no... Enjoy the last 10k tomorrow. Be sure to stop and smell the roses, or whatever it is that can grow out there, and just take it all in. You won't be enjoying air quite that fresh once you get back to KL! :) See you in BA! Cheers, Sarah

So, in as much as a 25 mile run across the desert in the middle of the day, carrying a pack and crossing very difficult terrain could ever be called easy, today was about as good as could be expected.  The profile was good for me; I warmed up slow for the first hour then just caned it for 14km, all the way to checkpoint 2.  I was lying 39th at that point!

That's where it all changes though - I just can't 'do' the heat so I have to dial it back a lot (going to be a big factor tomorrow).  We crossed the salt flats at that point - endless shimmering horizon of sharp, scorching, broken rock, salt and sand.  It was pretty nasty and just went on for ever...

THree back to back episodes of 'The American Life' really helped out though (thanks for that Loz!); the Ipods fully charged so that will be a key tactic for tomorrow too.

Two guys from our tent left this morning.  One guy retired and another was pulled with an injury - felt very bad for them.  Tonight we're camped by a couple of volcanic lagoons with chilly water.  I was in wearing my full kit as soon as I arrived!  Now instead of smelling like a farmyard, I smell like a swamp monster but the change is as good as a rest.  Slept out under the stars last night (too much snoring going on) - it was fantastic.  Gibbous moon gave us enough light that we could have run in it! I had to put an eye patch on just to get to sleep in the end.

Big day tomorrow.  Will and I are exactly where we wanted to be though; uninjured and fit for the 72km leg tomorrow.  The route starts off tough which is rough for me as I will be slow and probably walking by the time the heat comes.  It's going to be very different to what's come before.  I'm really really pleased with how I've performed on the last two stages, so if that's the last heroics that I can manage for the race' then I will be happy.

Thanks for all your comments - wish me luck tomorrow.  dave

p.s.SO sick of expedition food....

Hoh Doh ya know, brulliant effort! Keep it up, hope I can power on through as you are doing, currently working on some tracks to trek to. Dont forget to tell'em you're 40 on Sunday maybe you'll get the steaks for free! Be graad xx

Posted On: 09 Mar 2012 09:49 pm

Apparently they are throwing on some pizza and coke for you when you all get back to San Pedro. And some "Andean music". Which I'm sure you'll enjoy. Maybe if you're lucky some of the Chilean miners will turn up too. X

Posted On: 09 Mar 2012 09:25 pm

Nice one love. Had me worried for a bit after seeing that photo and then the long radio silence. But I am very proud of you. X

Posted On: 09 Mar 2012 06:59 pm

Congratulations Doh for that amazing effort, so glad to see you're in and hope you all set and ok for the last stage, way da go x

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 09:31 pm

Well, if you're reading this then you've finished the big one! You are AMAZING! I thought about going for a 3km run this morning, but then thought, "nah, it's a bit chilly and I think I fancy another cup of coffee...". So I did that instead :-) Running is overrated anyway. X

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 07:11 pm

Forgot to mention, we had snow again this morning.......I thought just the image of it might refresh you on your way..?!

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 05:23 pm

Can, lah!

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 10:56 am

Just think how much better those big juicy steaks and red wine will taste after all that expedition food! Great effort, tomorrow sounds like the big test, once you get through that downhill all the way to excessive protein and grape juice! PS how many gel packs should I take for my Saturday morning adventure? 2 or maybe 3?

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 09:38 am

Dave, Shari, Will's mother-in-law, suggested I read your blog. I hope that's alright with you. You and will clearly make a great team. Since Will is competing in this race, I'm glad he's doing it with you. It's a relief the last finish line will soon be seen by one and all. As ready as Shari and I are for it, we can only imagine how the two of you must feel! Our prayers are with you both...Melanie

You are now 55th out of 134 runners still in! You are doing so well Dave, your photos are good and the knee strapping shows up well the pain you are going through. Must have been great to actually immerse in water and sleep under the stars! For that I am envious. Keep going. Love mum and dad xxxxx

Posted On: 08 Mar 2012 05:26 am

Keep going Doh, hope you manage that mental 72kms.

06 March 2012 07:12 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Yep.  So today was so special it gets two songs in the title!

Invincible (dreadful song) First 25 km were fantastic! It actually felt like my training had been relevant i.e. had a decent surface to run on.  It was so much fun; around the middle I literally had tears of joy rolling down my face - running smooth in the early sunshine, volacnoes all around and 'System of a Down' on the Ipod.  I felt like I could take a bullet and still keep running! (perhaps I'd had a few too many Gu shots by then!)

Citizen Erazed - Ok, they DID tell us the last 15km were going to be tough, but i the end, it was just cruel and unusual.  Nope, I don't want to talk about it.  Suffice to say I was broken when I got into camp.

Still amazes me how fast the body recovers though!  Good news; a few changes to the pack and some tape and my shoulders were not too bad today.  Bad news, my right knee has started to throb and was pretty swollen by the end.  We're not supposed to have ibuprofen (liver's having a tough enough week as it is) so it's just elevation and, well, fingers crossed!

Will got in a bit after me.  Was struggling, but he's shrugged it off already I can tell.  We're not talking about tomorrow or Thursday.  Much better to think about steaks in Buenos Aires on the way home.....

Thank you everyone who has written; I am getting the mails, can't tell you what a lift it is.  Very pleased with my position!  Please keep me updated as you're clearly all getting more info than we are!

Wish me luck for tomorrow! dave

(hallo my lovely wife and baby! I miss you very much and am talking to your pictures every evening :))

Just as long as she doesn't grow up to ba as daft as her daddy! 55 overall! Climbing up the leader board. Fantastic effort. Swollen knee is just a flesh wound, you did talk about bullets.....

Posted On: 07 Mar 2012 06:37 pm

My mummy says if I eat my food nicely I'll grow up to be as big and strong as daddy. But I say "Whatever. Where's the fun in that? I'd rather be a weakling and chuck it all over the carpet instead". Love you daddy. X

Posted On: 07 Mar 2012 05:56 pm

They haven't posted the day 4 results yet, but I've got my fingers crossed for you! We've been over to Cambridge today to visit Edith. Your baby is being a little superstar and trying to walk, with her bandy legs. I think I will need to make her some mini-gators before long! Will email you in a mo... X

So when do we all set sail for Thailand? You boys have had enough of the desert! Continue to take good care of yourself and my darling Will. We have some celebrating to do soon!

Posted On: 07 Mar 2012 12:27 pm

Trust you to be smiling on the pics, hope your knee holds out ok, good luck for tomorrow, go Doh go x

Posted On: 07 Mar 2012 08:37 am

Awww, we miss you too! I am so pleased you did well yesterday cos I saw your gator had come loose and was fretting! Yep, you've gone up a bit in the rankings - 66 to 63. Will is still doing well and after day 3 he is ranked 108 (was 98 after day 2). No-one dropped out yesterday so there are still 142 in the race. But by the time you read this you will have completed day 4, so all could have changed by then! Keep going my love, and blast out those Muse tunes...X

Posted On: 07 Mar 2012 03:36 am

hey buddy. you are looking great. after stage 3 you are 63rd overall and climbing. There are also some great pictures of you climbing a sand dune towards the end of stage 3 on the website. You look strong. Funnily enough, you look as unshaven and unkempt as a regular Tuesday in the office!

05 March 2012 06:20 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Stage 2 - Good!
First 20 odd km was one of the most beautiful runs you could imagine.  Along rocky ridges with a skyline of volcanoes on the horizon.  We then dropped down a huge sand dune (think the photographer was there so you might see it).  From there we went into the 'Valley of Death' (nice) which was pretty fast, being hard packed and slightly downhill.

Wheels came off a bit after that.  We had our first experience of salt flats and it doesn't make me relish the prospect of 40km of the same on Wednesday.  Had a lot of pain in my shoulders toward the end which made running hard as my bag kept crashing down with every step.  Very hot too. Got in just after 6 hours - happy with that.

Back in the camp now.  Took quite a while to get back to feeling human.  I've got two lumps like golf balls under each shoulder and I think I'm going to really suffer with that tomorrow.  Went to the med tent, but there's really not much they can do about it to help me.  As Will would say, 'I could just suck it up...'.

So, still feeling good.  Legs hurt like hell, but that's to be expected I suppose.  Best of all, I don't think I've lost any weight yet and I'm keeping well hydrated.

Word is tomorrow is the hardest day of all.  35km across loose sand, then four huge sand dunes to cross in the last 10km - all in view of the camp! Sounds deeply unpleasant....

OK, there's a queue so I'll wind this up.  Can someone send me my overall position?  I know how I did on both days, but we dont get to see the overall.  Think I'm middle of the pack, and in this company I would be VERY happy with a top half finish.

Laters, dave

Well done number 66. You are improving on 74 from day 1. Aunty Liz says "Why did'nt you just have a Party?" Keep up the good work!

Posted On: 06 Mar 2012 07:36 am

Well done darling boy! What's with the shoulder pains though?!? That's a new one, must be the new pack. Yes, you're now 66 overall, you were 74 after day 1. Will's also climbing, going up from 101 on day 1 to 98 after day 2. Well done to you both. I'll send an email later when I've palmed off this wriggly baby from my lap. She keeps lurching for the keyboard and mouse... Love you. X

You're lucky number 66, Dave. Well done!

04 March 2012 08:40 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

OK, this will be quick as theres a tornado howling through camp just now!

Stage 1 went well.  Pack is too heavy but once I got warmed up all was good.  First 20km were bliss - no really! Hot sun but cool air and a beautiful course.  From there on we hit an interminable hill that really tested out my legs.  Checkpoint 3 was at the top (mercifully) and after a few strtches, I was good all the way into camp.

Tired now but no worse than after a normal Saturrday run.  The REAL work starts tommorrow.  Back to back marathons for three days and then.....well, you know.

p.s. weathers been horrid in camp!

Look at me running in slow motion. And eating packs of expedition food. Euuww, that's nasty! I'm a hungry little bastard, i'll eat anything. Honey badger doesn't give a sh!t. Uh huh, honey badger just runs around in the desert and all his friends say "Hey stoopid, whatcha doing in that desert, running around like a stoopid bastard". But the honey badger doesn't care. He just eats and runs and doesn't give a sh!t. The honey badger.

Hope your pack of "car parts" gets lighter and lighter as the days (and hours) go by, Dave. Just think, this time next week you'll be reliving some of these memories over steaks and malbec! Keep up the good work!

02 March 2012 10:30 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Check in for the race tomorrow and tonight is my last night in a real bed for a while! First the good stuff: - Acclimatisation training has gone well. Two days of running above 4000m just to get out of breath and spike our systems to start the chemical changes required to thicken up the blood. - We're here. We're talking. All our stuff made it and (touch wood) we're both healthy and without injury! - While San Pedro is a tad dubious (gringo backpacker haunt - and that's the good bit!) the running location is going to be stunning. To be able to look up and 5 and 6 thousand meter peaks while I'm running is going to be amazing - I feel very lucky! The Bad Stuff: - Lot's of rain of late are going to make it heavy going under-foot. Just hoping they won't change (or curtail!) the route at all with last minute changes. - Lot's of VERY tough looking hombres rocking up in town! Hard core, steely eyed, machines are walking the streets foaming at the mouth and waiting for the starting gun - gulp! No pressure. Actually, I really don't feel any yet! Just looking forward to the ride now - it's going to be fun. Speak to you (who?) from Camp 2 next, after the first stage is done and I know exactly what I'm in for! dave :)

Ok. It's done. The car's picking me up in an hour and it's finally time to head to Chile. Just spent a heart-wrenching couple of hours decided which pieces of utterly essential kit can, and which can't, fit into my hand luggage. It's going to take a lot of creativity (but probably a lot less money!) to replace my kit if my check-in luggage doesn't show up. That lovely wife of mine just reminded to look up sports shops in Buenos Aires in case I lose the lot. Good psychology; if I'm prepared to replace it all, then I won't need to right?! I've got all 13 hours of the Lord of the Rings Director's Cut on my Ipad, and have downloaded 'Born to Run' to get me through the flight. Gonna be a breeze... boom! p.s. Rosh and Jane, I will of course be running with my custom 'Jimmy Choo' marathon pack. Perhaps I'll get a prize for style ;)

Boom! That's our 'B' race successfully completed!! Will and I teamed up to race in the North Face 100 last weekend - that's two of us doing 100km between us, so really 'just' 50km. Impressions of the race? Hot! I mean, REALLY hot. According to Yahoo it got up to about 40 degC in the early afternoon and although we can expect up to 10 degrees more in Chile, the humidity of Singapore made it a really uncomfortable experience. Will did great. He had a race plan and we stuck to it from the first mile to the last. We were consistent on pace the whole way around such that completing the race was almost uneventful. Has to be said that the organisation was sh!te. Someone made a bunch of cash putting that event on. The signage was poor; crap goody bags and to add injury to insult, they ran out of water when we reached the 35km mark! (Having warm 100Plus is available is no substitute btw). Nonetheless, we had a good day out, finished strong and got a big boost to our confidence as well. A recovery tip you might not find in many of the running magazines but which I can thoroughly recommend? Standing in a red hot shower drinking an ice cold beer after running 50km in the heat! Crack it open and enjoy, then pick yourself up off the tiles and do it again.... p.s. Met a nice bloke called Tom Soper on the startline. He was decked out in RTP badges so we went and had a chat - turns out he came 13th in this year's Atacama! Nice guy and he's been really helpful with tips on training and what to take since.

Wow Dave, you're below the 3 month mark - Are you running up those bukits? Just read Mr. Ruckers entry that you referred to - it's brilliant to have a strong companion. Let us know some of your weekly mileage! and keep us posted!

28 August 2011 07:32 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

7 weeks since I broke my foot, and I'm back to running a little over 10km at a time now; that's both with and without the bag, road and off-road! I'm pretty sure I'm healing well as whilst I would happily blame the foot for pulling up early this weekend, the TRUE reason is that I'm just not fit enough right now! Not to worry; I know that it will come back soon and with my new bionic nose I'll be performing even better! The REALLY big news is that Will got signed up this week :) It's going to be great to have my buddy along to lean on, to look after and of course to check out some great wines and food post-race! He's clearly set himself a goal of 'out-blogging' me too, and reading his first entry, he certainly has a gift for it. Swim and static bike for me today (cross-training? oh yeah) to rest the legs and back a bit. I'm off to Perth tomorrow for a couple of days - my number one travel business destination for running! It'll be winter down there so here's hoping for a long one....

21 August 2011 06:14 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Four weeks of dragging my left foot around in a plastic hoof and I'm finally free!! So far it seems that the metatarsal is fixed up; unfortunately the tendons of my foot, and my calf muscles have pretty much wasted away! I starting off with a few stretches and just walking for a couple of minutes. I moved from that to gentle jogs up and down our street in KL and this morning I managed a 5k!! A long way to go to running 250km in a week right? I've started back in the pool a bit also to get my fitness back up - that's a struggle too! I was doing 3km sets a few months ago; now I'm gasping after just 500m! It's all good though. I've got the bug again, plus I've got the additional motivation of seeing Will and Rob streaking ahead in terms of their fitness! I WILL compete with them again! p.s. Was just standing out in the corridor with WIll and Rob when one of the ladies in the office came by and says "Hey guys, you talking about running again?". Might as well live up to our reputation right? :)

30 July 2011 09:46 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Ok, back to the running blog. So, just to make things interesting: First - I bought a set of Vibram 5 fingers to try and build my support strength a little in anticipation of the salt flats and loose rock in Chile. Not such a great plan if you don't read the instructions. I went out and did a 'warm up' 12 km in them. All fine; bit sore in the calves, but nothing I didn't want. Then after the second run a big lump came up on my left foot. I gave it a couple of days to calm down, but it wasn't getting any better. Cutting a long story short, the MRI shows multiple stress fractures of the mid-metatarsal and I'm now in a Transformers-style robo-boot for a month. No idea what the prognosis after that - I guess I'll just have to start back easy and see how I get on. Second - I've always been a bit of a snotty, sniffly guy, but my sinuses really started to play up badly over the past few months. It's been getting difficult in presentations (not to mention eating!) so I thought I'd get it looked at. Nasal Polyps it would seem. So went and got those fixed. Sounds easy, but that was one of the more painful/uncomfortable/distressing things I've been through (and I've had my large intestine removed btw!). Should take 3 or 4 more weeks to fix. On the bright side - I was on a couple of weeks off anyway, and better to be out of action for two things rather than just one right?! Looking forward to getting back to training around September. I'll be a plodder in Chile anyway, so I'm not too dispondent. More concerned about keeping up with Rucker (Will) when we race the North Face 100 in October. Wasn't he supposed to be slower than me?!! :) Now, let's use this downtime for other preparation like getting some flights booked......

Thanks Shrimathi! Still hoping to do Singapore, although it may be more of a walk than a run! The cast is off now so I'm carefully rehabilitating the foot which seems to have wasted away in the last month! All the best with your training - see you in Chile!

Hi David, First of all, congratulations on the arrival of Elissa Joy Carr, what can be more exciting than a baby? Secondly, sorry to hear about the foot and the sinuses. I am a Vibrams runner too, my sympathies. I will be plodding in the Atacama, so don't think you have no competition! Are you going to run TNF100 in Singapore? Take care and hope you get back to running soon...Shri

So the big news is that my first daughter, Elissa Joy Carr was born on July 15th at 8:15 in the morning. She's a gorgeous little blonde and mother and daughter are getting along famously :) All went well for the planned ceasarian and I was allowed to see her being plucked from my lovely wife's belly. A great big thank you to Ritta and all the ladies at Racing the Planet who allowed me to transfer my race entry during this time. I was due to run the Gobi toward the end of the pregnancy, but due to some issues I had to pull out. All has worked out fabulously! I really appreciate your consideration in letting me move my race to Atacama :)

Great fun this week following the guys on the Gobi March.  I really enjoy getting the updates throughout the day - l like to think of Ela and the guys looking out for me when I'm in the Atacama!
That was the good bit; the bad bit is that I have not run ONCE this week!  We had the half marathon in KL last Sunday.  A gang of us ran it, including Will who's now completed his first goal, going from not being able to run 2km at the start of the year, to completing the 21km course comfortably! Good effort mate.
I had to make a trip to Jakarta - always a danger.  My goals where to not get led astray and get drunk, and to get a run in every day.  I suppose one out two is not bad, but I didn't get any runs in!
Crazy week in other ways.  Ela had her penultimate scan on Monday.  Our little girl is now over 3kg and the doctor is glad that we've planned a ceasarian since when she gets to full term there may not be any other options!
Working this weekend to get ready for the imminent arrival of a variety of senior VPs and the COO.  I don't have much good news to report to them, so it's not going to be fun when they get here.  HAVE to get out for a run today - then it might be time to head down to Brickfields for a curry :)

I looked up at my year planner yesterday to see that I had pencilled myself to be in China all this week. The plan was to go and visit our job in Chengdu for a couple of days, then fly up to Urumqui to meet with some prospective clients. In reality of course, the plan had been to stay on to do the Gobi March straight afterwards! Although my body feels pretty glad that I don't have to take that on this weekend, I can't help but feel sad that I won't be at the start line, and I know it's going to kill me all next week when I'm getting the updates from the race. Go for it Gobi Marchers - I'll be watching every day. As penance, I'll be running the Standard Chartered Half Marathon here in KL instead. Big gang of us doing it and I foresee a long, boozy brunch to follow! Had a good weekend running just past also. 15km around the park on Saturday, followed by an 18km through the hills at FRIM with Lauren, Rob and Will on Sunday. Pretty beat after that, but nothing too bad. This weekend sees the start of the 16 week countdown to the North Face 100 in Singapore - that'll be my B or C race prior to Chile!

First time around was Sahara 2010, but my company decided to relocate me on the other side of the world that week and the boss wasn't too cool about it. Then it was Gobi 2011 - long story that one including my wife callously deciding that was the week she wanted to give birth to my first child, so that got scratched. Atacama will the third time lucky - I'm sure of it. I might even get it together with some training too.
