Atacama Crossing (2007) blog posts from Greg Manciagli

I am not dead yet!

The Atacama Crossing is held each year in the Atacama Desert, located in the northern section of Chile; it is one of the four desert races hosted by Racing the Planet. The Sahara Race, in Egypt; the Gobi March, in China; and the Last Desert, in the Antarctica, comprise the other three. Each race is 150 miles (250 kilometers) in length and all are 7 days in length and are self-supported. Each participant is required to carry all the food (2000 calories/day min), clothing and a required list of other equipment they will need for the event. The only items provided by the sponsor are water (approximately 9 liters/day) and a tent (shared with seven other individuals). Essentially, competitors run 4 marathons, a double marathon and a final short leg over the course of the seven days; although, the actual distance covered each day may be a bit longer or shorter than a marathon.

I am going to attempt explain and describe, in this recount, my thoughts, fears, joys and overall experience as I participated in the 2007 crossing; as well as describe the course as I experienced it. While I do not pretend to know what everyone went through during the race, I do know that, to some extent, we all had similar emotional and physical experiences. What the race meant to each person and what they took away from it only they can know

Greg, You did beautifully, esp. with the bad ankle. Importantly, you were an outstanding race participant - always asking if we had what we needed, cutting short your blog so others get theirs' done before the satellite was shuttered, and so on. You must have good parents! Let's stay in touch. Tom G. [email protected]

Whooah...I did myself proud yesterday...the long stage.

We were informed yesterday morning that there was a slight addition error and the long stage was going to be 47 miles and not 40.

Way to go Buddy. Tremendous. Here I was pleased with my 40 minute elliptical yesterday.

Posted On: 25 Aug 2007 03:30 pm

Do you really need a horn in the middle of a desert? Doesn't that just add extra weight? By the way, did you ever see Wily E. Coyote? He toots his own horn. (Beep Beep) Just kidding. You and your buddies are truly amazing. We (your family) never said you were stupid - just crazy. There's a difference. Anyway, you proved a lot out there and have much to be proud of. Congrats!

Posted On: 24 Aug 2007 08:11 pm

you haven't been showering???

Posted On: 24 Aug 2007 05:38 pm

Unbelieveable, considering your injured foot!! As Bruce says; absolutely inspiring. Just goes to show what one can accomplish with the right attitude and strength. Can imagine how much you are yearning for the finish line and a hot shower and fresh clothes. You are almost there. Love, Mom

Your determination is amazing! Keep smiling and stay safe and well....the end is in sight. Your blogs are fascinating. See you at Costco after you get back!

Posted On: 24 Aug 2007 02:35 am

Greg - you are truly amazing. 99.9% of people would have already thrown in the towel. Hang in there. You invested far too many hours pulling that damn tire down the street to quit now. I kind of liked Dave's suggestions best. HA HA HA. Be well, my friend.

Posted On: 23 Aug 2007 04:29 pm

You have new challenges ahead, you didn't come this far to turn back. Stay focused, remain positive, take the challenge! You can do anything, if you put your mind to it! I know you can & will do it!

Posted On: 23 Aug 2007 02:05 pm

Greg - YOU CAN DO THIS!- you know you can - keep your mind strong -- you'll finish - you know you will.

Posted On: 23 Aug 2007 01:26 pm

Way to go - I am so proud of you for hanging in there. I am back on line after a couple of frustrating days. Today will really test your inner strength, but know you are ready to battle the demons. May God be with you. Love, Mom

Posted On: 23 Aug 2007 02:30 am

You'll have to excuse me if I'm not quite the poetic wordmaster as L'il Bro. Not all us are the beneficiaries of an Ivy league (read Commie Pinko) education. As they told me in the Marines, it's gut check time, jarhead. Wait a minute, after all that training, you don't have a gut do you. Now whatcha gonna do? Nay, but seriously Brother G, one more big one and you're free and clear. I've got a whole bag of chips right here if you need an extra one. Let's get ready Houston, the big guy's bringing it home.

Posted On: 23 Aug 2007 01:44 am

pues, que to puedo decir ahora que bruce lo ha dicho tal cual...... ...............................Godspeed!

Posted On: 23 Aug 2007 12:37 am

Hang in there. Let the wild Pacific, the mother of all oceans, draw you across the desert. You can hear its waves crashing on the shore just beyond the peaks in the distance. The desert may seem endless at times, but know that you carry the coolness of the forest, the peace of the night, and the energy of the Pacific within you. Don't entertain the monsters that live only in your head - don't feed them your precious energy - stay focused on the now - on the truth. Your experience is defined by the quality of your awareness. The world contracts and expands in proportion to your courage. Triumph!

Greg, If you finish the race, I will marry your sister. Good luck, Charlie

Posted On: 22 Aug 2007 05:19 pm

Hi Greg, sorry to hear of the injury, but you are tough and you will make it. I read an artical that says if you put a handful of fresh Lama Dung on your ankle over night that it has great healing powers and then when it dries you can smoke it.(kidding) What a shame as you have trained so hard for this. If it's any constalation to you Joe and Debbbie are doing ther best to kill me in your absence, so hurry back. In a way this could be a good thing because chicks like to nurse hurt guys back to health (it's a mother thing) so moan real loud late at night and you may get a real nice over night nurse to help you releave the swelling so to say, More tomorrow, Dave

Posted On: 22 Aug 2007 03:44 pm

Hang in there, Dude. You're almost there. It can't be any harder than Sculptor.

Hey there, Congrats on Stage 3- cannot imagine with that ankle, but I'm guessing you are in a totally different place mentally and physically than any of us could imagine. (Not crazy, just different...) Lots and lots of positive thoughts coming your way. diva

Posted On: 22 Aug 2007 12:22 am

Happy to know you are still hanging in there, but don't know how anybody can do it. It sounds so challenging, but it seems you are determined so keep up the good work. Glad the ankle is holding up okay, but what about that long race coming up.

Posted On: 22 Aug 2007 12:05 am

Hi Greg My brother Rory is also doing this crazy, amazing race. Sorry to bother you but could you please wish my brother well and if he could check his email. Sorry about your ankle good luck with the rest of the race. Best Wishes Valerie

Hey Greg! Long time no talk! I've been hearing about you from dad and from your blog. I think it's awesome you're doing this, even pushing on through your injury to complete the journey. :) I remember when you, Shane and Chad, Andy and I all went paintballing one time, and I remember I sprained my ankle a little jumping over this one log. I also remember getting shot in the neck lol, but the view in the forest wasn't nearly as fascinating as where you must be. I remember we played a round of Terminator and we got to play target practice on you and you "couldn't die" but we could! I still remember the welts you had. haha. Anywho, Just to let ya know that we're thinking about you and I hope your ankle stops giving you a hard time and that you complete the course like you want. :) USA represent! woohoo! :)

Posted On: 21 Aug 2007 06:16 pm

Hey Big Bro: I'm a little bit behind the events as they are unfolding, so I'm not sure where things stand right now. Hopefully, you were able to get through Stage 2 and are now back in the thick of things. But remember that the real glory in these things is not where you place but merely the fact that you started the race. Those that don't finish for whatever reason have nothing to hang their heads about. They've already accomplished way more than the rest of us. Whether you've joined the support crew or are leading the pack, just take it all in and have a great time. Love ya.

Posted On: 21 Aug 2007 04:53 pm

You know that we're all pulling for you and are thinking and sending all the positive energy that we know you'll feel -- even at this moment. Andrew and Maegan are following your progress and your story so you have now have a couple more supporters here. Thanks for keeping us posted. No advice. Some cultures might suggest you pee on the ankle, but I think that really only helps for a jellyfish sting. So save your pee for any jellyfish lurking ahead.

Posted On: 21 Aug 2007 05:57 am

We are all sending good healing energy your way. I personally am drinking 2 Pisco sours to celebrate Day 2. Seriously, I was so glad to hear you were able to stay in the race. I know how competitive you are, but just for a moment allow the race to take on a different meaning for you. Sometimes life gives us lemons and we have to make pisco sours. Keith Lynda and I are thinking of you.

Posted On: 21 Aug 2007 05:53 am

Your ankle is in no way related to you. It is a weak, adopted ankle. The ugly duckling of your other ankle. Show it who's boss. Pain is weakness leaving the body. Miss you I know you'll do well.

Posted On: 21 Aug 2007 04:30 am

Greg...we're so sorry to hear about the ankle. You are strong and all your training is going to get you through. Everyone is sending lots of positive energy your way....You know us Smulski's never are top finishers in our races but we still have a good time....enjoy the "journey"! Ron and Mary

Posted On: 21 Aug 2007 12:09 am

Hope it all works out for the best. You have to know your body and what it can withstand. I pray for a miraculous recovery so you can continue. Bruce says it best I guess. Hang in there. Love, Mom

Posted On: 20 Aug 2007 10:28 pm

No worries. The ankle twist happened - the question now is how to respond. Stay focused and reflect on what your motivation is now, in this moment. Let go of resistance, regret, expectations. If the ankle can't handle it - not a problem - you regroup to run another race. If it can, then make your resolve, see your healthy body moving across the landscape toward your goal, soak it all in with a smile, and keep going.

So glad you didn't get too near the geyser pools - sounds like a dreadful ending for a person. KInd of you to share your room in Atacama - what are friends for after all!! Get some rest for your take off on Sunday. Looking forward to hearing all about it. Love, Mom

Posted On: 17 Aug 2007 01:23 am

Thanks for the update, Greg. It sounds like the view from the plane was a nice way to reflect on the coming journey in the high desert with the wild Pacific coastline just over the range. Nice to hear your bags, gear, and most of the food made it with you (I'm assuming the jerky did not). We look forward to the next update. Your body should be a bit more adjusted to the altitude by Sunday - either way, your mind will push on through. Have fun and stay in the moment. Bruce

Posted On: 17 Aug 2007 12:38 am

The geysers sound cool! Don't try to fool us you wouldn't know what to do with your self if you got to sleep past 4:00:) I'm glad to hear you won't need the altitude drugs the side effects sounded like they may hamper your race. Have fun! Can't wait to hear about the tenting adventures:)

Hey Greg, You mention your food and drinks. I was unable to take my water on the plane. Still a big deal. I was able to take my nail clippers from the US but on my return flight home they took them as well as my nail file. They took a wooden horn out of my sons bag and said we couldn't take the item's. I am looking forward to tracking your journey. Have fun!!!! Aynn

Quite right Gary, I thought from the photo you were by far the best looking of the trio. Certainly gave these two rascals a showing up and how very kind of you to stay behind them to make sure they were ok. You're a real hero mate!

Posted On: 23 May 2007 10:52 pm

For the record, I only did 32.25 miles (one lap less than J.Low, and two less than Peg Leg Greg) - and we won't mention anyone getting mugged by beavers! And both J.Low and I were man enough to carry our tires where any self respecting man should - around his belly!) The 12 hour race was a good test for sure.

I enjoyed the blog, particularly the review of gear and technical research. Post more on the details: type of sun protection, carrying water (quantity, bottles, holders), socks/underwear, shades, diet, supplements, etc. I would cut down on the Bangers & Mash - just a thought. Carrying through on the body as (Greek) temple theme, some of the new neighbors may be wondering if Sisyphus has returned - this time as an Italian-American lugging a Goodyear tire up and down the hills of Sammamish. You could really carry this theme through, what with the race starting on a volcano (Mt. Olympus) and traversing the fiery desert ... I'm sure there's plenty of other symbolism in there - would make for an interesting thesis (The Search for Hero in Greek Mythology and the 4 Deserts). Good luck with the training and keep the faith. Bruce

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeP!  This concludes our test.  We now return you to Greg's very serious and informative training and equipment blog. :)

March has not started out as a strong training month.  I just cannot seem to schedule any runs of meaningful length or time.  Were it not for the spinning classes I teach and my weight workouts I might pass for a Northwest slug...or worse, a Geoduck (pronounced gooeyduck.  It is a very ugly clam for those lucky enough to never have feasted your eyes on this freak of nature)!  Yikes, I had better get my proverbial arse in gear as we only have 159 days left.  Work has been a big contributor to my lack of time.  My appointments have been so helter skelter that it has been hard to find a large block of time to get the runs in.  I guess I could give up sleep...I have only been averaging 4 hours a night for the past week anyway so why not just give it up completely.

I purchased most of my food the other day.  I am now going to get all my gear together and see how it fits in my pack.  This weekend I have a 69 floor climb/race in the Columbia Tower in Seattle.  I am going to race to the top with the pack.  While it is not a long run it should be fun to see how it feels climbing all that way with the weight.

You know, they just don't make things the way they used to.  Shouldn't a person expect, nay, demand that a tire should give you at least 50,000 miles (80,000+ kilometers) out of radial tires?  Well, I have already worn completely through one of my training tires!  I arrived home the other week from a run only to find that the sidewall on one side had been completely worn through...oh well, it was free so I went and secured another one to use.

Until next time my friends.
