Kicking butt and taking names! I can feel you close by to nite. 7 miles and it's in the bag. See you at the square in the morning. You are amazing, and very well thought of by those here who left the race early. I am so proud of you, and so anxious to see you. Sleep well and if your body will allow you to let go of any of that liquid during the night, look down and then look up at that amazing sky. I love you, me

Hi Jacqui, fellow yankee here, though from the right coast (I mean that only directionally; I prefer the left coast). I too am new to the desert race genre; sounds like we are all in good company with other desert virgins. My training runs have been rough since it has been SO HOT here in the DC area. The humidity consistently put the heat index over 100 degrees. My heat acclimation is in place, but I had to sacrifice some miles in doing so. Looking forward to meeting you in San Pedro with the rest of the competitors.

Jacqi Liddiard

Glad to know that there are other desert virgins out there besides myself and I can't wait to meet you all :) I feel like there is a ton of things that I will be learning and the first one has got to be how to store this gear. Shelley, I'm trying to figure out how to get my sleeping pad on the outside of my pack. I'm thinking my bag will fit inside, probably on the bottom. But my pad is one of those accordion-like squishy pads. I've seen pictures of them strapped to the outside but am not sure how it's done. Sam, my pack is an OMM 25L. I feel like everything will fit but it's so lumpy! I know there's got to be a way of cramming and smashing that is a bit more organized than what I'm doing :) Tony, thank you for offering to help! I did take a picture, which may have been a mistake, as looking at the pile on the floor made me question my sanity! If you can let me know what email I should use I will happily send it your way :) Thank you everyone for the tips and I will be happy to share anything I learn!! Jacqi

Posted On: 21 Aug 2016 03:38 pm

I'm a desert crossing virgin too! And am glad to see I'm not alone in feeling some anxiety around the packing! Did you find a solution to affix your sleeping bag to the outside?? See you in a few weeks (eeek!)

Welcome back Jacqi. Glad to hear your ankle has healed nicely. Ya gotta get used to that backpack and attaching, cramming, and fitting all the gear should be no problem. stay healthy.

Hi Jacqi, it's great that all your plans are coming together, even if some days it doesn't feel like that. If you would like some help with your kit, send me a picture of all your key, including your bag and I can see iff I can help. The two bulkiest items will be your sleeping bag and pad and your biggest category will be your food and snacks, everything else is quite small. So if you have the lights, smallest versions of these you shouldn't have a problem. e-mail me your picture and I will see what I can see.

Sam F

Posted On: 15 Aug 2016 01:04 am

Sounds like you are exactly where you should be with 6 weeks of training to go. Do let me know which pack you are using and I will see if I can offer any handy hints to fit everything in.
