Just ran my final "long run" on a beautiful sun-filled fall morning here in Calgary.  Lots of colourful trees to run through and barely a breeze.  I love the smell of autumn.  I spent a good portion of this run reflecting on the last six months, as well as what is to come in the next dozen or so days.  I find it motivating to reflect back to all of the struggles that were faced during this gruelling training program.  Whether it was running out of water on a scorching hot day, getting caught in a rain storm, or tripping over a tree stump and rolling down a hill while being witnessed by others...it's all a part of the process that makes us stronger.  The countless times I had to turn down my friends' offers to hit a pub, due to a scheduled long run 12 hours later.  The diversity of makeshift washrooms on a saturday morning.  Surviving the chaffing battle, and the horribly painful shower that followed!

Sure I like to run.  But it's what's attached to running that fuels this addiction.

The running community.  Runners are awesome.  They're so happy.  Being shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of runners at the start line of a race, all preparing to reach a goal they have set for themselves.  It's a special feeling that can hardly be explained.  I also have yet to pass a fellow runner on a trail without getting a wave or a thumbs up.  That's cool to me.

The playing field.  A runner has an endless choice.  I remember the NYC Marathon a few years back, and the mayhem that came with it.  Helicopters flying overhead, TV cameras, sirens, and thousands of people lining the streets cheering with signs and horns.  It was so great to be a part of that.  Now fast forward ahead two weeks, to a desert run in Chile.  Could the two be any more different?

The challenge.  I love a challenge.

That's why I run.

Leaving Wednesday for the Atacama.  Feet fail me not.   Look forward to meeting everyone!!

Hi...I'm Troy from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and extremely excited to meet you all in Chile in September.  I have never blogged before, but wanted to share a few of my experiences during my training process.  As I have never run an Ultra Marathon before, it has been a whole new world for me, and am very thankful that this 45 year old body is withstanding the gruelling mileage so far (crossing fingers).  I'm very blessed to have so many awesome trails to train on within the city of Calgary, it's a beautiful city and nice and close to the rocky mountains.

At the moment, I would say roughly 50% of my runs are with my backpack at full weight.  I find that running with the backpack has gotten easier with every run...so that's cool.  At the start I had a few issues with chaffing.  My lower back seems to be getting beaten up a bit from rubbing, so have to figure that out.  Other than that, my 25L Ultimate Direction backpack has been great.

I am a music lover.  I don't think I have ever trained without my music.  The worst two words to hear when training is "battery low".  I love everything from Hard rock, Classic rock, Soft rock, folk, instrumental...you name it and chances are good it's on the shuffle.  I haven't listened to any podcasts so if anyone has any good options, I would be game to check it out.  Anyone using their music/podcasts during this race?  I have seen a few people wearing earbuds in the videos, but not many.

I guess if I had to mention one struggle I've had, it would be "second guessing" myself.  This is new territory for me, and I always seem to be worried I'm not doing it right.  Am I running too much and burning out...or am I not running enough?  Am I purchasing the correct items?  Am I over packing or under packing?  I guess that comes with any upcoming competition that an athlete is training for.  Other than that, I have been enjoying the training.

My family and friends all think I'm a little weird for doing this.  I'm sure you all have had to answer the same question, which is "why".   And although my responses always seem to be different from one person to the next, the word "challenge" always comes up.  I'm excited for this challenge.

Keep pushing everybody...proud of all of you.

Thanks for reading this everybody, and again very excited to seeing you soon!

Thanks Zeana...I started using tape a couple weeks back and it seems to be helping. Thank you, and see you very soon! Great tips Tony, thanks. Look forward to meeting you in a few weeks.

Hi Troy, great to read your blog. Everyone gets nervous, you would have to dead from the neck up not to let this worry you a little. As far as training goes, you need to work out how you're going to end up doing the race. If you think you can run the thing, then run in your training. If you think you will need to run and walk, then train that way. Lastly if you think you're going to walk the whole thing, the train that way. Normally it will be a mixture, as log as you keep moving forward. I see so many people who have trained by running and then find it very difficult to walk when they need to. They haven't trained their muscles or their mind for that. Try this - run when you can, walk when you can't and cry the rest of the time. Good luck, see you in San Pedro

Hi Troy - this is a great blog! Thank you for sharing. It really sounds like you have things under control, especially for a first timer. Great job getting the training in with the full pack and feeling that you are getting stronger. That is inspirational! I also get chaffing from my pack around my lower back and sides, I usually end up putting on tape that stays for the week, and that help. But it does take a bit of trial and error to make sure the tape doesn't end up chaffing you more .... ! I look forward to meeting you very soon in San Pedro.

Hey Patrick...I'm happy to hear your 55km went well! I am still working toward that big one but almost there. Gotta love 70's Rock! Less than 2 months to go...I look forward to meeting you there. Best of luck with your training.

Dear Troy, I really appreciate your blog as I am a newbie to the ultra running community. Your description of concerns fit me to a T. From someone who knows next to nothing about stage racing, your workouts sound spot on. I too am running about 50% with my pack. I did just complete a 55 K run with my pack loaded. My 57 year old body got worked for sure but it let me know what it feels like to go that distance. All this to say we are in it together. We can help each other get through! I will be brining head phones and a small charger with out a doubt. Got to have my 70's rock! See you soon, patrick prag Colorado USA
