BRAVO! Our throats are sore from shouting that from the mountain top! Ryan, our admiration for you has grown by leaps and bounds as we read your accounts of your experience. Yesterday sounds positively brutal;but you overcame the many obstacles and finished so very strongly. 33 BRAVOS! (But we won't insist on an encore ... not this year, anyway!) Now our prayers are for a safe flight home and a glorious reunion with your family, including Emily, of course! See you soon -- we've rented racoon costumes for the momentous occasion! Love and hugs, Nana

This was the most exhausting day today-worrying if you made it, looking for photo's of you (there was one of you with your back to camera walking through the tall grass but I had zoom in then go back to earlier stages to see if it matched your hat and back pack to see if it was you!) Needless to say I didn't get much work done today, Unbelievable accomplishment! You have no idea how many people were asking about how you were doing and rooting for you. So pumped up on how well you did too-I hope you realize that you were one of the best!!!! Still haven't seen the rest rooms though! Please enjoy the last day and rest up for your trip home. Again, I couldn't be more proud of you and I'm sure your proud of yourself for enduring such an amazing experience! Hopefully we'll get to talk to you tomorrow. Love, Dad-The Best Man-Grumpalump

Congratulations again! You did absolutely GREAT and we're all so proud of you. But after reading the blog, want to say, you are a glutton for punishment. I couldn't have watched you run this one! But it all turned out well and you should be very proud and happy. Especially happy when you get to the hotel tomorrow! Wish we all could be there at the finish line but we'll be thinking of you and there in spirit. Lots of love, Grandma

You should be so proud of yourself! I know we all are proud of you! Can't wait to call and hear all about it! one question tho- what's the first meal you want when you get home?! Safe travels home! Love you!

The leader board may say 34 but you're number one in our book. Great job Ryan, we are so proud of you and what you have accomplished. We look forward to hearing what your experience has meant to you. You have one long walk ahead of you, down the aisle and into the sunset with your lovely bride. See you then.

I wrote a nice long comment about 30 minutes ago but since it didn't show on the comments, realized I didn't include the security code so here's a shorter version. I'm telling everyone about you - the dentist's office yesterday; my doctor this morning - he asked how old you were and was amazed, he's the same age! Guess I should have put a sign on our front lawn. You are doing so great - 23rd in the standing is really something. Hope you didn't get hurt when you fell. Take care and we'll be thinking of you & praying too. Jim says keep up the good work. Lots of love, Grandma

Biblical Meaning of Numbers- The Meaning of Numbers: The Number 33 The number 33 is connected to a promise or the promises of God. The 33rd time Noah’s name is used in Scripture is when God makes a special covenant or promise with him. The Eternal promises to not destroy the entire world again with a flood and seals His pledge with the sign of the rainbow (Genesis 9:12 - 16). Thought this fitting for someone like you running this race through what must feel like "God's country" to me and Dad- BEAUTIFUL. By the time you get this you will have truly been blessed as you will have accomplisged everything you set out to do. Sending you a rainbow and love Congrats Ryan

I just blessed myself for you as you are now about 3 hours into the long run. Someone told me #33 is a special biblical # so God must be watching over you even if you don't think so!! We do :) You are kicking butt and making us all so incredibly proud to know you! All of you guys and girls running are amazing. I think Uncle Mike and his club need to run one of these as a team!! Love, Mom xoxoxo

No doubt you will have just a bit more soul searching on the long day however, you will come through with flying colors!!! Stay the course, one foot in front of the other ... we're all with you!!!

They think you are "The Man" and want you to come visit their classroom so they can meet you! That would be really nice- bring ur backpack. LOVE YOU and be safe Thurs. Hello All!

I made it back to camp about an hour and a half ago, so I'm recovering now. I did quite well today, as I'm writing this maybe half of the competitors are still out in the sun. I took advantage of the morning cool temps and tried to get as much distance in before it got too hot to run. I'm glad I did this since the whole second half of the stage was across flat baked desert ground and shrubs.

The course took us through rivers then huge sand dunes, it completely destroyed some people's feet- as for me I have two small blisters. The legs feel great but my poor shoulders feel that pack after 3 hours. The people are amazing and inspiring. Thank you for the e-mails I finally was able to read them and they are exactly what I needed. I even teared up reading them. Today I dedicated mile 16, 17, 18,19, and 20 to Andrew, Taylor, Dad, Mom, and Grandpa Gaffney to help keep me going. (Don't worry Emily- you get day 6 all to yourself) I even used Dad's favourite word- tough- to keep me going or when I mentally was complaining. Tomorrow I'll dedicate more miles to family J.

Overall the days are very difficult but I feel good and am recovering well from day to day- so far.

Thank you so much for the e-mails- they REALLY help.

PS- This tablet I'm typing on is terrible so excuse the bad grammar and spelling.

Ryan

Hello all,

I made it through stage one. I decided I needed to conserve my energy for the week and took it very slow. I didn't expect it to take quite as long as I did, the altitude really can tire you out quickly, so I did a lot of walking. The morning started off very very cold in the low 40s and possibly even 30s. We ran though severl different canyons and did more climbing than I anticipated. I ran with an American and Mexican runner through most of the course with a fair bit of walking. The American has done several of these races before and suggested I take it very slow for the first day to conserve my legs. I ended up being in the middle of the competitors.

The downside is I was in the sun longer than I anticipated and got a little burnt. Everyone is a little burnt in fact. The highlight of the day were these beautiful canyons I the beginning of the course, where we all found a rotting llama...The downside is a lot of the course today was difficult to run- due to very rocky terrain and I didn't want to twist anything on day one.The temperature is very cool overall so not too much sweating but its very dry so its still easy to become dehydrated. They still haven't downloaded the emails for us so I haven't had a chance to read anything. But you can comment on the blog too and I can read those sooner!! Emily- your stitching on the patches and bag are amazing and its holding well. I miss and love you!

Tomorrow will bring some river crossings- lets hope my water proof socks hold up!

Ryan

So happy to hear from you and relieved to see some photos of you on the website. So I can stop worrying for today. You were smiling at the start and when they caught you on the camera. Must have been the start. Be safe, go slow and enjoy! We are enjoying following you but this could become a full time job checking the website and FB and keeping everyone posted! GO RYAN!!! xoxoxox

Ryan,so happy to read this post and see that you are running this smartly. Today the water crossings are actually fun (at least I thought so.) Keep moving forward and know that everyone back here at Runwell is cheering from afar. Runwell out there!!!
