Truly an amazing performance, Aaron! Congratulations on conquering this awe inspiring experience. You've certainly earned a shower, a cold beer (or two), and the admiration of a lot of friends. Safe travels back to the land of debt consolidation and third mortgages!

Amazing. I knew you would suck the marrow out of this experience and have every emotion possible as well as the appreciation of them all. I'm with the rest of the crew:excited to hear the tales.

Without words, baby. I sense just the tips of your emotions through the Field, and echoing McGerking, Can't Wait To Sit And Listen upon your return. You have done something so unbelievable and poured your whole Self into every moment. Perhaps the best thing to do once this is done is begin planning the Next Big Thing. I love you with all of me. So grateful to be in this life with you.

Hey Friendo, heard you were off to a race. Just wanted to tell you good luck. We are all counting on you. Do well and I'll spring for a gluten free ham sandwich, a big box of zatarans jambalaya, and a couple michelob clamato ultras.

Ahh. There you are. Well, the dance is almost over, and I know, even though it's been at times grueling or worse, that you've left a healthy portion of your heart and soul spread over the miles you covered. We all are amazed, in awe, of your journey. ALL of it. And I know you will seek out tougher challenges in the months that come. Go for it, maiyng. You are blessed. You have what so many of us can only dream of having, and that is the utter confidence to attempt whatever it is you set your sights on. For that, you stand very very tall.

Harder than Advertised

Today was 44 km, or a bit above 27 miles. Everyone was talking about how much easier this stage was going to be, even though a bit long

Greeting Neighbor, That sounds like quite a jog! I surely don't have much personal experience running through hot, flat, salty, dry, dog-foreskin land, but I'm guessing it is a little harder than walking into every store at the outlet mall, wading through the ham-filled sacks of humanity. Sorry to hear about the fall, glad it wasn't electrified razor wire; hope the moccasins are OK. For a mental and physical challenge such as this, I think you are the right tool. Cheers!

The light at the end of your tunnel is brighter now, which is no doubt compelling. Glad you 'teamed up' through that stage, and I hope there are no more 'surprises' along your way, although you seem to be a magnet for them. I stood in the river yesterday, but my heart was out there on those scorching flats with you. You are awesome.

Wow. A test for sure, both mental and physical... I'm so sorry to hear about the barbed wire induced fall. Sounds like a monkey style superman? I hope you hip flexor is OK for the Long March today. Glad you were able to take it in with a fellow runner, great teamwork! Looking forward to your update from what's left to come. I love you, Aaron!

Hello my dear friend, Thank you very much for your writings to show us all how it is your runnings look like. Your Sahara-esk desert experience reminds me of a lot many times my strolls within the Sandy Desert of Rajasthan. I am imaging for you too, it must feel hotter than Ganesha's jock after an overtime cricket competition. May your internal wind propel you to the finish and I wish for Hanuman to lightly graze your cheek with his lucky banana while you are in slumber. Please enjoy an auspicious tomorrow.

As per usual, your latest triumph amazes/inspires me. And the way you chronicle your daily challenges is a fascinating read. I almost feel like I'm there; but of course I''m not, sitting thousands of miles away in front of my oatmeal living vicariously through you. Keep it going, maiyng!

Beautiful, Aaron! You amaze me-- your drive and love for the Edge. Even though you're not interested in competing, you're 12th overall right now. Shitballs, baby. All the besos from me and the cats.

Oh man, this was a hard day!! 27.6 miles with magnificent scenery and some of the hardest terrain I have run on. The seemingly endless freezing river crossings, the crusty salt, the epic amounts of sand, and the boulders were all huge challenges. Overall I felt great, until the last 10 k. I walked a lot of that, through the heat and over the crust. I found I could walk as fast as most people were shuffling, so I just did that. Finished third out of the people in my tent, which is very awesome for landing the best tent spot!! Tomorrow is reportedly the hardest day, and so I will probably take it easy. I finished I think in 11thor 12thtoday! Huge surprise considering I am not really interested in competing. No blisters, no chafes, but sore shoulders. So far, so good. I love this!!!!

This is an impressive showing after 2 stages! Agree with Phil, since you're "not really interested in competing," why don't you become interested so we don't need to search beyond the first page for your results. I'm not interested in competing either, hence my current location in an air conditioned office in the Northern Hemisphere. Sending you good vibes today! You're killing it!

Way to go, love! You are absolutely incredible. Top 10, hell yes baby. You are killing it. Love your positivity too; I can just feel your energy and joy in tempting your own limits. Good luck today, I can't wait to hear from you and read your updates.

Why don't you go ahead and keep running hard enough to stay in the top 10 overall? Then those of us watching vicariously won't have to expend that extra finger energy clicking to page 2. That would be great. Moistest Regards.

I just finished stage 1. I LOVE my pack. I have been run-commting to work with it for about 8 months, so I knew it and its limitations well. The good parts of the pack are its durability, the room, and the organization of the pockets. Downsides I feel are its weight, the straps can be less thn comfortable after 20 miles with 20 pounds -

Stage 1 complete!

Well, that was awesome!! I had so much fun out there, despite the enormous pack. I found that after a few miles my legs and hips relaxed enough to run consistently, and I felt great. The end was really really hot, but since there was only about 5 miles in the high temps it wasn

You rock, my friend! I'm checking results every few minutes, including when you're sleeping. Perhaps not the best use of my time, but I'm really excited to follow your progress. I hope the second stage went as well as the first stage. Seems like a pretty brutal way to spend some vacation time but clearly you're not normal. Can't wait to hear the stories while consuming large beers soon! Keep posting!

Day -1

Just arrived at the first camp a couple hours ago and trying to sort out what the heck I am doing. Everyone seems to be in the same boat, even the veterans. Starting to get a little chilly, now, as the sun goes down and the wind comes up. Its going to be a rough nights sleep, I think. We are all antsy to get running, tired of the waiting.

More tomorrow!

The mandatory equipment list is complete.

Almost all of my equipment has been thoroughly tested.

Still working on food, but only minor mods at this point.

After reading several blogs, recounts and having discussions with extremely experienced fast packers and backpackers, I have decided on a strategy for food. The post race includes:

Mountain House dehydrated food as well as Instant mashed potatoes and instant stuffing. This, combined with nuts and nut butters including Pocket Fuel, Trail Butter, and other things like jerky seem to be a good mix with some savory flavors and dense calories.

The mornings will include Pro Bars, Bonk Breaker bars, and tortillas with nut butter, as well as nuts.

During the race I will use:

Vfuel Endurabce Gels, GU, Sport beans, and possibly some other things thrown in. I also use Hammer Endurolytes Extreme for electrolytes.

I look forward next week to a long run overnight camping session with my pack to try out a few remaining pieces of equipment. Should be hot here in the California Bay area, and when I run up in the hills I expect a realistic desert running experience.

Hi Aaron - Enjoyed reading your blog:) I have a last minute hail mary favor to ask - I am two American flag patches short and am wondering if you have extras that I could use for the race? Happy to trade gels, electrolytes, beers whatever :) Thanks a million if that could work if not, no probs see you in San Pedro. Best, Zandy

The blog is having issues publishing, and I have already lost one entire post that I spent a half hour writing, so hopefully this works.
Here is a short list of the equipment I am trying this year as preparation for Atacama. I would appreciate any comments, suggestions, personal experience from anyone who has been through the event. I think the equipment is one of the more important parts of this sort of event because of the distraction that poor equipment can cause, and the mental toll.
Deuter Speedlite 30
Pearl Izumi Trail EM M2
Salomon EXO Calf Sleeves
Considering trying these: Elixier Arm Coolers
I think Abe Lincoln said, "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." Well, I am sharpening my axe for Atacama all year!

"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude."
Maya Angelou

I changed something this week. I changed my employment situation. I gave two week notice to leave my job here in Seattle, which surprised everyone, and now I am off to a new adventure in the San Francisco bay area. We shall see where I land.
In the meantime, I am increasing my mileage quite a bit in anticipation of my first 100 miler at the end of September. Its amazing how my body is responding positively. Mentally I feel ready, physically I have no idea what to expect!!!
I am learning that its tough to figure out how to train for these events. Everyone does it differently, and its very difficult to understand what to try and what is not going to work for me. There is only one way to find out!
