After a shocking night of no sleep and 5 toilet breaks (this means getting up off tent floor and tip toeing over the heads of my tent mates) woke up to another beautiful day in the desert. Gav and Col looking far too limber so we agree to run together and maintain a decent pace (8km) to the finish line. We bring Sir David Cox, one of tent buddies with us (he needs to maintain his position in the field and is happy for the company) and set off this time slightly later (10.00am) after an emotional goodbye to our last camp in the desert. 1st 100m is great comedy value as Gav and Col ease some blood into their toes but after that pace pick up and we cover the first 5k down a slight hill towards San Pedro in good style. Chasing down a Japanese lad in what looks like a Father Christmas outfit and the youngest competitor in the field (a lad called Alex from Gloucester who is only 19) all the way to the line. Big Gav controls the pace and i whinge a lot as we wind it up through the streets of San Pedro which get busier and busier as we head in towards the finish line. One last whinge from me about the strength of the pace and we put in a final burst towards the packed finish line in the local square. A medal each, pizza, beer, a band and the world seems a different place. Lots of grown men with tears in the eyes.....at last we've done it!!!!
Writing this with a post hangover stinger at the airport in Calama after a great night out in San Pedro. Awards, food, wine, beer boat racing, dancing, crying, laughing and arm wrestling all on the achievements list of the evening. One night in Santiago and then home.........
Thank you for your love, support and comments - i needed it!

Sorry abt lack of comms but felt awful after stage 2 as I took no salt all day and the reality is I need tobe banging those little capsules every hourout on the course. Day 2 was a tale of 2 halfs – 1st part stunning scenery including a gorge full of water that we ran down and a huge dune that we had to career down at great speed, youwould be able to do it on your snowboards kids – 2nd part was hotand dusty and salt cruddy and dusty and hot – big gav had early doors shocker but came steaming up behind us with about 5 k to go and then just kept going. Lost a few places but rapidly realizing this is more of a survival exercise. Had massive cramps when got across finish lineandhad toget somesalt down me quickly – took about 2 hours before I could take my socks off without cramping up….lesson for today…
Day 3 – billed as the toughest day on the course. 1st 20k across crudd/ salt pans/ dunes – fairly horrendous under foot at times – next 10k on sandy tracks – last 12k probably the hardest of my life – absolutely hanging out when got to finish line. Gavstrong again –col and I stuck together throughout. Boys in good form although few blisters flying around….day 4 tomorrow – lets hope it is easier than today…….
Hopefully catch up tomorrow……can this get any harder……

Day 1 tick. Made it to base camp last night at around 5 and made my first schoolboy error of being too helpful getting luggage off our bus. Net result was that I got the spot next to the opening in our 10 man tent – drafty and also prone to being stood on in the middle of the night!!!! MUCH REPACKING OF KIT AND HEATING of our first freeze dried meals later we all settled down to bed when the lights went out – the sun went down. Forgot to mention that we were in a stunning valley with a huge rock feature in the middle of it with the start line set up in the middle of a dry river/ lake. Lots of photos at the startline and everyone generally a bit nervous/ excite before the off – to be honest I just wanted to get on with it so that we can settle into a bit of a routine and stop talking about weights of packs/nutrition plans etc
Sunday morning – race day at last. Got woken up by colin telling me it was 6.30am so I sprang out of bed, very rocky one, and ran over to the fire to make sure I didn’t have to wait in a big queue for hot water only to find out that the time was actually 5.30am. managed to fill the next 2 hours with more kit packing and necessary cream/ Vaseline application. 7.30 race briefing given by a very posh chap called alastair, timing cards stamped, 3, 2, 1 we were off. Lots of adrenaline and enthusiasm saw a sprint start with our very own colin childs almost completing a 5 min mile and leading the field – slow down col…..first 7k was the highest part of the whole course at around 3300m. ALL GOING WAY TOO FAST …. Temp starts to climb as the sun comes up and we all settle down into our race pace – col has disappeared over the horizon chasing the leaders and I manage to keep in touch with gav who is going like a train. Four hours later, we all finish within about 20 mins of each other and a good hour behind the leaders. Good test of kit and nutrition/ hydration plan – all agree that we will take it a bit easier at the start tomorrow. All in good shape although col has a few blisters and gav has 1. In camp now and everyone chilled. Heard that it was 45c in death canyon today, a 7k uphill shocker, all looking forward with a little trepidation to tomorrow – 44k and a few river crossings. Bring it on.

Race is refreshingly multi-national - sat here at breakfast with Aussies/ Kiwis/ Japanese/ Frenchman and a Canadien. Everyone upbeat but a little nervous about what the next few days is going to serve up. Bring on the Slat Flats.....
Cazzie - beard is coming off today - my equivalent of shaving legs.
