Has anyone come across a suitable time keeping device (with gps for pacing) that lasts in extreme temperatures? Currently running on the Sunnto Ambit and the Garmin Forerunner 450 None of which lasted more than 7-8 hours in low temperatures (0- minus 5)..Suunto gave up after 50kms on Raid Nocturne ... and Garmin 'threw in the towel' after 70kms in Thunder Run 24..... even with all the bells and whistles turned off and running in low-voltage mode... ie the unit is barely breathing with limited vital signs... :) What is everyone else using for these runs? i cannot be the only one with this problem... pretty frustrating...

Hi Dylan - We posted this question on our Facebook page (facebook.com/RacingThePlanet) and received good responses, including: Polar with a separate GPA unit to ensure battery life, Garmin Fenix, Suunto Ambit, RXC3, Garmin 310. If you scroll down the Facebook page, you will see the conversation. Hope this helps!

Finished off december with a visit to Profeet on Fulham Road, London. A trip will worth it. HAving some arch support issues after Raid Nocturne... well after initial 50km of the race. The crew at Profeet were amazing. Particular thanks to Sarah. They did a full foot and stride analysis and fitted me with some inserts... they had new Asics Nimbus January 2013 colours in also.. they came with me. SO reaching 68 day countdown... lapsed my training after Raid Nocturne. I think i may have been overready for that race.. not to mention underprepared.. kit mismatch, weather mismatch.. just a general mismatch on all levels. thank god for those Gaitors at the last minute. ANyhow, im back to the gym and will commence cardio in early January. Not overly concerned at this point. Also signed up for Iceland 250 August 2013. Just about to do some altitude training for the next week or so. That along with the Hypoxic (Altitude) Chamber at Third Space www.thethirdspace.com matching some of the atmospheric conditions of the race. http://www.thethirdspace.com/home/fitness/facilities/hypoxic_chamber.aspx But first things first, lets get this 2012 out of the way... Sounds like you found some good resources to help with your preparation having had a reality check in Raid Noturne. Good luck with the final couple of months. See you San Pedro!

20 December 2012 12:38 pm (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

Setting training schedules and working out kit for the desert. I have been considering different kit combinations but after my bad kit choices historically ill be going safe. No Light & Fast for Atacama. Considering a 26-30l rucksack. Raidiight with a 12kg payload. Begin full kit testing January 1. 8 weeks before race. Feeling fully fit after my testing november and december but still not regained lost kgs. Christmas should solve that. Hitting some cross-training sessions with 2k swim and cardio... pretty easy pace. the endurance will come in the dark, cold, predawn mornings of january.
