Atacama Crossing (2013) blog posts from Peter Hill

After a month of being concerned with a pain in my thigh, my fears were confirmed last week when a scan showed a stress fracture in my femur and I have withdrawn from the Atacama Crossing on the advice from my doctor.

Terribly gutting news after training so hard over the past six months and was so excited to get out there and experience the unbelievable. I have found everyone to be so supportive which has certainly helped and it has made me more determined than ever to complete a RTP event. Not this time it seems but watch out Gobi, I have you in my sights :)

Good luck everyone, I hope it goes amazing for you all!

Well Mate, the sign of an accomplished athlete is one that listens to his body no matter how motivated they are to continue when pragmatism says stop. This is what we do, we ask our bodies to do things that the average Joe wont, so sometimes we have to spend a bit more time in the workshop fixing the machine. No shame in pulling out in fact quite the opposite. Get fixed & we will all see you on the next one...

Peter This is devastating news to say the least. I feel for you man. Keep your chin up. There will be another race again soon. Rest, relax, take care of yourself.

Just three months to go and the tension is starting to build up.

The training has been going well and steadily building up the kms although twisting my ankle on the trails last weekend hasn't helped. Has been getting much better all week so will put on the trainers and head out on Saturday morning to see how it holds up, should be back 100% within a week.

Next up altitude training in the Sydney Altitude Training Centre. It's pretty awesome if I do say so and really puts you through it, especially on the bike! Ah, so much harder than running! I will do one altitude session a week in the final run up to Chile, all part of the big training plan :) The weather in Sydney is starting to get rather hot now which is going to be great preparation for the real thing.

I also started fundraising this week for my charity, the Indigenous Marathon Project. Literally blown away with the support received in the first two days and hit $1k already. Nice one, just another $9k to go but feeling confident so all good.

This is also my first ever blog entry, happy days bro :)

Hi Peter, The Altitude Training Centre sounds great, my training definitely hasn't been that targeted yet.... Planning on getting a few hours in over this weekend though, to hopefully start catching up after things came a bit unstuck over Christmas/NY! I agree that the hot weather we've got now is good preparation, hopefully once we get there a 40C day will feel pretty standard! Looking forward to meeting you in Chile... Pip
