FA#A$A%A^A#R$R%R$K%K^K#K#K!!!! Finnished stage 5 last night with headlight on & threatening lightening & rain surrounding us as 8:55pm last night after close to 13 hours on feet, 1 step after the other. It would have to be the most physically gruelling day of my life consisting of nagging blisters on my heals, exhausted & painful muscles for at least the last 30kms, shin pain & a constant penetrating sun for 12.5 hours with no escape.

The day started off well with Ga, Raggy & I together through checkpoint 1, then Rag & I set off close to checkpoint 2 to tackle the rest of the 60 kms of the 74km course. We went well through up until the 2nd last checkpoint, 20kms from home, where we had a bit of a stop to eat & get electrolytes & water sorted. The stop however took away our momentum & the pain/exhaustion became apparent. The next 10kms were a real hard slog, with the sun sucking any energy we had left out of us, belting us from the right & then the left as we changed directions. During this stage we had to stick stricktly to the track as land mines were either sied of us, with everyone being assured prior to the day that the Chilean army had gone through to make sure no mines had washed onto the track with the recent rainful, but at that stage in the race getting blown up wasn't the worst of ideas. We got through to the final checkpoint filled up with water & set off. The message fom brain to legs was failing, resulting in a walking shuffle, with each step being more painful than the last & the previous being more painful than the next! This last 10kms took us over 2 hours, up & down a large ridge/mountain next to moon valley. It was full of cursing, shaking our fists at the sky & the occasional stumble to the side of the road.

We finally reached camp where it started to rain. Rag & I had a celebratory fist pump, which was not really a fist pump at all, more like a finger brush & some eye contact. In camp, so exhausted I went to the portaloos for a wee, whilst I was there the rain came down a bit harder, so I decided to wait it out in there, knowing the tents weren't waterproof. Don't know how long I was in there but I awoke sometime later, just before the tent had to send a search party out for me. Ga came in soon after, explaining how his walk had turned into a desperate run for survival at the end, as he tried to escape the lightening that had snuck up on him - "When Ga moves lightening stands still *old jungle saying". Dad, Conor & Billy came in midnightish, after being stopped for a breif time at the last checkpoint due to the threat of being hit by lightening on the last stage. But they got a break & took it on making it back safely. 30 or so competitors wwere picked up last night by a bus as it was getting to dangerous with the weather & given a chance to finnish it today, dropped back at where they were picked up from.

Today is a rest day (hence the large blog) at camp, where it is a case of the walking wounded, with blisters & infection being the number 1 problem. Anyway, 1 more day to go, only 11kms .... then a shower, clean clothes, real food, cool drinks & beers all round.

Jimmy and rags, maaaaagggnificent effort, sounds like it was hell. It reminds me very much of pistil and my journey on the long run in Kimberley, an absolute mongrel and can you imagine doing it without your partner saying one word the whole 100km!!!! You guys have done really well and deserve every beer and bit if fine food you can get at the end - if you can muster it at the end it would be wise to stop and soak it up as it all finishes really quickly and you will find yourself back in Perth before you know it. Cheers. Jp

Jimmy my heartiest congratulations on a tremendous effort by Rags and yourself and of course the rest of the team you can look forward to the cheers and beers when you all come home. Take care and patch up you should have all the skills necessary. Again well done. Peep18JJ

07 March 2012 07:50 am (GMT+08:00) Perth

Over half way now, hooley dooley. Spent today again with Rag, which is a lot better than travelling alone through the desert, with your own thoughts to haunt you, occasionally interupted by stubbing your toe, tripping forwards or rolling your ankle. Hardest part of  today was the never ending salt flats, only broken up by 2 of the event staff sitting out in a tent at 1/2 way giving us extra water, but this morning was great with a large canyon and more large sand dunes. Downside for today is my blisters are getting bigger, but checking out other people's feet, they don't seem too bad.

Camp today is situated on a mud flat next to 2 water holes, which has been great to actually have a swim / wash for the first time in 4 days & to be cool in the sun.

All the oldies finnished solidly this avo (don't need to worry Peep, if they were any better they would be dangerous), with Conor close behind.

Next stage is the 70+ km one, but the terrain will not be as hard as the last 2 days, just long .... really long. I'm glad I now have Steven Seagals career to think about tomorrow & how to steam hams.

Update tomorrow or the next day, depending on how long tomorrow takes.

Thanks everyone again for the support, it's long a long a gruelling event.

Jimmy

Now you've got more to think about than Steven Segal - just reading those last two comments. You and Patrick are doing it nicely - just get closer to those leaders in this long one - they're machines looking at those times. What's a farmer with a gun doing on a farm in the desert? Have fun and go for it!!

Broome taxi driver allegedly charged $150 for 30 cans of beer by: (Phil Hickey From: PerthNow March 08, 2012 11:08AM) A BROOME taxi driver has been charged after allegedly selling a 30-can block of beer to local Aborigines for $150. The 56-year-old cabbie is one of two people charged with unlawfully supplying liquor during a joint operation between the Kimberley Alcohol and Drug Unit and Kimberley police. It will be alleged the driver dropped off a group of indigenous people with the block of beer near the Broome Tourist Bureau yesterday morning. Police will allege the taxi driver sold the beer to the group for $150. A search of his taxi allegedly uncovered another 30 can block of beer and eight bottles of wine. The liquor was seized and the man was charged with the unlawful sale of liquor and carrying liquor for the purpose of sale. Meanwhile, a 71-year-old man was also charged after allegedly selling a group of indigenous people a bottle of wine for $20 on Broome's Male Oval early yesterday morning. Both men will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

06 March 2012 06:37 am (GMT+08:00) Perth

3 Down, today was by far the hardest terrain, with long flats, ground that was breaking up under foot, mud, climbing up steep sand dunes, loose flat rocks & trenching through valleys. Spent the first 10kms with Rag & Conor "Cannary" Gavin at a slow walk, but made up 60 spots when Rag & I decided to put a solid March on, reaching camp at around 2:45pm. Felt alot better today than the first 2, figured out the right mix of water & electroloytes. Dad, Ga & Billy also had a good day coming in an hour & a half after us, with Billy actually next to me typing as opposed to spewing out the back.

Conors struggling with dehydration, but help is at hand, he'll hopefully be back to form tonight before tomorrows stage 4. I'm quite stiff & sore, & my blisters I believe are getting bigger, but I haven't dared look at my feet under the bandages ... tomorows job. On the plus side being so tired has allowed me to get some solid sleep, even with all those noice coming from the 9 others in the tent.

Currently camp is on a large sand dune, with a nice view of the valley. There's a Chilean farmer down the bottom, who wouldn't let us cross his farm, so we all had to track an extra 4kms around, taking a short cut, we were warned, may result in being shot.

Thanks everyone for there comments ......... except Jembo. Will keep posting.

Superintendant Chalmers: The Aurora Borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within your kitchen? Principal Skinner: Yes. Superintendant Chalmers: May I see it? Principal Skinner: No. Principal Skinner: Superintendent, I hope you're ready for mouth-watering hamburgers. Superintendant Chalmers: I thought we were having steamed clams. Principal Skinner: Oh, no, I said, "steamed hams." That's what I call hamburgers. Superintendant Chalmers: You call hamburgers steamed hams. Principal Skinner: Yes, it's a regional dialect. Superintendant Chalmers: Uh-huh. What region? Principal Skinner: Uh, upstate New York. Superintendant Chalmers: Really. Well, I'm from Utica and I never heard anyone the phrase, "steamed hams." Principal Skinner: Oh, not in Utica, no; it's an Albany expression. Superintendant Chalmers: I see. [Chalmers takes a bite of the "steamed ham"] Superintendant Chalmers: You know, these hamburgers are quite similar to the ones they have at Krusty Burger. Principal Skinner: Oh, no, patented Skinner Burgers. Old family recipe. Superintendant Chalmers: For steamed hams. Principal Skinner: Yes Superintendant Chalmers: Yes, and you call them steamed hams despite the fact that they are obviously grilled. [shows Skinner the grill marks] Principal Skinner: Uh... you know... one thing I sh -... 'scuse me for one second.

Steven Frederic Seagal (born April 10, 1952) is an American action film star, producer, writer, martial artist, guitarist and reserve deputy sheriff. A 7th-dan black belt in Aikido, Seagal began his adult life as an Aikido instructor in Japan. He became the first foreigner to operate an Aikido dojo in Japan. He later moved to the Los Angeles, California, area where he made his film debut in 1988 in Above the Law. By 1991, he had starred in three successful films, and would go on to achieve greater fame in Under Siege (1992), where he played Navy SEALs counter-terrorist expert Casey Ryback. However both On Deadly Ground (1994, which he directed) and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) did poorly in theaters. During the later half of the 90s, he starred in three more theatrical films and a direct-to-video The Patriot. Aside from Exit Wounds (2001) and Half Past Dead (2002), his career shifted almost entirely to direct-to-video films (often low budget productions and shot in Europe or Asia). Between 1998 to 2009, he appeared in a total of 22 of these. At the age of 59, he returned to the big screen as Torrez in the 2010 film Machete. As of 2011, he's currently busy with the third season of his reality show Steven Seagal: Lawman. Seagal is also a recording artist and guitarist and the founder of Steven Seagal Enterprises. In addition to his professional achievements, he is also known as an environmentalist, an animal rights activist and a supporter of the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, and the Tibetan independence movement.

05 March 2012 06:04 am (GMT+08:00) Perth

Finished day 2 a few hours ago, with a lot more caution to water / electrolyte intake, which made today alot easier, although the day was harder than yesterday. The constant penetrating sun is making life difficult out here with no escaping during the run. I had a run with Rag & our Chilean mate from yesterday for the first section & a half, the Chilean dropped backed to a slow walk with another of his mates whilst Rag took off at his own pace. The rest of the stage I was by myself coming across a few competitors along the way (which was sometimes the only signs of life out here).

We crossed five river today (could have been the same river 5 times though) with the water coming up to knee height, with quite a current given the rains over the past few weeks. Running/Walking with wet feet however have caused a few large blister on the inside of both my heels that should be fun to deal with over the next few stages. The first checkpoint today was amazing, on top of a ridge that had a large troff of one side where a small river was passing through & a lot of greenery, contrast to the desert on the other side. This was followed by an enormous sand dune, that I went bounding down which was quite fun (if you could call any of this fun). Next was a canyon & large flat that would just not end.

Dad, Billy & Ga all just arrived at camp which is situated next to salt lakes, I think all very happy to have finnished. Although I just saw Billy walk past & is currently having a spew out the back of the Cybertent.

Update tomorrow

Jimmy

I got your email but no able to respond as its non reply address.

Textbook Bill Biffin. Good to hear you have figured the water/electrolyte stuff out. Tough break with the blisters. Poodles seems very sensible, but I'm liking the angle that Jez is taking. Keep on truckin

Good stuff J J! Don't take any advice from 'jembo cheap thrills Prendiville', if you do you'll end up blacked out under a tree around the 20km mark without any water after running straight through the checkpoint. Hustle it out - you've got all day. Catchyas

Who is Keyser Soze? He is supposed to be Turkish. Some say his father was German. Nobody believed he was real. Nobody ever saw him or knew anybody that ever worked directly for him, but to hear Kobayashi tell it, anybody could have worked for Soze. You never knew. That was his power. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. And like that, poof. He's gone

04 March 2012 10:30 am (GMT+08:00) Perth

Day 1 done & dusted. I spent this morning jogging with Rag, but let him free at the 2nd checkpoing (20kms), watching him run into the distance chasing down a Chilean competitor in front of us, whilst I remove pepples & bits & peices from within my shoe. I took it a bit more easier for the last 2 legs of stage 1. However, the heat / sun may have snuck up on me as I became dehydrated - resulting a chunder out the back of our tent an hour after finishing, much to the amusement of the other tent members. Still feeling a little nauseas & had a headache this avo for a few hours, but have been replenishing fluids & electrolytes & some food. It's like having a terrible hangover with out the fun of the night before (although we did have a celebratory bottle of Sandleford last night).

A large wind storm has come through the tent area as I write, that has been relentless, resulting in emergency stone collection to stabilise the tent's, as not be to be blown off the large cliff we are residing on. Everyone is in good spirits, just as long as the driest desert in the world doesn't dish up rain tonight. Hopefully I can get some sleep, as I am sleeping next to foghorn Billy.

I'll take it very cautiously tomorrow, make sure that I don't repeat the dehydration of today, will probably walk the mjority.

Better go the large metal pole holdingup the Cyber-tent I'm in has just been blown over narrowling missing a competetitor across the table from me.

Sensational stuff, and good you are doing medical experiments on yourself and seeing how far the body can go dehydrated....now you've established that benchmark you can keep the fluids up and avoid aforementioned yak! Tally ho! The Sydney Prendi's

Jim, keep up the good work! The vomiting i mean. Perhaps you should have taken more notice of my "drink water n stuff" advice. Liking how you are slowly taking out the other competitors via flying tent poles, the key is making it look like an accident. Keep powering through mate! Utilise that ipod! Quote for the day - "If you are getting tired, stop being tired and and be awesome instead." Goodluck for the next stage!

best of luck Jim! Id say your unbelievably conditioned! Your an animal of a runner. take it nice and handy and enjoy all the sights of the atacama.

28 February 2012 12:42 pm (GMT+08:00) Perth

Thought I would start my Atacama Crossing posts now that we're in South America. Arrived in Santiago yesterday with dad & uncle Ga after spending a relaxing weekend in Sydney with Katie (aunty) & the family (& 10 minutes with JP (uncle) who accused us of stealing his best wines & raiding his pantry). We managed to get through Chilean customs relatively unscathed, except for Ga who had his beef jerky confiscated, fortunately for him the mules (dad & I) brought extra. It's currently 5:30pm (11hours behind Perth) & we are getting our stuff ready to go to San Pedro in the morning (via Calama), where we will be meeting up with Pat (brother), Conor & Billy over the next few days. Will keep everyone at home updated with these posts over the next 2 weeks (race begins in 6 days). Got to go happy hour is about to start downstairs. Jimmy

Well Jimmy if you keep using that many brackets in your future posts we'll be in for a real treat. Good luck with your race, we all shall cheer your name. As for Perth news, David Serich has reverted back to his old ways, and we must once again address him as 'Meataxe'. John 'Kay Mann' Kissick got his best score of the season - 17 runs (caught on the boundary hooking), and Tom Mahoney eats pieces of shit for breakfast. Regards, John Bones Jones

Posted On: 01 Mar 2012 12:15 am

Jimmy, good luck on the race...I have no doubts you are more than fit enough to complete this event. Remember, avoid the first day impulse to race off "like a dog shot in the arse" - dehydration and mental woes are the result - just ask me, jembo (the horizontal star fish at the 20km mark), rag's (just one more bag of saline please) and the other dozen bodies that were left lying on the trail in the kimberley (some are probasbly still there?) good luck and keep us posted cheers
