Atacama Crossing (2012) blog posts from Clare Brownhill

12 March 2012 10:38 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

So its monday now, been back at the hotel since saturday afternoon to a comfy bed flushing toilet and of course the pool :-)
The last of the other competitors left this morning so its all quiet and pretty calm here now - it is truly strange how you all get thrown together and spent a week in such close proximity sharing such an experience and then within days you almost have to pinch yourself to believe it really happened.
So saturday morning the last 8km - complete with my new designer footwear courtesy of Inny we set out at 10am for the home stretch to San Pedro - the prospect of the finish, my much wanted oversized medal and pizza and coke kept us striding out towards our goal.
One further river crossing to come and armed with plastic bags I hoped to keep the feet dry - 50% success rate though thankfully theleft one which was worse stayed dry.... 3km later ish we turned a corner by a very smiley policeman and there was the orange banner and the familiar banging ofthe 4 Deserts drum - elated and with a sudden burst of energy and crowd encouragment Inny and I found some legs and a run...... sorry for the race Reuben - but you had us fair and square . I spotted Adam who had come to welcome us in frantically waving and screaming words of encouragement and then the line came and all the pain paled into insignificance and i jumped around like the lunatic that i am - hugging everyone i recognised and knew lol.
I have to take this oppotunity to once again thank my wonderful new friend Inny without whom I never would have made it through the week you were my saviour. Everyone else in camp - especially Jess Rog Matt Greg Ron Ronnie Kate Eric Eric Ann Diurmuid and who all helped and supported me on the grim moments when my feet nearly had it  a massive thank you.
Lastly to all my friends and family at home who have followed my progress and offered such wonderful words of encouragement everyday - i know you are all busy it is hugely appreciated - Matt and Ang you almost made me feel famous following me on your lap top likei was a sit com lol!!!
So the race finished the pizza coke cocktails and after party happened and there were hangovers a plenty but still lots of happy smiley people who came and conquered the Atacama. .......... so my work for now is done there is a lounger with my name on it and a sun tan to be topped up......oh and a couple of days to ponder over the next crazy challenge to enter (afterthe feet have recovered) xx

07 March 2012 06:39 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

So sorry last nights blog was short can now admit was not in a good place - really tough day and my feet were agony!!! Apparently it was the hardest day - till today lol!! The feet held up well today which was great then my piriformis (?) decided to rear its ugly head and walked from check point one in agony!!! Thankfully have had an elbow in it this evening and some NSAIDS so fingers crossed for tomorrow!!

Got back to camp to find it was right next to a small lake/lagoon and yes we got to have a dip it was BLISS!!!

Thanks for all the messages really keep me focused during the day through all the pain.

Lost a contact lens halfway between check points 1 & 2 which was interesting - but all sorted by the time I left again...... long day tomorrow start at 8am for the mammoth 70+km stint but once its done then just a little leg stretch on sat. Plan is continue steady and slow and push through - the end almost feels in sight but just going to take eachcheck point at a time. Likely no update till friday now as wont be in early enough tomorrow to get in cyber tent.

Any way keeping strong and sending much love to all of you, keep your fingers crossed for me. xx

Keep your chin up honey. You are doing amazingly!!! Get an elbow in there whenever possible (I can just hear the squeals from here) and remember to do the pretzel stretch whenever you can - it will stop it from cramping up so much hopefully... The hard bit's over and you're on the home straight :-) You were featured in the Aticama race update email today so you're famous now :-). Love and hugs. Claire xxx

Piriformis sucks dagnammit!!! I hope Inny has already invited you and your husband over to Reading to hear all about this amazing adventure. Best wishes, and hang on in there, Andy. P.S. Please telll Inny that Southampton drew with Ipswich, and West Ham drew last-night, Reading have won their last 8, and are now 2 points behind them both.

Well done!!, Elbows are good. A "Bliss"full swim is always good after a long day. Keep going not far now, as Dori would say "just keep running, just keep running" or walk, crawl he end is in sight. Love Donna xx

06 March 2012 06:15 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

Day 3 – done!!! OMG it was SO difficult – the terrain was once again a challenge and the sun baking hot. It was really difficult to get any sort of consistant pace. 40km today again wonderful scenery and managed to get some good pictures. Spent the day with Inny again really good support and needed it today.

Later finish today so the evening has been a little bit of a rush to get everything ready and get in the cyber tent before it closes.

The feet where not too bad today the pain was less than yesterday but just had to have my big toe nail trefined (basically they just stuck a needle through the nail to get rid of the blood etc – couldn’t bring myself to do it)

Off to bed in a bit as really exhausted. Thanks for all the messages they are really appreciated – it is the best thing to come back to after a hard day.

Promise to try to send some personal messages tomorrow.

Unfortunately Adam decided to pull out today – he is in good health and has done fantastically over the last 3 days but felt it was the right time – very proud of him and he really enjoyed it.

So all being well the next time I type it will be stage 4 complete.

Love to all stay safe and see you all real soon xx

Hi Clare. You don't know me and not sure whether you picked up my good luck message before you left. I ran the Atacama last year and have very fond memories that have come flooding back following this years race. You seem to be in great spirits and doing brilliantly well. Look after those feet - you'll need em on the long day! Enjoy every moment and dig deep. Good luck for the next few days. Grit your teeth. It's going to get tough but stay strong and do not (DO NOT) give in. It's all in the mind now!

Posted On: 07 Mar 2012 08:11 am

Clare well done, YUCK!!! to the toe nail, you know my feelings on them anyway. Well done to Adam, he did really well. Not too far to go now, Big hugs, keep going strong. xx

05 March 2012 07:49 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

So day 2 complete, 34.1km today. Three river crossings so the feet took a pounding - have a few blisters on blisters despite trying to take really good care and tape them - the terrain is tough!! Today started with running the river edge with the crossings a few hills and then we ran the top of a traverse it was truly beautiful got some great pictures - i think! The best part of the day was a massive sand dune - luckily down!! Ran from top to bottom truly awesome - should be some photos on the website.

The last 10km was hard - salt flats/rocks/sand/mud really difficult to get any momentum going. Stuck with Inny again it really is much easier to have someone with you who paces the same. One small wobble 30 minutes from camp due to foot pain and what seemed like the longest 3km in the world - but soon picked up and managed a run across the line.

Camp tonight is next to a salt lake - very picturesque and plan to go and soak my feet after blogging to try to perk them up a bit.

Despite my feet it was a great day, felt good in myself well hydrated and managing to keep energy levels up - it is just as expected HOT HOT HOT! Except for the flies!! Hoping they will disappear when it gets cooler but the portaloos are a little bit of a reminder of Op Telic 1 - yuck!!!

Adam doing well - also few hot spots to feet but in good spirits and we are supporting each other - even popped his blisters this am lol!!

Freeze dry food is going down surprisingly well, not sure my plan for a wicked tan and weight loss is happening - currently look a little raddish like and 'puffy' due to the altitude and sheer volume of fluids consumed.

It certainly gives plenty of time for reflection and perspective out here which can't be a bad thing! I have been thinking of you all and looking forward to seeing you all when I get back - you have all got me through various difficult spots along the way.

As crazy as everyone thought it was for me to attempt this it is already the best thing I have ever contemplated - the people are so friendly and encouraging - those that have finished all come out to cheer/clap you in which is such a boost.

So I guess its time to sign off for today and go give my feet some RnR - hopefully next blog tomorrow night at the end of another successful day - fingers crossed. Much love to all x

04 March 2012 08:26 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

Hello from the Atacama Desert - Thank you so much for all your messages so far - first time logged on today as yesterday it rained....again and they didnt set up the cyber tent.It made for an interesting first night in camp!! Now it is really windy and we have been rushing round putting rocks on the tent edges - not easy when its difficult to walk!

So end of day one - its been HOT i guess mid thirties and funnily enough not a lot of shade. Just 20ish miles today!! Ha! Have met lots of great people from all around the world - I spent my day with one of the other girls from the UK, Inny we kept each other motivated and moving. The scenery is truly awesome got some great photos but the terrain under foot is really difficult to cross.....not a lot of sand but loads of rocks mud and well more rocks. Managed to get away with one small blister so am really pleased - first 10 was really good last 6 really hard and hot but we got there and crossed the finish line in a reasonable time - im never going to be at the front of the pack!! lol

So off to eat some more freeze dried food and get into some warm kit - loving the jacket Tim - thanks for the loan has kept me dry and warm - i owe you a beer or a skittle bomb!!!!

So hope all is good at home - keep the messages coming please - have around 26 miles to conquer tomorrow and the plan is to get as much under the belt before the sun gets too hot - plan to stick with Inny and do our best. No injuries (touch wood) no lost kit - though have a rather fetching bit of micropore holding my sunglasses together after i stood on them this morning!!!

Any way lots of love and will stay in touch xxx

In any difficulty moment, try and conjure up an image of one or my chocolate brownies ...... might help? Might not, but it would still be nice to think of it. hahahahahahha Good wishes for tomorrow. Go Girl

02 March 2012 10:50 am (GMT-04:00) Santiago

So arrived safe and sound after over 24 hours of travel last night. Slept well and had good hotel breakfast - steadily working my way through several litres of water to hydrate - the altitude is not too bad - no headache or SOB so hopefully it won´t get any worse - well until I start running that is!! Oxygen sats were 98% this morning - result!!
Been for a walk around San Pedro this morning, interesting - lots of terracotta coloured buildings, little cafes, shops selling ponchos and various other Chilean style trinkets - place your orders peeps!!
The scenery into San Pedro - namely ´The Desert´is absolutely breathtaking and like nothing I have seen before - as of Sunday 8am (12pm) your time folks back home it will be taking my breath away and with it no doubt several toe nails, brain cells and hopefully 1/2 a stone at least ;-)
So my pack is down to 9kg but its still a bit bulky needs a little more organisation or bottom squashing action.......... we will see!!!
Anyway off for a swim while I can and a bit more water.... before dinner an early night and a day of briefings tomorrow. First post from base camp tomorrow. Adios for now x

29 February 2012 04:40 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

So here it is my last post (well depending on the internet access in Chile). Yes it is 12.30am, yes I have to go into work in the morning and you guessed it NO im not tired. I know I should be resting, after all have a mammoth journey to start tomorrow but the sheer scale of what little old me is about to attempt to undertake has become very real and just a little bit scary! Massive EeeeeK!
My bag is quite literally bursting at the seams - lets just hope it literally doesn't or there will be tears! Have had a lovely send off today, thanks to all the guys at work and in the mess for my great gifts - including the much talked about light weight foldable shovel complete with sparkles lol! My giraffe (thanks Mr & Mrs P) and of course the pork scratchings (ta Wend).
I would also like to say a great big thank you to Paul my trainer for all your imput and support - its been an awesome and intense year and to everyone who has supported me through my journey family/friends you know who you all are - Iove you lots and I hope to do you all proud.
So for now i'll keep it short and sign out............. see you on the flip side peeps!!! xx

27 February 2012 03:48 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London

So after spending several days looking at all my kit followed by moving it from one side of the room to the other I think I have finally packed. Having followed the kit list and then probably added as much in weight to my bag again I still have that sinking stomach churning feeling I have forgotten something really important!! No doubt at approx 2am i'll wake up and frantically rush around having remembered something else but then I think i'd probably be more worried if I didn't.
Indulging in a spot of crap tv whilst writing this, i am almost positive in a weeks time i'll probably be laying under canvas counting my missing toe nails wishing for nothing more than to know whats happening on 'The Street' or 'In the Square' (eventhough i dont watch them - honest!)
and so to bed to relish my memory foam mattress and pillow whilst I still can! Two more sleeps till travel day............night all x

Hi Clare, You don't know me either!! My husband is running this race too, Ross. He's a Kiwi who was in Sahara last year, and is currently repacking his bag.. I competed in Gobi two years ago and can honestly say it was an mind blowing adventure. I will be watching the race (and am also a fellow Brit) with eager eyes from Hong Kong where we live. One checkpoint and one step at a time was the biggest piece of advice I was given, as well as 'remember to look up every once in a while'. Do look up, take care of your feet and hydration and love every minute (even the painful ones). It's soon over..

Posted On: 28 Feb 2012 10:10 am

Hi Clare. You don't know me but thought I'd send you some good luck wishes. I ran in the Atacama Crossing last year and will be closely following this years race. As a fellow Brit and blogger, I'll keep a close eye on your progress - if you don't mind?! It'll be tough, damn tough but an extraordinary experience. I flew out to Chile this time last year for the race so all the memories have come flooding back. Don't be afraid, be excited, have an open mind and enjoy the experience. You'll see some mind blowing scenery and enjoy the company of some wonderful people. Look after your feet and dig deep. If you can be bothered and want an insight into the race then check out my blog from last year. Having said, that'll spoil the surprise - so don't bother. All the very best. You'll love it!

It was inevitable, the panic was always going to set in!! Over the past few days I can honestly say I have felt ready to go and been anxious but excited  - except for keeping the legs moving clocking a few miles, some gym a bit of cycling and swimming the hard training is done - well if it isn't its a bit late now
But over a coffee with my parents earlier discussing the finer details of my trip a strange feeling came over me........it was plain and simply SHEER PANIC what have I let myself in for!!!!
What if despite all my lists of lists I forget to take something really important, what if despite the route being marked out I get lost and am left in the desert..... where nothing lives!!!! (im sure someone would notice, wouldn't they??)
Oh well it could be worse..... what if after hundreds of years of the Atacama being one of the driest places in the world it suddenly started raining and it might continue during the race ......................but wait I forgot thats exactly whats happened.... you've got to laugh really well that and consider taking an anorak!!
But for now anyway I shall attempt to put my panic aside for 80 minutes, and enjoy a beer with my dad and brother and hopefully watch England pull there finger out and play some decent rugby........ which begs the question who would you rather put your money on England for victory or me surviving the Atacama. x

Can't quite believe that the week is over already, now only 5 days till the travelling begins. Keep looking at all my kit and wondering how its all going to fit in my rucksack..... perhaps rather than just looking at it I should actually try!!! ;-)
No training today, had a little work do send off last night - will power broke and the wine flowed. Back on the detox now.
Drop the dogs off this weekend with the folks for there 3 week holiday something tells me they'll have a slightly more relaxing time than me. Well off for a few more pre-race goodbyes and a nice home cooked meal courtesy of the Phillips Family.

Finally got my finger out and started my blog!! Last training session with Paul this evening - a year of wednesday evening sessions, training programmes and advice has gone by very quickly. Next time I see him will be on the other side - quite emotional really but as always wonderful words of encouragement - definitely be buying the beers when im home.
Training was followed by laying out the kit and mulling over endless freee dried packets debating if the right menu choices have been made. Time will tell! All becoming very real now 1 week today will be in the skies en route to Chile - secretly very excited.

WOW Claire! I can't believe how quickly the time has gone and you only have 10 days to go. Just the training programme you've done is something to be proud of! Take care of yourself - lots of stretching and take care of your feet! Look forward to hearing all about it on your return. Xxx
