24 February 2012 11:40 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London
I sauntered into our living room to find my wife looking at the Official Competitor’s List in despair. She turned around and said “your bib number is no longer 88, Love. It’s now 86!!” I roared with laughter at the cause of her despair. You see, for the past few weeks, she has noticed my bib number changing periodically from the initial 99 to 91. Over dinner one day, she mentioned how nice it would be if my bib number is 88, for in her Chinese culture, the number symbolises not only good fortune but also very good luck! She was ecstatic for a day, I think, when I reached 88. Now I see that the auspicious number has gone to my tent mate, Massimo Passamonti. What a lucky guy!
Anyway, by now, most of the food, equipment and gear which I have ordered have arrived and I intend to pack everything into my backpack and bring them as a carry-on luggage on the plane to avoid the stress of having them not arriving with me when I finally land in Calama.
As advised by the organiser, I have decided to carry my food in their original packaging due to Chile’s strict regulations on bringing in food to the country. Once in Chile, I intend to transfer them into Ziploc bags to save space and maybe a little weight. I am hazarding a guess that I will be able to pack everything in a more compact manner once I remove the bulky packaging of some of the stuffs, especially those of the freeze dried food. I have done some experiment and found that they rehydrate quite well even in Ziploc bags. So, I think that is what I will do.
I can see that trying to pack everything into my backpack will be a nightmare. Even the food alone is taking up so much space already. I sorted out my food on a daily basis and they look like this : With the transferring into smaller and more compact packages once in Chile, I reckon I will be able to squeeze everything into my daily airlock bags. Crossing my fingers for that!! After having sorted out the food, I moved on to sorting out my mandatory equipment and suggested gear. I will be using the OMM Classic Marathon 25L and here is a photo of all my essentials (without the latest mandatory waterproof liner for my backpack) : But seriously, the high spirits which has been building up in me steadily for the past few days really took a deep dive at this unexpected news. To be honest, I have looked at the weather forecast weeks ago before the arrival of Alina’s email, where rain was forecasted during some days of the Race. I took that forecast not only very lightly, but highly suspiciously. I remember telling myself then, that the forecast cannot be right. After hundreds of years of no rain, it cannot be possible that rain will finally arrive during the time I will be there, surely? I can imagine how my friends will be rolling on the floor with laughter once I tell them about this impending 'Rain in Atacama'. I really have to brace myself for all my future meetings with them because I am quite sure that with this latest episode, the crown of the Rainmaker which has been bestowed to me will most certainly stay put on my head for many years to come and my unenviable ability to bring rain will be discussed, repeated and laughed at incessantly. Sigh!!! Why? Why? Why? As if I do not suffer enough of rain already in the UK!! To rub salt to my wound, UK is, by the way, currently experiencing some very pleasant Spring-like, sunny weather with temperatures rising to double digits, which is again, quite unexpected for this time of the year!!
After packing them into individual bags rationed for daily consumption, they look like this :.jpg)

Weather wise, the Big Freeze of the UK has been replaced by the Ferocious Gale and Slapping Rain at the beginning of the week. Due to that, I did my training on the treadmill yesterday with my 8kg backpack, complete with my sunglasses and Sahara cap!! Thank goodness nobody was at the gym when I was there because I am quite certain I would have given them a big shock with my weird ‘desert appearance’. I was really excited with the prospect of being in the dry and hot Atacama until Alina’s devastating email arrived today, bearing the news that the Driest Place on Earth is now experiencing unheard of amount of rain!! I am very certain this phenomenon is happening because I am going there!! Yes, I have been known as a Rainmaker among my friends for as long as I can remember. They have often accused me of bringing rain with me wherever I go, even to places where rain was to be the least expected for.
I just hope that all that has happened has nothing to do with me not carrying the number 88 bib
!!

13 February 2012 03:58 am (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London
It snowed in our area over the week and one of the daily newspapers declared that UK is on its way to ‘return to the Ice Age’. I was rather delighted as I thought if we have enough snow to carpet the grounds, I will have a chance to do an ala-Atacama training, imagining the snow to be the salt and sand which I will encounter there!
Alas, my hope was dashed. Not only was I called to work extra hours, the snow quickly turned to hard frost and widespread ice under the sub- zero temperature before I even had the chance to run on it!! Training has taken a back seat when it should have been speeded up a little, given that it is now only about 3 weeks before the Race!! This is surely getting me a little nervous. We have been looking at a frozen lake (in front of our apartment) for the past week and the forecast of another Arctic blast to come is definitely not a very comforting one. Here’s a look at our frozen lake when it first snowed :.jpg)
Icy or not, I told myself I have to do my last long run before the Race by the end of the week. I have been doing the ‘graveyard shifts’ the whole of last week (20:00-08:00) with the exception of Saturday and Sunday, when I worked from 18:00-02:00. So, I had planned to have a good sleep after my shift on Saturday and do my long run on Sunday morning before starting my shift again at 18:00.
Due to the change in my sleeping hours, my biological clock was thrown into a state of confusion (as it often does) and I found myself wide awake at 06:00 on Sunday, not being able to continue my sleep despite all my effort to do so. I loaded my backpack and got ready for my intended 50km run along the Rochdale Canal, starting from Halifax, a town near where we live, all the way to Manchester.
The Rochdale Canal is a navigable canal in the northern part of England and it runs for about 51km across the Pennines. I have run along this route many times for my long training and I enjoy the relatively flat terrain, crossing many picturesque villages, farms and beautiful hills.
I set out at about 08:00 in high spirits. I have been looking forward to this training as I have not been running much at all the whole of last week. However, when I reached Rochdale Canal, I was in despair. Not only did I find the canal to be completely frozen, the track along it was also equally frozen. It felt like I was walking on a wet ice-skating rink!! I was faced with a dilemma and knew that I had only 2 options at that point in time. I either continue with my run and risk a fall and therefore, compromise my impending participation at the Race or alternatively, I turn around and go home and be frustrated for the rest of the day and days to come for not doing my training.
I made a calculated risk and decided to carry on running. I reckoned I could always stop when things get out of control. So, in addition to having to run cautiously in fear of being chased by dogs (or horses or cows, for that matter!), I also have to be extra cautious this time round of the very treacherous icy track. Oh! Speaking about being chased by dogs - after having written my last blog, I happened to read the blog by last year’s winner, Anders Jensen, who mentioned that he and runner-up Martin Chinchilla Gioia were chased by some stray dogs at a remote village they ran through in Stage 4 of Atacama Crossing 2011. Sigh!! Guess I will not be able to escape from the possibility of being chased by dogs after all. Even in Chile!!
For about 15km, I was doing quite well at balancing myself perilously on ice and saving myself from slipping on numerous occasions. The route which I ran through was rather deserted as it was simply too freezing for anyone to be out and about at that early hour. So, I was concentrating more on looking at my feet and the ground where I was about to step on. Due to that, I was not aware of the presence of 2 rather innocent-looking geese ahead of me until when I was about 20 metres away from them. They were blocking my narrow track. I stopped and waited for them to move away, as I thought that is what the bird species always do when confronted by human. But then again, who am I kidding, right? This is me we are talking about. I have now come to the conclusion that I am a magnet to animals. My mere presence will somehow attract them to be near me, not affectionately, mind you, but quite the opposite, I am afraid to say!
Well, that was what exactly happened with one of these supposedly innocent geese. As I was standing there waiting for them to get out of my way, one of them began to duck her head and charge towards me. That really took me by surprise. I moved backwards in such haste that I almost slipped and fell. I found a fallen branch nearby and used it as my ‘weapon’ to shoo them out of my way and managed just about to squeeze pass through them on the narrow track.
After this unexpected encounter, coupled of course with the treacherous condition of the track, my high spirits at the start of the day has now descended into a not-very-likeable black mood. The fact that I have only had 3 hours of sleep further aggravated my mood. I was beginning to get very tired having to do the balancing-on-ice act and decided to leave the frozen track and head for the hills, hoping that I will be able to benefit more from my training there.
I soon found out that the hills were not so much better than the track. I was practically sinking my feet into mud up to my ankles with every step I took to get up the hills. The higher level of the hills was covered in half snow and half ice. Everything was getting really depressing and I was not enjoying myself at all. Despite all that, I gritted my teeth and continued running up and down the hills as I kept telling myself that no matter what, I have to complete my targeted distance for the week.
After about 25km of going up and down the hills, I was completely destroyed. I could not carry on anymore to reach my targeted 50km. I have, by then, run out of glycogen and was feeling extremely moody and tired. I decided to head back home to get some rest.
As I am writing this, I look back at my training yesterday and feel a great sense of relief. My Garmin recorded that I did 41km in total with 1600m altitude of ascent. I have finally completed my last long run before the Race. I will now do only some interval trainings and short runs (max 20km) and pray that the weather will be more agreeable with my training from now on, though I seriously doubt that will be so. Go away Big Freeze!! I need some Atacama Sunshine !!

I love running here because the terrain consists of rough and slippery trails, hills, steep and muddy slopes and some mind-blowing landscape views. However, I often have to run cautiously and this, I feel, disrupts the total enjoyment of my training. You see, there are many dog lovers in Barkisland. Many of them walk their dogs along the route which I run, which I have no problem with. However, some of them do not put their dogs on leashes. There were a few occasions where I have been chased by these overly excited dogs which somehow prefer me to their owners! When this happened, I can always hear their owners calling after them to stop but to no avail. I have tolerated this crazy charade until an incident which happened to me recently.
Over the Christmas and New Year holidays, we were in Athens to celebrate the festive season with my family and close friends. Almost all my friends are runners like me. Hence, it is very usual for us to meet and catch up with one another not through a cup of coffee, but through running. While running with them one day, I was bitten by a stray dog, quite viciously, I must say, because it left me bleeding from the tooth marks which were deeply embedded in my “juicy” calf! This unpleasant incident has left me very paranoid and weary of the Barkisland dogs these days. Just a few days ago, I was arguing with an owner of some unleashed dogs which were again, chasing me (surprise! surprise!). He very adamantly told me that his dogs will not bite when I confronted him. I mean, how would he know that his dogs WILL NOT bite? How can he be so sure??
So, you see, this is the reason why I had to run cautiously nowadays in Barkisland. Well, while I was doing exactly that yesterday, with my ‘alert’ radar fully switched on to monitor whatever movement which is coming from the back of my head, I suddenly sensed movement. In fact, I not only sensed it this time, I even heard it, which is quite unusual. Not the small quick steps of some barking dogs, but the heavy, confident gallops of horses!!! Not just one, but it sounded like there were many. The hair on the back of my neck began to stand and I panicked. I froze. I told myself : “That’s it! I am going to be run over them. I am going to be injured or maybe dead. Bye-bye Atacama!!” The horses were by now getting closer to me, I could see their shadow fast approaching. I stood where I was and said a little prayer and closed my eyes.
They galloped past me but suddenly stopped about 50 metres in front of me. When I realised that I was untouched (and still alive), I mustered enough courage to open my eyes s-l-o-w-l-y. There, right in front of me, were these magnificent, handsome creatures – 1 blackish-brown and the other, brown. They turned their heads slowly towards me and gazed intensely into my eyes. For awhile, I was there, staring at them and they, at me. After about 2 long minutes, both of them decided to turn around and started galloping back towards the direction they had come from.
I gathered myself and started trotting, er, I mean, running again...That was so amazingly surreal !! Of all the time I have been running around Barkisland, I have been chased by dogs and one time, cows (!!!) but never horses. Through the remaining of my run, I kept on re-playing the sequence of the encounter in my head and asking myself – why did they stop to look at me? Did they think I am one of them and then realised that I am not when they looked at me from the front? Why? Why? Why???
That night, I dreamed of Pegasus :-) I was actually flying :-)
P/S: I managed to find a photo my wife had taken of these 2 horses last Spring. I recognise them as they belong to a neighbour not far from where we live and also from the distincitve white marks on the bridge of their noses (is that what you call them?) ...Here are the beauties :

I have only started running again in 2010 after my last big race in 2007 where I suffered a severe injury. The psychological impact of the injury on me has been so tremendous to the extent that it had put me off running completely for a whole 3 years!! Like a child who begins learning to take his first few steps, I started to tread cautiously (initially) before progressing to run through the beautiful English countryside trails around where we live in April 2010 (when the weather decided to be nice and generous). The joy of being able to do it again was overwhelming and indescribable. I have not stopped running since!
How have I prepared for Atacama 2012? What equipment have I bought for the Race? What food? What clothing? I am afraid I am not very savvy when it comes to "Preparations-before-the-Race" and had only just very recently ordered most of the stuffs which are recommended by the organiser website from RacingThePlanet Outdoor Store. My wife went berserk when I told her that for the Marathon des Sables which I participated back in 2006, I only received my rucksack and most of the mandatory essentials in Paris one day before leaving for the race in Morocco because my Parisian friend has kindly purchased all the things on a list I sent him in cosmopolitan Paris, which I could not at that time find in Greece.
This attitude of mine has got my wife more nervous than me as she has been reading the blogs of other competitors who have discussed about all the equipment and essentials in earnest. It was the nagging (sorry, Wifey!) which has got me going and I am now glad and grateful that it did, because I soon realised that the mandatory list of equipment is quite a lengthy one! So, having bought most that are necessary and mandatory, I can now concentrate solely on my training.
I do an average of 90 km per week and I was quite happy with my training until one day, Wifey asked me as I was piling on layers of clothes for my run in the now icy and slippery trails around our home : "why is it that you are running without your rucksack when other competitors are training with theirs, packed with all their gear and essentials?" Arrrgh!! She has been reading the blogs again!! I told her that I will certainly do that nearer the time of the Race.
So here I am now, with only 34 days to go - a full rucksack on my back, complete with water bottles and energy bars etc. etc... running through the ferocious rain, splattering on my face and the vicious wind, howling at a merciless speed of 50mph. With each step that I made, I found my feet sinking into 5-inch deep mud and my balance therefore, dangerously affected and my movement, highly restricted!! And there in the rain, with Lesiem
