Better late than never (unless you need a defibrilator, but that's for another blog)...

Stage 5, affectionately known as "The Long Day", could also be know as the "I-cooked-my-poor-shredded-feet-in-my mangled-shoes" day or the

Greetings from an icy tent on the salt flats of the Atacama. I have written this passge 4 times so far and each time the computer boots me out before I save it, so if this does not make it, I am outta here and back to the fire. I spent the day at checkpoint 2 today, the last stop before the dreaded 14km crossing of the salt flats. Salt flats are apparently very treacherous. The bits of crusted salt are sharp and can shred boots, socks and ankles alike. The athletes spent alot of time procrastinating at our checkpoint before heading into the flats.

Dr. Brandee, I live for the blogs to know what is happening. Since there were 7 earthquakes in the area prior to your arrival and the major quake in southern Peru, I liked knowing that no one was falling into a bottomless pit on the race. I hear a lake disappeared in So Chile. Moms with only children always like to know their child is in safe hands. Its nice to know Mike is meeting such wonderful people and still doing his job. I still don't understand why people want to run thru deserts for that many miles to get broken bones , lose toenails and have monster blisters. I have heard the " No pain. No gain."words before, but I still don't understand. I bet none of them need to lose weight either. Well take good care of my son. Best wishes to all! May there be no major medical needs. God Bless !

Claudia Perez
Chile

Pd: Muchos abrazos a quienes me esperan en casa...
