Hay all

Well thanks to those of you sending me email it does make the day a little easier. The day started out pretty strong and then came the 3rd stage across the salt flats. It almost killed me but still managed to finish 25th .

Hi James Welcome to Atacama! This will only be my 2nd desert (I did Sahara last year) but I know a few guys who have done a few more deserts. There's lots of good info in previous competitors' journals and if have any questions, the Atacama Forum is a good place to start. All the best in your training and look forward to seeing you in San Pedro. All the best Gary B

Hi James, I'm also still having quite a dilemma with my shoes. I put a message and poll on the Atacama forum about this. In 14 days that the poll was up and running, 6 out of 7 people said TRAIL shoes. HOWEVER, the one person that said road shoes was Mary Gadams - and she has probably seen a few battered feet in her time! So, I have opted for the Asics Gel Nimbus 8. They are a little harder to come by now as version 9 is now out (I got mine from www.sweatshop.co.uk - great website). But version 9 for me is not supportive enough and when I had my gait video analysed it wasn't giving me the stability of version 8. I will be wearing the RTP gaiters with this to stop stuff getting into the wide mesh on top of the shoe. I've only bought half a size bigger as I think the water crossings + airing the feet at night will stop feet swelling massively and they only need to have room width-wise, rather than legth-wise and the Asics are quite roomy already. So... I might change my mind again, but for now, these are what I'm going with. Good luck with the shoe shopping - for the first time in my life this passtime is stressing me out! Catherine
