29 April 2008 12:35 pm (GMT+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore
We were being dispatched into three different groups. The rear group started off at 10 am, the middle pack at 11am and the cream of the Atacama crop at 12 pm. I belonged to the middle group which made up the main bulk of the surviving competitors. I thought the idea of putting the fastest pack to be the last group was very smart. In this way, slow runners like me will be able to cheer for these fast runners coming into the finishing line, like they had done so to me in the last six days.
The last 9.7 km to wrap up the Atacama Crossing 2008 was a breeze. I ran most of it, as with everyone else. I wondered what was the motivational factors other competitors had in this last stage. The pizza and coke screaming for their attention at the end point were definitely my main source of support. I was hungry but my legs were eager to bring me across the finishing line.
I knew I was near when I saw civilisation around me. I ran past locals and greeted them “Hola” with such zealous attitude and they reciprocated with wonderful and radiant smiles. Others replied with a long string of Spanish sentences which I reckoned were words of encouragement.
I kept running and suddenly realised that the surroundings looked very familiar. When I turned into a small alley what I could see ahead of me was the massive bright yellow banner and a screaming crowd made up of the locals, my fellow competitors, volunteers and staff whom I have built wonderful friendships with in the last six days. I quickened my pace. I could hear people shouting my name and cheering for me. I was nearly in tears. I was overwhelmed. Any pain I suffered, any aches I was bearing and any hunger I was undergoing all vanished into thin air.
I jumped for joy when I crossed the finishing line. I hugged anyone within my reach and I was screaming with joy. Mary, the CEO, presented me this huge heavy medal and put it over my neck. This triumph feeling was nothing I had experienced before and this winning sensation was amazing and I loved it! It was then I knew that this was not going to be my only race! Back in my mind, I was already planning to set myself another goal!
RacingthePlanet is awesome!!!

I clocked in the furthest non-stop walking distance in my life today, walked over 73.5 km on varied, disgusting but scenic terrains. The longest march I have ever done but I felt accomplished reaching the campsite with cheers from the organizers and some of the competitors.
I started at on 3rd April and reached campsite at around on 4th April. The only time I stopped was at the five different checkpoints (briefly for about 5 to 10 minutes each time to fill up my water bag and grab something light to eat), two pee breaks and quick change into my warm attire for the night walk. In total I would have walked continuously for 16 hours, less the breaks.
This long march started with yet another 7 km of horrible salt plains where I was hoping my shoes, which were tattered from the previous salt plains crossings, were able to hold up. Fortunately they did not give me any problems. Neither did I receive any cuts for my little toes were rather exposed from the damaged shoes.
The terrain was more comfortable and flat to walk and jog on after the salt plains. I managed a brief jog. Holding my darn camera in my hand did not make the run easy but I certainly enjoyed taking pictures of the superb surroundings and other competitors who ran passed me or those whom I have overtaken.
The morning sun turned into fiery fire ball blasting its heat wave across the entire desert. Thank goodness there were some brief clouds to save us from the heat. The terrain turned nasty again after the second checkpoint. We were made to trek up a massive sand dunes, which I reckon was about 200 metres and inclined at a 60 degree angle. I swore, I pant and I crept my way slowly to the top. I turned around and was stunned by the splendid view.
It was by the time I left the third checkpoints and the sun was hovering above the horizon. I set off for the last 32 km walk. The cold set in as the sun set behind the horizon. Changed into my warm attire, I continued my solo walk into the dark.
I was reluctant to turn on my head torch in the dark for the fear of attracting any hungry predators in the vicinity. It was only when I started to trip on rocks and lose my balance on uneven grounds that I decided to make myself visible in the pitch dark desert. I felt kinda of dumb when the staff at the next checkpoint told me that there were no wild animals in this region.
I walked alone in the dark for hours without seeing any life. I kept walking. My stomach was groaning I was hungry but I kept walking. Millions stars glittered in the distance afar and occasional shooting stars to cheer me on. I walked and walked. It was pitch dark but extremely peaceful; perfect time for self reflection. The battery on my GPS watch was drained and I did not have any timing device to keep track of time. I could not care more about time. I did not need one. All I wanted was to keep walking and complete this long arduous stage.
Millions of thoughts ran through my head. The entire desert and tranquil night belonged to me and I loved it! I continued my slow walk and took time to reflect on myself, my life and my future. It was in this part of the race that I have discovered and/or rediscovered my strengths and weaknesses. I have definitely learnt more about myself. This is exactly one of the main reasons why I signed up this race for.
I hit my sleeping bag shortly arriving at the campsite. Too tired and exhausted to have my meal. The race is about to complete. All we have left with is the remaining 10 km to run into San Pedro town tomorrow. I cannot wait to have a beautiful sizzling steak complemented with a glass of chilled Chilean wine for lunch tomorrow.

For over 50 years the sun never fails to shine; for over 50 years, the residents in the desert have not experienced any rainfall. Today we had one powerful wind storm that blew away some of the tents in the campsite; today I walked head on against strong icy wind and was partially drenched from the light rain. I shivered as I only had my short sleeve tees and shorts on, and raced on quickly to keep myself warm. Glad I made it to the campsite to find warmth by the campfire. Moved up my ranking 2 grades and came in 29th today.
Today was meant to be one of the toughest stages of the race. We had to cross the most horrible terrain – the sickening and disgusting salt plains. You can never imagine how difficult it was to cross this 8 km of salt plains in scorching heat. Walking on the salt plains was like stepping on million pieces of broken glasses, uneven pebbles and hard rocks at the same time. Parts of the salt plains were so soft that I could hardly find balance and sank my feet into it; otherwise they were so hard to make walking miserable. Such terrain was really detrimental to our knees and ankles. I slogged painfully through the massive salt plains with such difficulty. The thought of giving up did cross my mind. My shoes were badly damaged; my knees and ankles were nearly giving way. I was overwhelmed to complete this stage.
Tomorrow is going to be another tough and long race. We have to complete over 73 km! I hope my shoes remain intact for this long march!

I did relatively well today; came in 31st out of about 71 competitors. Unlike the previous days, I actually kicked my arse to run today. The unforgiving sun continues to beat on my tired legs and aching shoulders. The sceneries, though not as magnificent as yesterday, did offer me some excellent shooting opportunities and I took over a hundred pictures today, I think.
Seriously, this race is not about who has the biggest muscles or longest legs. It is really a mental challenge than anything else, but of course physical fitness is still necessary. I struggled to keep in pace with two petite Japanese girls who stayed ahead of me most of the time until after the last checkpoint. They decided to take rest at the checkpoint whereas I pushed ahead to keep abreast of them. Not that I was proud to beat the girls, those on the top 10 are aged 40 and above. A sense of shame and guilt did cross my mind for I reckon I am just too comfortable with my lifestyle back home in . I am definitely more inspired to do some serious training after this race, perhaps aimed to do the
Emotions ran high when the Korean father (who is blind), lead by his son, ran across the finishing line. This stage must be really tough for them. I personally found that the terrains today were unforgiving. We had to cross the uneven and spiky salt plains, which were one of the most horrible terrains to walk on, and climbed (on fours at some point) a steep cliff to reach the campsite. I struggled myself to overcome these difficult terrains, it must be really awful for the Korean father to go through what I found hard to accomplish. I am truly amazed by his determination and strong will power to complete the race.
Tomorrow is going to be another tough day for all of us which includes a 14 km salt plain. It is not physical fitness to bring us across the finishing line, mental toughness is key to stay in this race.
Wish me luck!
Cheers,
PJ
PS: For those who have sent me emails, I have very touched with your encouragement! For those who left messages on the blog comments, I apologise that I could not read them for the campsite is not wired. I will read them when I return to civilization this Saturday. Nevertheless please keep the emails and blog comments coming.
I am definitely darker than before I left home, but just not sure if I have shed off any fats. We shall see. Take care!

I was so deeply asleep last night after dinner. I must be really tired to slept 8 hours straight without being woken up. The day started off beautiful and everyone remained in high mood.
Like yesterday, we were flagged off at . The sceneries in this stage were indescribable! We went up high mountains (which totally sucked!), rolled down sand dunes, made multiple river crossings, trampled inside beautiful river canyons (which was totally cool)! The river canyons were just amazing. I must have shot over 100 pictures just inside the river canyons.
When we were told of the river crossing and how icy cold the waters were and how badly we may develop blisters, I dreaded to get into the rivers. When we first came to the first crossing, I was so careful not to get my feet wet. Skipped, jumped and bounced across a small river like Little Red Riding Hood, my feet were sparred.
However, subsequent rivers were not as merciful. This time we had no choice but to dip our legs into the rivers. The waters were indeed icy but bearable. And at some point, the water raised to my thigh level. I wondered how the petite Japanese girls going to manage this. They must be busy to keep themselves afloat!
Despite having wet feet, I totally enjoyed the stunning canyons. I was hoping that at least half of the distance for today was in this form of terrain. Unfortunately, after leaving the rivers behind us, we had to make this difficult ascent before sliding down the magnificent sand dunes. Surprisingly, my tempo managed to keep me up the steep slopes with good steady speed.
After the sand dunes, the terrain somewhat became rather monotonous. The sceneries hardly changed as we were clocking about 20 km on flat terrain. My mind was switched off totally and my feet just kept on auto-pilot mode and I walked mindlessly to finish the race.
New blisters were developed and more muscle soreness in other parts of the body. I hope to survive another day tomorrow!

Temperature hit -5 deg C when I woke up to take a leak. The stars were amazing and the milky way clearly visible. The stars would have been more awesome if the crescent moon was taken out of the equation. Nevertheless it was a tranquil moment as everyone was asleep in their tents.
I went back to my tent trying to fall asleep but finding it hard to do so. Tossed and turned for an hour before heading out to the campfire pit to get some warmth. Slowly everyone started coming out from their tents and cuddled around the fire. Despite at wee hours of the night, around 430am, there were endless crappy jokes to crank everyone up!
Flag-off took place at sharp and I was in good confidence to complete the 41.4 km and hopefully before . I decided to walk the entire course for the high elevation of around 3300 m above sea level would likely to cause some miscomfort if I were to run.
I walked alongside with Kenneth Johansson from . He plans to complete the four desert races and scale Mt Everest in one calendar year. All his races are sponsored. And guess what? The pair of socks he is wearing is priced at a ridiculous US$200! He plans to throw the socks away and I plan to pick them up and sell them on ebay! 200 bucks for a pair of socks is unheard off. Apparently they are used by NASA astronauts and now the manufacturer is putting these socks on trial on earth.
The walk in the first four hours was superb with cooling breeze and picturesque sceneries. The terrain was mostly uphill for the first 10km but eventually went downhill to reach the first campsite. I was doing pretty okay! After the first checkpoint, I managed to do some short runs to catch up Kenneth (that Swedish bloke) who went ahead during the ascent. Well he is a mountaineer and I am not.
The second checkpoint came by easy but this time the breeze blew intermittently and at some stages I could feel the heat burning my exposed arms. After checkpoint 2, the intensity of the heat tripled and the breeze stopped altogether and I was walking at the mercy of the rocky, sandy, undulating and uphill terrains. Reaching the third checkpoint, the last one for the day, took me longer than I should. The unforgiving heat had made my every step torturous. I snailed my way up the canyons and had to stop twice to get away from the heat and the soreness on my back due to a heavy rucksack. I carried with me the biggest camera in this competition, my Canon 30D, which weighed me down. Well blame on my vanity to take nice pictures during the race.
Finally the campsite was almost in sight. I quickened my pace to complete the race and came in 40. Not a bad start but I wonder how am I going to manage that gigantic SLR. Sigh… blame it on my vanity indeed!

I woke up at this morning having some mixed feelings – nervous and excited. Got up my bed, took a nice hot shower and head out to the hotel lobby awaiting for breakfast to be served. The restaurant was slowly filled up as the hours rolled on, and by around 9am, everyone was up and having the last nice breakfast before the race.
At , we made our way to the other hotel where the staff and volunteers were putting up to check-in for the race and get our rucksack inspected to ensure we have all the mandatory equipment necessary for the race. Took me less than an hour to get everything sorted; very efficient.
At , we loaded up onto the buses (one big bus and four mini ones) and were chauffeured to the campsite which was just an hour away from San Pedro town. The campsite was awesome and the surrounding views were just amazing! Snowcapped mountain peaks and one distinctive volcano sat just right in front of our sleeping tents. Blue skies and white clouds in the funniest shapes and sizes formed the backdrop. I just love this place.
I am sharing the tent with the other two Singaporeans, Paul and Kah Shin, and three funny Italians, Nicholai, Simone and Italo, who have their rucksacks weighed half of mine. I wonder how they managed to cut their weight down. No matter how I packed and repacked my rucksack remained as one of the heaviest; 13 kg.
As we were all settling down nicely and neatly into our respective tents, a huge and brutal sandstorm swept across the campsite and blew our tent down! If not for Simone who was sleeping at that time, our tent was likely to be blown away. The gust and sand were flying all over and coated my new race tees with a layer of red dust.
Welcome to

I flew into Calama yesterday evening and took the transfer with some of the fellow competitors, volunteers and crew to San Pedro de Atacama. While waiting for the domestic flight at Santiago, my eyes could not stop but trying to seek out fellow race friends. It was not difficult to identify, from among the passengers, who were from racingtheplanet. There seemed to have some kind of invincisible bondings. You can just tell who are in for the race and who are leisure travellers.
However, some were so totally disguised themselves as holiday makers rather than race competitors. The most noticeable is Mimi (Mimi I know you will be reading this and I have pre-warned you that I will blog about you here).
For those who have no idea who this Mimi person is, click on Atacama Crossing 08, go to the sub menu "Race Coverage" and click on "Official Competitors". Roll your cursor to Mimi Anderson (who is so not totally related to Pamela Anderson) and read on her profile. Tell me what you feel after reading her portfolio.
So I was there waiting for my bag to be loaded into one of the mini vans at Calama airport. Mimi, with Martin and his wife, walked up behind me. I turned around and asked if they were coming in for the race. We took turns to introduce ourselves starting from myself, then Martin and his wife. But before Mimi could speak, I asked she was here as a volunteer or supporting crew? She replied, with a doubtedful tone, that she was here for the race and introduced herself.
My image of Mimi, from her awesome profile, was a 'superwoman', someone of Marion Jones physique and perhaps butch looking. This Mimi standing right in front of me, wearing extremely loud bangles and jewelleries, pulling her bright pinky trolley bag just like the appearance of Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, with her sunglasses pushing up her blonde hair just like what Witherspoon would do in the movie. My jaws dropped. I was being too judgemental and stereotyping. I would have never imagine Mimi to look this way! Deep inside me, I was kow-towing to her.
Nevertheless, it was interesting for me to make new friends and seeing the reunion of some competitors from previous racingtheplanet races. Everyone was in high mood and friendly. I am starting to like this race, not the race course but the humane part of it.
Look out for my daily blogs starting on 30 March. Hope I have enough energy reserve to write something decent.
Cheers,
PJ

Greetings from Santiago! I guess like most participants, I will be heading to the San Pedro later the day. It is 3.14am now as I am typing this blog in the free hotel internet facilities. I thought if I forced myself to stay awake the whole day upon arriving I could get to sleep and do away the jetlag. But I found myself wide awake half hour ago and decided to turn on the tv to watch ´Desperate Housewives´ which is showing on the inhouse cable channels. Managed to get about 4 hours of undisturbed sleep.
Been flying for the last 2 days. Spent 18 hours cruising across the Pacific to reach San Francisco. Left Singapore on 24 March 6 am (GMT + 8) and arrived San Francisco the same day at 9 am (GMT - 8). Spent a day near San Jose to pick up some gears for the race and meet some friends working and studying here. Had some decent 5 hours sleep before heading towards the airport again. Left California at 1140 am (GMT - 8), flew across United States to reach Atlanta at 7pm (GMT - 4). Waited for 3 hours at the airport before flying southwards to arrive in Chile at 740 am (GMT - 3).
Total time spent flying and transiting are as follows:
(a) Singapore to Narita Tokyo = 6 hours and 30 minutes
(b) Transit time in Narita = 2 hours
(c) Narita to San Francisco = 9 hours and 30 minutes
(d) San Francisco to Atlanta = 4 hours
(e) Transit time in Atlanta = 3 hours
(f) Atlanta to Santiago, Chile = 9 hours
Total time spent flying =34 hours
Of course this is not the shortest way but definitely one of the cheapest options. Will be leaving to Calama in northern Chile around 3pm later today and fly another 2 hours. Will reach San Pedro at around 7pm today.
Am looking forward to meet the participants later the day!
Will update more,
PJ

The significance of the $2.00 sticker symbolises the daily pocket money a needy student receives from the ST School Pocket Money Fund. The “choose a date” implies a donation made to sponsor a needy student’s pocket money for that day. The donors can adhere the sticker on the date of their choice. Such action empowers them to feel that they have contributed to a charitable cause. It is nice to see kids coming back and forth to see their stickers on the calendars and feeling proud of their donation. The initiative objective to create the awareness of this charity has worked rather well.

Over the last weekend, five malls were busy trying to sell the stickers to the members of the public and we managed to rack up about US$6000 donation over the weekend. It may not be an astronomical sum but the efforts put in by the volunteers (who were mainly my family, friends and neighbours) were commendable. Despite the huge clouds hanging over the charity scene in Singapore, where two major charity organisations were found guilty of embezzlement, it is understandable that seeking donation through public pledging is an uphill task. Hence the sums collected were very encouraging.
My target is to hit US$30,000. We were a fifth into our goal. It is going to be a busy week for my kindhearted friends, who selflessly volunteered their precious weekends to do this, and myself. Hope we could exceed our expectations.
Shall update more on the fundraising event.
Cheers,
PJ

Fundraising run. Taking place on 8th (Orange Circuit) and 16th March (Blue Circuit)
Besides training for the fundraising run, I need to worry about the logistical and administrative aspect to ensure the event can take place with minimal glitch. Time is not in my favour and I need to get my act together fast!
Tomorrow (7 February) is Chinese New Year. The Year of the Golden Pig will be replaced by the Rat which happens to be the first animal in the Chinese zodiac sign.
Year after year, I am always keen to know out geomancy prediction for the coming year. For those who are interested, you may wish to find out what would be your luck for this Year of the Rat (do not believe it entirely; they are just predictions!)
Rat
Born in: 1924 1936 1948 1960 1972 1984 1996 2008
You have a lot of inauspicious stars in your life cycle this year. You will encounter work obstructions. Fortunately, if you are composed and flexible to changes, be steady and keep a low profile, you might be able to quell the danger. Meantime, you have the protection of Jiang Xing star, which enables you to break through obstacles in most times. Career and fortune luck will see breakthrough, but be cautious of gossiping, which may affect love luck.
From the career perspective, your career may meet turbulence, yet miracles will happen often. Good personal relationship with others will be a boost to career and entrepreneurship. This is a year of change, where change of jobs, position will be common. The matters of health are fine, but prevent catching a cold or overwork. Be careful of injuries and accidents, falls and injured limbs when at outdoors.
Wealth luck is excellent but it is not suited for gambling, not even for high risk speculative activity. You should eradicate the spendthrift habit, and beware of wealth luck dissipating. Love is in the air and full of romance. But mean person is in the way, where the lovers are principally affect by the adverse effect of gossips and rumours.
Ox
Born in: 1925 1937 1949 1961 1973 1985 1997
The sun is shining high; mentor luck is visible and is an excellent year. If opportunities are make the most of, together with mentor support, your career will be brought to greater heights. Undertakings should not be hasty; rather, you should do thorough planning and execute steadily to succeed. Business luck is good yet love luck is down with undulation.
Lucky star is in your life cycle. It is a good time for business establishment or expansion. Working Rats have to be proactive and diligent, and avoid romance with colleagues, to prevent career impediment. Note the mental fatigue and procrastination. Elderly has to take note of heart problem, consume plain meals, and take extra note of eye problem.
Use this year to get more acquaintance. Mentor luck comes from foreign lands and luck flow from four directions, resulting in considerable wealth. Do not pursue windfall aggressively, so leave it to fate. The married will face romance curse, so think of your spouse and be disciplined. The singles will meet their dream love and develop it further.
Tiger
Born in: 1926 1938 1950 1962 1974 1986 1998
This year is a test of endurance for Tigers compare to previous year. Control your temper and rashness. Evil stars gather in your life cycle, undertakings are not good. Thus, be extra alert with regards to business establishment, expansion or career advancement matters.
The career luck experiences fluctuations, business dealings are with many setbacks. Working persons should continue to be adaptable to environment; and performance is also continued to be in good lights of your superior. The young Tigers lack the drive to study, coupled with confused moods. There may be mouth and stomach illness, so take note of daily meal consumption. Beware of muggers when outdoors. Take greater care of the elderly at home. Take precaution against fire hazards.
Wealth luck is low, proper income is stable, with no signs of windfalls, so control your spending tp prevent cash flow problem. There may be loss of monetary funds, so manage your finance prudently. This is not a good year for relationship matters, where there are communication issue with family, and lovers; be more tolerant and caring.
Rabbit
Born in: 1927 1939 1951 1963 1975 1987 1999
Previous year’s bad luck is washed away. A year of excellent luck. Whether is it business, career, politics, or studies, this is the ripe time to charge in, display your entire forte, and you shall be able to expect outstanding results, high recognition. Excellent luck year is supporting you, aiding you to rise up steadily. Avoid gossips and other people matters.
This is the ripe time to establish or expand business, but avoid having speculative thoughts. In addition, remain humble and courteous, and maintain good interpersonal relationship, which will result in excellent business reputation soon. Career involving analytical abilities is favourable for working persons, where you have the opportunity to showcase your skills and talents. In particular, female Rabbits born in 1975.
Health is good, remember not to over indulge in alcohol and lust, control your willpower. Wealth star is beside you. Proper income and windfall wealth are plenty, but do not agreed. Be prudent in your investments. Take caution against sexual traps. Your sentiments are too much such that you get trap in love net easily. The married has to caution against the intrusion of 3rd party, destroying the family. Even when you feel lone at times, you should not be foraging hastily and blindly for company.
Dragon
Born in: 1928 1940 1952 1964 1976 1988 2000
Good and bad luck are an equal mix. All matters require you to stay on the defensive, rather than to be on the offensive. When there are changes, you should make detail plans, and after doing thorough contemplation on the matter, you may execute it systematically. This year you see lots of gossips surrounding yourself. Unforeseen misfortunes befall onto you, so you have to settle the matter in a low-key manner, and bury the hatchet. Also, if you have faith and diligence, this will also be a stable year for you.
Stay out of the circle of gossips, and you should mind your own business. Be pure at heart, honest and law abiding. Do not get involve in illegal activities, so as to avoid getting into lawsuits. Youngsters should stay away from bad company which will be good for your personal growth. Health, is good, just be alert of occurrence of injuries and accidents, especially when doing outdoor activities. Do not speed, drive safely.
Wealth luck fluctuates, so you should not make huge investments, and curb gambling. Proper income luck is steady, so conserve your every expenditure, so as not to sink into financial difficulties. Also, do not take up loans or be a guarantor.
Romance luck is wavering; couples have frequent disputes. Family discord should be resolved as soon as possible
Snake
Born in: 1929 1941 1953 1965 1977 1989 2001
Luck stars in your life chart amalgamate, previous year’s misspells wash out; general luck is good. Those born in the year of Snake have the hope of starting a new career path, and together with the aid of eminent person, you will be very successful. Simultaneously, the luck from owning of assets is great. It is within the year that you may also have the chance to purchase assets but please remind yourself that you should not be greedy and wicked in thoughts. Beware of wealth loss, sickness and scandals.
Snake businessman should grab the opportunity to strive to be outstanding through execution of a thoroughly made project plan. Ensure that everyone stays harmonious and committed to the same goal. With competition becoming stiffer, having a good partner will hasten your success. Students have lost their focus on their studies: you have to change your attitude. Health is not that good, caution against illness.
You possess abundant wealth luck where income luck is considerable and you can expect windfall luck. You have to use your wealth wisely, so if there is a chance to do so, purchase assets immediately. This year is favourable for long distance trip or shifting home.
Peach blossom luck is strong, favourable for romantic relationship. Married and unmarried couples’ relationships are so sweet and smoothing. There may be news of marriage in midyear.
Horse
Born in: 1930 1942 1954 1966 1978 1990 2002
This year’s luck is not good, and evil stars amalgamate in your life chart. Lucky stars are unable to lend strength. Every matter is not going smoothly, wealth luck is low, so you have to be calm and endure this harsh period. Be extra vigilant when investing or signing contracts, to prevent falling into traps, causing losses in wealth and reputation.
Every undertaking is met with hindrances. It’s better that you be patient to bide your time and use this period to do self reflection. Meanwhile, meticulously monitor the market situation and avoid making a bug fuss out of this hard time. This hectic year will exhaust you both physically and mentally. Take note that you may fall easily when climbing high. Avoid speeding and drive safely.
There’s fear of lawsuits relating to poison letters and scandals. Therefore, be extra alert as to your way of managing finances. First, get rid of greed, and 2nd, avoid being governed by your emotion. A greedy or soft heart will form incurable venom that is deadly to the body. You are exhausted and that will affect the relationship with your love ones. Females Horse in love should be more tolerant.
Goat
Born in: 1931 1943 1955 1967 1979 1991 2003
It is definitely a smooth year for you. Business dealings are good, and investments gain value. Eminent persons come from all directions which favours your wisdom and blossom luck. However, there’s a very crucial point to take note over here. Goats who meet grave matters will be thrown back by setbacks. Fortunately, things will turn out for the better, eventually.
Fortune star shines high. Business and career are doing very well. Those who are keen to develop their business further should do so now. Talented employee should display forte to gain commendation from superior.
Subsequently, pay raise, promotions and higher positions are expected. Health is good, though you must remember to do sufficient amount of exercises. Take precaution against muscle, skeletal and breathing related issues. Even though these are minor illnesses, you cannot afford to be complacent.
Income is abundant. Windfall luck is visible. Moreover, there may be sporadic appearance of sudden unexpected money or rewards, you must treasure your wealth, and purchase assets to retain its value. Your love life is full of colour. Married couples are in bliss. Courting couples may consummate their marriage this year.
Monkey
Born in: 1932 1944 1956 1968 1980 1992 2004
There’s obvious breakthrough for this Rat year. In career and business operation, you gain sufficient support from the subordinates. There is full harmony and cooperation. There are business gains. Working persons are appreciated and recognized by their superiors. There is eminent support; wealth comes in from distant land.
In general, the year is smooth, but there’s still a little setback in your luck. Be careful of vile persons creating trouble and setting plots to trap you. Be extra vigilant with regards to business activities. A year of joy and worries tires you and affects your health. Do open up and relax.
Wealth star accompanies you. Distant wealth comes in abundance. Income and windfall lucks are plenty. However, money comes, money goes, creating lots of troubles for you; so accumulate when you have the chance. Cut down on unnecessary expenses. You are emotionally unstable and have anxiety problems. Take note of these issues. Be careful of contracting the cold and digestive related problems at year-end.
Rooster
Born in: 1933 1945 1957 1969 1981 1993 2005
Lucky stars shine huge in life chart. The luck cycle this year is fabulous. In additional, you have the guidance of eminent persons and being at the right place at the right time, all understandings are effectively accomplished. Regardless it’s business establishment or expansion or development, you have to do it personally, and do not be indecisive. Great opportunities do not occur often. Seize the opportunity to do your best. Do not get yourself involve in monetary disputes.
Despite the excellent luck for Rooster this year, you are encircled by lots of gossips and scandals. Peach blossom curse is everywhere. Since you now know your fate, learn to discipline yourself and you will be able to rid off all worries. Business development is proceeding smooth. Working persons who are able to stay away from gossips will be very outstanding; pay raise, promotions and holding authority are possible. Health is good but do not over indulge in food. Take note of food hygiene and avoid eating uncooked food.
Income luck is plenty. You can do multi forms of investments. Windfalls luck is unfathomable; it’s better for you to leave it to fate. Business profits are good but do not greed over fast cash and involve in risky activities. Your luck with the opposite gender is strong. Personal relations are good. Courting couples are enjoying sweet romance while married couples should not touch illicit relationship.
Dog
Born in: 1922 1934 1946 1958 1970 1982 1994 2006
Evil stars gather in your life chart and lucky stars lack the strength to support you. Thus your luck is not so good. Before doing anything, think thrice and do not be hasty, else others will be able to plot against you. Vile persons are causing trouble, so this is the time to endure, tolerate and bide your time to strike back.
In business dealings, you must be able to differentiate between vile person and noble person. Your business and undertakings are impeded. Do not worry. Take it easy and observe the situation to make the necessary amendments. No matter if you are doing business or working, you should not be rash in your actions. As for your health, you will contract illness easily. Take good care of possible bloodshed.
The luck cycle for this year is bad. Wealth luck is low. Be sensible in managing your finances or you will face financial difficulties. There is even fear of robbery. Love luck is all right just that married couples are constantly bickering. It is advisable to show tolerance and care to each other. Love relationship is not progressing well.
Pig
Born in: 1923 1935 1947 1959 1971 1983 1995 2007
After going through last year’s unfavourable luck, this year’s luck is again a mix of good and bad. Evil stars create troubles and lucky stars are weak. Sickness star is present, so with regards to diet, shelter and traffic, you have to be extra careful. Career luck is normal and sees no breakthrough. Working persons should try to enhance personal relations to prevent being isolated in solitude.
You are full of plans for the year, yet every matter is not going smoothly. All the progresses are impeded. If you are able to calm your mind and bide for the right time to strike, it will be better than to charge in hastily. Pigs should gather more time to rest, to avoid succumbing to fatigue. If you are unwell, you should seek treatment early. Youngsters who are suffering from sleep walking should seek treatment too.
Wealth star is very dim. You should not get involve in risky activities. Stay away from gambling. If you are able to manage your finance well, and do not spend unnecessarily, you will be able to get through this tough period.
This is a year where you will be able to have more affiliation with opposite gender and you will have the chance to meet a dream love in the beginning of the year. And this may be your everlasting soul mate.
Happy Chinese New Year!
Cheers,
PJ

In December, just after I signed up for this race, I was training relatively frequently with zest. Moving on to the January, the increasing teaching workload and undesirable laziness have taken a toll on my exercise regime. I intend to step up my trainings in February to the first week of March.
My phone alarm went off at 4 am this morning, and despite it snoozing at a nine-minute interval, I managed to get myself out from bed only two and a half hours later. Such lethargy and languor have to stop.
February is yet another major festive celebration in the Chinese calendar. Ushering the Year of the Rat on 7 and 8 Feb shall not hamper my determination to make training a daily affair. Just hoping that whatever I promised can be fulfilled. Controlling my food intake is perhaps one of the biggest challenges as the Chinese New Year is often packed with unhealthy snacks!I plan to do the following:
Feb 1st week: run every day ranging from 10 km to half marathon.
Feb 2nd week: continue my daily run but increase the distance to 30 km.
Feb 3rd week: runs and walks to complete a full marathon or longer distances
Feb 4th week: same as the 3rd week
Mar 1st week: less running and switch to other sports like swimming and cycling, and perhaps more time in the gym
Mar 2nd week: fundraising run with maximum distance 25 km
Mar 3rd week: fundraising run with maximum distance 25 km
Mar 4th week: rest and final preparation for the big day on 30th March!
Will be meeting with a giant retail real estate company in Singapore next week to discuss the possibility of holding a fundraising run between various shopping malls in March. Shall update the outcome of the meeting.
Happy Chinese New Year!
Cheers,
PJ

Running at my usual training ground had become mundane, hence a new location was sought after and decided to run in a coastal park which was near to the French restaurant. It turned out to be a bad choice for it was a Saturday evening and the park was packed with people armed with skewers, charcoal, and fresh food for some massive barbeque parties. The entire 8 km coastal park was littered with throngs of screaming kids, noisy teenagers, smoking dads and busy mothers. There were amateur rollerbladers and cyclists who cut into my lane occasionally and disrupted my momentum without any sign of apology. I probably got some unwanted stares and insulting remarks on my insanity to run with a rucksack. I would never want to run there on weekends anymore.

The red arrow indicates the half marathon distance I ran today
Nevertheless, the breezy Saturday night made another delightful run and I accomplished a half marathon with a 13.5 kg load. But I have to confess that I did not run the entire half marathon for the food kiosks set up along the stretch of road I was running on had cold isotonic drink screaming for my attention. My will power was not strong enough to resist the temptation and stopped for an ice-cold energy drink. I walked for about 3 km before quickened my pace to finish my training.
I had stopped training for about two weeks due to an unknown injury coming from my right foot as well as suffering from a bad flu. As my injury did not seem to subside after a week, I made a visit to a specialized running retail outlet to do an analysis on my running style. True enough, I had a pronated right foot that could be the likely cause of my injury. I ended up buying a pair of Northface under their recommendation and added on a heat moldable custom footbed to take care of my high foot arches. The new trainer with more fitting insoles indeed made the run comfortable despite some soreness coming from the same right foot. I was appalled to find out that I had been running on incompatible shoes all these years.
No trainings for a fortnight can be detrimental to my stamina. As my friends were screaming their lungs out for their favourite idol some distances away, my muscles cried with similar resonating effect. My leg muscles were feeling tight after the 12 km. I persisted for another 2 km before succumbed to the icy drink temptation. To pick up running after brisk walking for about 3 km was not easy as well. I figured I possibly would not be running throughout the entire 250 km, so I would need to get used to the idea of running and walking to complete the race.
There are new developments for my fundraising effort. Shall update soon.
Cheers,
PJ

The festive celebrations are making me lazy as well as threatening my determination to clock longer mileage. Or should I admit I was getting lazier amidst all the celebrations? I thought I could complete a 24 km run with my backpack before the end of 2007, however a week after we ushered in the New Year, the 24-km goal remains unattained.I ought to get my training rhythm back in place before the Christmas puddings started to form an extra layer around belly. This morning I woke up at 4.00 am to prepare for my run at 4.30 am. I was determined to run 24 km today.
The breezy early morning made the run pleasant.
The stars were out but only the brightest ones can be seen in the illuminated Singapore night skies. The crescent moon hung lowly, just above the horizon, and it looked rather picturesque. After completed my first round of 6km, I felt good. My upbeat tempo and pumping adrenaline kept me going.Into my 10th kilometre, a sharp but bearable pain went through my right foot. It came from the sole. I slowed down my speed but determined not to stop.
The pain was intermittent and began excruciatingly so nearer to my starting point (I run in circles). I stopped at the start-point and took off my Asics to identify the source of the pain.
But to my surprise, there were no bruises, no cuts, no swells, nothing. The pain came from within the foot. The pain returned when I added pressure onto my right foot. It was rather torturous to limp back to my car.Driving home with an injured foot was not as bad as I had feared. I wondered what were the causes? Maybe the Asics is not customised to my feet, or maybe there is a hairline crack in the bones on my right foot. Perhaps I should get one pair of tailor-made running shoes. I know for sure that my training has to come to a brief halt (for a week maybe) before hitting on the road again.
On a side note, I was on the national tv Mandarin prime time news on Christmas Day. The news reporter featured my participation in this race. Unfortunately I did not tape down the footages to show. Hope there will be more chances for free media publicity to help with my fundraising effort. Shall update in the coming week.

After the interview, I went for my training in the same reservoir. As I was tormenting through the blazing sun, which was rare given the wet season in Singapore now, the idea of combining my training with fundraising hit me.
So I thought I could perhaps pack my rucksack with 12 kg worth of fundraising tee shirts and run from one shopping mall to another. When I arrive at one mall, there will be a booth with volunteers selling the fundraising tee shirts. Those tees from my rucksack will be taken out for sale but at a higher price; maybe a different print and colour as well. Only when I have sold off all the tee shirts from my rucksack that I shall move on to another mall with a fresh load.
My friends thought the idea is interesting despite being very gimmicky. Thus, I have worked out the plan for three different runs in different parts of Singapore - central, western and eastern part. The distance for the runs ranges from 14 km to 18 km.

I guess my immediate scope now is to seek sponsors for the fundraising tees. Work on the tee shirt design (I thought of calling the entire project "Mad Man On The Run!") and get on with the printing process. Shall visit the management of the shopping malls to negotiate for free use of their spaces. Broadcast this fundraising activity via different media to generate awareness and support from the general public. I am not sure if my solo effort can pull off this rather big fundraising event, but worth the try.
On a side note, I completed an 18 km route while carrying a 13 kg load this morning. Hit the road at around 6 am and took me about 2 hours 15 minutes. Shall do another set of the same distance before moving on to complete 24 km with the same load.
Cheers,
PJ

The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund was initiated on Children's Day (October 1) in the year 2000 by The Straits Times* to heighten public awareness of the plight of children from low-income families who were attending school without proper breakfast, or pocket money to sustain their day in school. The aim is to alleviate the financial burden faced by parents in providing for their children's education. At the same time the funds will help children who are already facing difficulties in remaining in school to stay on. It is a simple yet meaningful cause that takes care the welfare of needy students, thus allowing them to receive good education without disruption. This year SPMF hopes to raise S$3.7 million dollars to support about 9000 students. Despite Singapore being the one of the wealthiest nations in Asia, there are still underprivileged students who go to school penniless and hungry. With aid from the pocket money fund, these students will not have to undergo starvation and have the ability to concentrate on their lessons.
Soliciting for donations is never an easy task, let alone to manage it entirely by myself, but I hope to raise about S$50,000 and more in the next 3 months. Wish me good luck! Will be having an interview with a Chinese news reporter tomorrow morning. Hope the interview goes well to earn me some airtime in the popular 10pm Chinese news to garner interests in the Atacama Crossing, as well as, generous donations from well-wishers to SPMF.
Shall update again after the interview.

The sky was clear and I could see a couple of stars from my bedroom. I got onto my act swiftly; put on my running shoes and backpack, and hit the reservoir about half an hour later.

The weather was perfect for running (or sleeping) - breezy, cooling with no lightning threats. I doubt the Atacama Desert is going to offer me such delightful climate. I reckon it would either be too hot in the day or too cold in the evening. Nevertheless, I was happy to enjoy the peacefulness and serenity of the reservoir at such early hour.
The run was good, I completed 12-km in about 1.5 hours. I am never a good runner, be it long or short distance, hence running approximately 8 km/h with a 12 kg load was pretty awesome to me. I shall train harder to hit 10 km/h.
The weather report said it would be dry for the next day or two and I shall make use of the chance to clock extra mileage before the monsoon sweeps in to disrupt my training schedule again. My next aim - 18 km with a 13 kg load.
I have made a decision on the choice of a children charity I intend to adopt. Shall share more in my next blog.
Cheers,
PJ

I grew up in this place called Teban Gardens, located in southwestern part of Singapore. Near Teban Gardens there is a reservoir (Pandan Reservoir) where I jogged very frequently when I was younger. This water catchment area is surrounded by light industries and residential estates. Despite moving out of Teban Gardens 7 years ago, I still returned to the same spot to jog. I enjoy the run there for it is flat and there are route markers to indicate distances. Each round around the circumference of the reservoir measures about 6 km (I think is 6.05 km to be exact). So I could progressively trained to cover longer distances by running more rounds. 7 rounds make a marathon and so I thought was easy. - 7 rounds as opposed to 42 km.

Pandan Reservoir - one round measures 6 km
I arrived at about 1630 hours and started jogging. Into my third kilometre I saw this huge rain clouds drifting disgustingly in my direction. Shortly after, lightning flashed from afar, followed by thunder rumbling a good half minute later. I knew my location was out of any lightning threat. Apparently Singapore has one of the highest rates of lightning activity in the world. This increases the chance of being struck dead and we do get reports, periodically, of death resulting from lightning strikes here.
By the time I hit pass my fourth kilometre, the thunderstorm clouds were brewing in full force above me. The time lapse between the flashes of lightning and the incessant claps of thunder had shortened dramatically. I was weary of my situation for the reservoir offers little shelter and the highest point is some distance away. I was jogging in a rather open but precarious surrounding. I quickened my pace and ran with my head constantly looking at the dark clouds. I was naive to think that I could dodge any lightning coming my way. Fortunately I was safe from getting my brain fried!
Rain started to pour and its rhythm increased. Soon I was completed soaked in the torrential rain. Singapore experiences the northeast monsoon and rainfalls are rather frequent in December and January. Rains often last between 1 to 3 days at a stretch. I regretted not having to start my training by an hour earlier as it was dry the entire morning.
As I approached my starting point (or ending point since I am running in circles), I thought of doing another round to complete a 12 km run. The rain, the flashes of lightning and a warm hot chocolate drink awaiting me in a cafe nearby had shortened my decision-making and I headed straight back to my car instead. I shall try to complete a 12-km run by the end of this week. Hope I get some sunny days in the next few days.
More blogs to come,
PJ

The last time I took part in an organised event/expedition to a desert was 9 years ago where I trekked across the Gobi Desert in Outer Mongolia. The trekking distance was the same as the Crossing but the duration to complete was three times longer. I gained valuable experiences and made wonderful friendships. I reckon it is timely for me to do another event to gain different experiences and to meet like-minded friends.

My Gobi trek in 1999. Now I am looking forward for another adventure!
My love for nature and adventure is probably one of the main contributing factors for my participation in the race in Chile next March. Doing something extreme and pushing my physical and mental limits to the max is part of the character and personal development process I would constantly subject myself to. Hence, I am really looking forward to the race. Though I still wonder at times why I am spending so much money to fly around the globe (Singapore-San Francisco-Santiago) to 'torture' myself. I believe this race experience will be worth every cent and effort.
Now I am looking to marry my race with a charitable cause. Have found a few charities and non-profit organisations in Singapore that I can raise funds for. I just got to make a swift decision on which cause I will be supporting. I guess I got to do it fast as time is not exactly in my favour.
Shall update more.
Cheers,
PJ
