Atacama Crossing (2011) blog posts from Stephanie Cave

12 March 2011 12:45 pm (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

this morning we finished the race with an approx 10k run. the course had a bit more to it than we had thought. right from the start we did some mountain climbing, encountered rolling sand dunes, a mini river, until we finally reached some flat terrain. cc and i did a walk/ jog, and were happy with our time. all in all, I have to say that, aside from paying full retail, this is the hardest thing I have ever done. very proud of team cave! thanks to all who sent us messages through the blog. they really helped us get through the grueling week. pics will be up shortly on facebook! thanks to rtp and the amazing volunteers who put in an incredible amt of hrs. as competitors we don't see half of what they do, and they certainly deserve a lot of credit! thanks to all who donated to our auction, and to those who personally donated funds to lifeline shanghai! without your support we wouldn't be able to do the work we do! ....so, what's next?

Congratulations! Yay!!! Go Team Cupcake! See you soon in Shanghai!

Fantastic - well done Team Cave. So impressed, obviously optimised your food fluid intake - to be able to do a jog in the last section. Loved the way you obviously walk / ran through the pain - can't wait to see the size of the angle. You legends - onwards - to the Sahara!

Epic! Any other words would be an understatement of what you have gone through and achieved.

Whats next... stop these crazy races... they are insane... nice picture on your profile, think i seen that before

12 March 2011 11:06 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

hi all!

thanks again for all your messages! it really is great reading these now that we have finished the long march and are back at camp resting up for tomorrow's 'run'. now that i'm semi-conscious, i can finally write more in detail. the last email i had so much to say but by the time i sat down, was too tired to think of anything.

day 5: hot during the day, windy as hell at night

the night before was about 4 degrees celsius. my liner, bag, 2 long sleeves, jacket, hat, and gloves were no match for the cold.  it was the worst possible timing since we had an 8am start for the long mach. no sleep for this lady.

the start off though was at these beautiful salt flats that looks like frozen cottage cheese. really breath taking....until i realized that we were going over them. 15kms over this stuff.  the surface didn't break and it was extremely hard to maneuver.  i doubt i'll be eating cottage cheese for a while.

cp2--one guy drops out. i think we are down to only 84 competitiors. i'm told this is a higher than the usual 1 out of 5 drop out rate.  there are only a few of us 'walkers' left in the race.

there are 7 stages, totalling over 74 kms.  after cp 4, we have to use our headlights and make our way in the dark.  a stray dog that has been running alongside competitors, decided to join us for this leg.  we didn't have much to give him though, and as we passed someone by, he decided to stick with him.  our dogs probably would have done the same.

along the way a guy in a passing truck tells us to stay on the road, otherwise we'll go into the land mines, which were put in during the 90s.  cc said he was joking.  we just found out he wasn't.

We make it to cp5 at around 10:30pm, where we have covered over 50kms straight.  here we can have hot water and rest.  our intended 1hr stay turned into 3.  no adjectives, aside from curse words, come to mind when describing how i felt at that moment.  this is a pg rated blog, so i shall refrain.

by this time, cc's ankle and my knees had already abandoned ship, and cc's stomach declared mutiny after cp 4.  we must have looked like some pair, hobbling along, stinky as hell, and all broken.

we finally arrived at campsite the next day at 6:15am.  thank god, buddha, and my lucky stars we did!

we immediately fall alsleep. except for 61yr old superstar Kumi, all our other tentmates arrived ages ago.

i'm happy to report that i still did not get one blister.  thank you asics trail shoes, injiji socks, and body glide for saving me!  unfortunately i can not say the same for poor ol hubbie.  all in all, though, we can't complain. i have seen some really disgusting feet. i mean, even morphine wasn't doing the job for one guy.  plus, we didn't get blown up by a land mine, so bonus.

boob report: it has been said that the salt flats have more cleavage than me now. excellent. jane---it's going to take more than ice cream to get this cupcake back to normal!!

tomorrow is the final stage to the finish line! woohoo! we are going to do a 10k 'run' into san pedro de atacama and then have our banquet at a restaurant there. ole!

big hugs to all!!!

Incredible, You are both stars, Well done, just the short stage left. Then it coke and pizza JM

09 March 2011 06:46 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

hi guys!

sorry for not writing. as you may have seen, we have had 11-12hr days and each day is excruciating and painful.

day 2, about 40km, day time 43plus C, nightime freezing:

rob, me and cc stayed together for most of the day. the morning was filled with river crossings, at least 15 or so. what? water in the driest desert that supposedly hasn;t seen rain in centuries?  totally false advertising! seriously. and they just got rain here a few months ago, which meant that it has been all blue skies, and no clouds to save us from the relentless heat. excellent.

well, it;s no surprise that this is the hardest race of all rtp;s races. not false advertising. this race is infinitly harder than gobi, in every way. yesterday a few people dropped out, today 14.  one of which, was our mate rob.  we miss him dearly and find it hard to go on with out him. we actually tried playing the,
"what would rob say" game to pass time, but that lasted all about 5min as neither of us had anything witty to say. oh, and rob--somehow the whole camp is calling me cupcake now. thanks. and denvy, after cp3, i totally indulged in one of my savoured astronaut ice creams! heaven.

i was so tired that i didn't realize until midday that my shorts were on backwards.

day 3, about 40km, hot as hell:

we didn;t think it could get worse, but it did. conditions were unrelenting and the stages just keep getting longer and longer. i left my sunglasses at cp3, and of course, had to go one to the most difficult section in the sand dunes without them. consequently my eyes are quite burned.

so far no blisters, but i could be the only one in camp. cc's feet look like they've been through war and his ankle is quite sore.

a few more dropouts.

day 4, 42km, hell.

today was bad. there were two stages labeled 'extremely difficult'.  we both hurt.  i have a bad heat rash and cc,s ankle is trashed.  the infamous, coral-like salt flats were just hideous. they don't break when stepped on and it was so hard not to trip or twist one;s ankle.  we barely made the cut off time and came in at 7:50pm or so.

going to eat a lovely dehydrated meal now. miss you all very much!

tomorrow is the long day' the first 15km labeled extremely difficult. cross fingers we make it.

big kiss!

Make sure ye give a smile at the finish :) I don't care what ye drink, but the first "PINTS"......GUINNESS are on The Irishman's when ye get back to Shanghai. 06 March 2011 06:15 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

first off, thank you all for your messages and support! there is nothing cooler than coming back from a long haul, tired, and ready to kill cc for signing us up this again, but then crossing the finish line and reading these!!! kisses to you all!

there is an unbelievable amount of rtp veterans here. so many that it's quite intimidating.  you all thought we were crazy, but we have met people of a whole new level! case in pt: there is a legend joining us--some german guy named reinhardt who has done every race known to man, plus like 6 badass badwaters.  he even has a rtp tattoo on his arm.  i of course have told all the people i have met that i'm highly competitive and that they better watch out, cause i plan on being in the top 100 this time. take that!

Day 1
today we started the day at 3200meters! after checkpoint 1(cp1) climbing a small hill was like climbing one of our hangzhou mountains.  overall the first 2 stages were ok, but then the 3rd stage was just freakin never-ending. scenery is unbelievable, and yes, there are a lot of rocks here.  it's also very windy and bc it's so dry, the dust/sand is everywhere and impossible not to be inhaled.

rob was a speedracer today. he is in great shape.  me & cc stuck together. his ankle is still hurting but he's about as stubborn as i am, and will crawl pass the finish line if he has to. oh, and today was our 1 yr anniversary! nothing like spending our special day with 6 other tentmates.

well, the best thing to come out of this race, is that by the end of it, i'll finally be able to fit into my skinny jeans--the ones from the 8th grade. woohohoo!  downside is that my boobs will be down to a c cup.....c, as in concave!
i can't win....

more tomorrow! lots of love from us both!

keep going you 2!! still enjoying the nice sleepingbag/coat I guess with those temperatures? Don't worry about the concave things you can fix them again here!!!....with chocolate cakes? ice creams? ...

Posted On: 08 Mar 2011 11:57 pm

Great going Steph. Glad to hear you both are still in the mix. You're an inspiration! A way to go still - hang in there! Best to Cam

Posted On: 08 Mar 2011 05:27 am

Nice going CupCake. Keep the Big Guy by your side and you'll be alright. I think the next stage has an ice cream stand, that should solve the concave problems. Kia kaha - awesome .......

Posted On: 08 Mar 2011 04:59 am

Well done the two of you for completing what was obviously a very tough stage. Thoughts are with you and Rob who I see has withdrawn. Hope he's OK. Don't forget to enjoy the flamingoes.

Posted On: 08 Mar 2011 03:18 am

You gotta be the funniest person alive. After a tough day out in the heat and sand, you still have a strong sense of humour on your blog - ha! Are you sure you are working hard enough out there?! ;) ok now I'm going to dig up my inner Chinese for this quote: "Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” - Confucius. Stay strong, Stephanie!

Yay! Go Team Cupcake!!! Mazel Tov on completing the first day with that grueling last leg and celebrating your 1st anniversary!

Congratulations on not only finishing Day 1 but on your Wedding Ann. You guys are just incredible, so stoic - can we claim any genetic tie up? You just keep imagining yourself in those skinny jeans Stephanie! Will look forward to your message tomorrow, maybe it won't be so long. Love you.

Posted On: 07 Mar 2011 04:00 am

You guys are so freeekin awesome; have so much respect for your just-do-it-craziness. Compared to the two of you Charlie Sheen seems boringly normal. (wait ...what does that make me?) Big love to you both. Now go kick some dusty Chilean ass (after a well deserved nights sleep). G x ....and happy anniversary guys!!

Posted On: 07 Mar 2011 02:59 am

OMG concave boobies? That's sounds terrible haha! Don't worry though. You'll eat a crapload of calories when you're done and they'll "grow" back :)

04 March 2011 04:35 am (GMT+08:00) Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Urumqi

Santiago is such a cool city, and I'm so glad the three of us decided to tour around beforehand. to celebrate our last night, we stuffed ourselves silly at a restaurant called Ox. the place practically had a phd in all things regarding beef, with tons of different cuts of meat on the menu and five grades of cooking temperatures to choose from. ay caramba!

but we had to say goodbye and today we arrived in San Pedro. it is so surreal being here. it feels like we're on a mexican cowboy movie set--carbon copied adobe mud storefronts lining the dusty streets, international backpackers and poncho-wearing bohemians grazing the cafes ( smoking who knows what), stray dogs sleepily watching passerbys. I'm just waiting for the occasional tumbleweed to sweep pass my ankles, and, (to make things interesting) Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson to ride up on horseback and ask me (in Spanish with English subtitles) if, by any chance, I've seen a kidnapped Chinese princess go by.

I am so glad we are here.

but I think we took this altitude factor a bit too lightly. as soon as we arrived, my head started to hurt. now that is has been a couple hrs in town, both my hands and feet are very tingly. cc is experiencing the same. Probably not a good sign. I just hope we acclimate pronto, as we head for the starting pt tomorrow, which is a bit higher up than here. also, as one would expect the driest place on earth to be-- it's freakin dry. mouth, lungs, skin-- all now know what it's like to be one our dehydrated meals. it will be interesting to see how the first ascent will effect us.

anyhow, off to bed now. pretty much have shaken off the jet lag but this party girl is down for the count.

Hope you are ok guys, especially with the altitude. Pass on my best wishes to CC and Rob Steph. Yabba dabba doo Trev

Are you guys using Diamox? That made my extremities tingly too... not so much likey. Have a blast and hope the altitude does get too attitude-y with you. xoxoxo

Damn right, you need to have a tan to protect yourself in the desert! You don't want to get a burn on the first day there.. ;) I love reading your blog as it makes me laugh; would have paid for your cybertent just so that I can experience Atacama through you. I hope you've got some of that cool astronaut ice-cream packed. And hang on to your Raidlight sleeping bag/coat/transformers camouflage thingy - it's hot stuff! Have fun out there, take good care of yourself and stay strong. x

Whoa - you're doing the Atacama! How very insane and cool :) Yes I remember your Raidlight sleeping bag was a big hit, and I was so envious that you were toasty warm. I'm looking into getting a portable battery which charges whatever gadget you have - will let you know when I have more info on that. Train well! x

Posted On: 17 Jan 2011 06:38 pm

Thanks for the tips! I sure hope I can find some candied Ginger in Latvia!

Posted On: 15 Jan 2011 09:44 pm

I love the training routine! I am also definitely going to scope out the astronaut ice cream sandwiches asap.....I imagine they must be heavenly in the middle of a desert race. BTW... has anyone had any luck with any of the chargers? I am going to bring an extra camera battery, but will need to charge my i pod. Cheers, Anne

Posted On: 11 Jan 2011 01:38 am

Stephanie, I remember reading your blog last year for Gobi March and your training regime was eating teamed with shopping - and that seemed to work out well!! Definitely agree with Maya, earplugs are a godsend, and I'm going to investigate astronaut ice-cream right now, as it sounds ridiculous. Hope the preparations continue to go well. Sam H - RacingThePlanet

Posted On: 10 Jan 2011 05:41 pm

The solution to not hearing the annoying krinkle sound of the emergency blanket...ear plugs! Especially good to have in case a tentmate snores (or even someone 3 tents down from you snores). I like your candied ginger idea.

Hi Stephanie: I started/didnt' finish AC2010 and am back for the madness again. The nights are COLD but I was comfortable in just my hat, long sleeve shirt and my jacket over that. I had my gloves handy and only put them on when I wasn't trying to eat (not easy to do with gloves). See you there!
