Great start of first stage. Felt very strong. Ran own pace, in full control and in top 10. After 13K crashed badly on a steep, rocky decent. Right foot stuck under a rock. Rest of body continued. Bruised ribs, knees and elbows but worst of all severe hamstring injury. Completed stage (38K) in great pain (and sand storm). Verdict of medical team: 3 weeks of rest and a couple of months to fully recover. Got up today before other runners to give last try. Negative. End of adventure. So sorry, disappointed and frustrated. Thanks again for your interest and support.

Special big to my wonderful family. Miss you.
Best Michael

Arrived safely at the small desert village San Pedro de Atacama. Surrounded by volcanos and sand dunes the setting of the village is epic. Spent the afternoon unpacking, speaking with other competitors and chatting with blind runner, Vladmi (Brazil), whom I think I will be guiding on the first stage. Finished the day with a Pizza accompanied by Tom (USA) and Bob (Hong Kong).
