Winds of 50 knots prevented us from running yesterday and the captain did his best to find us a sheltered island – but to no avail. So after about 36 hours of sailing around, we finally managed to get ashore today for our last run.
This was a 3km loop. The courses are short for safety and environmental reasons. But it’s a complete mind @@@@ running loops for 7 hours or so. It was pretty windy on today’s course, again with deep snow. It was beautiful but we are now all exhausted and happy to be heading home.
I will be spending 30 hours in Buenos Aires on the way home, which my Dad arranged for me, since he used to live there. So I am really excited about that. The adventure is not over yet…. Thanks Dad!
Looking back on the week, it has been an incredible once in a lifetime experience. The landscape is phenomenal and the wildlife has been almost within touching distance. Penguins have the right of way on the course, and thought nothing of waddling up to us. I was really nervous and apprehensive about this event and cannot believe I have just completed an ultramarathon in Antarctica and survived…! An emotional experience.
Big hugs Josh and Sam – I will be home on Friday. Miss you lots xxxx

Wish I had tried that sooner, as I was 2nd placed woman yesterday! And jumped lots of places up to 44th overall after my mediocre first day of shivering. But I can’t complain as that is what these endurance races are all about: working out clothing, nutrition, pain, mindset etc…. Felt really great and ran hard and REALLY enjoyed it as a result. Huge difference from the misery of Day 1. Conquered my fear of extreme cold and learnt from my mistakes (and from lack of training in cold climates) and just flew. Sod’s law but the weather today has been so terrible with winds of 50 knots, so today’s racing was cancelled. Just as I am finally warming up …!!!!
The course yesterday resembled a red piste in a ski resort. We had to zigzag up a steep mountain, over the top and slalom back down. In knee deep snow. Beautiful icy blue icebergs and penguins. Just beautiful! I had such a great day.
Alison, the North Face 100 course has been perfect training in terms of putting in the hours for very few Kms!
Having a lot of fun on the ship, especially with Belinda and Ryan who are great company. The ship is crashing around in the waves right now and we seem to be one of the few not struck by seasickness today, and eating everyone’s share of the buffet. That’s what I call Relentless Ingenuity!
We are now heading for King George Island where we hope the weather will be good enough tomorrow for our last and longest day.
Thanks to everyone for the lovely messages! Again huge thanks to Natalia for the loan of the ice ultra gear J. And thanks to everyone for the donations to Room to Read. x

Today was just out of this world. We raced on an island populated by thousands of penguins. It was just incredible. The course was really tough: 2km loops on a steep hill, but the view was spectacular from all sides. I learnt from my mistakes yesterday and did a better job with clothing and nutrition so had a more enjoyable experience.

A huge thank you to everyone who has so generously sponsored me. As you know, the goal is to raise enough funds to build a new school in Laos.
A few people asked me why I chose to run for this cause.
After my firm screened
