Still travelling with the camp, but will try and make my way back to Marathon tomorrow. (Thursday)

The advantage of my current situation is that i can see the amazing camp logistics as the camp is dismantled and re-erected in a new location all (hopefully) before the lead runners get in

And then you get to see the leaders run in after having run another mountain marathon each day with backpack in 3.5 to 4 hrs…formidable.

I have also managed to squeeze in an excellent Greek meal with a couple of Cold Mythos, and or arrival at camp today a shower on the beach. Such luxuries.

Needless to say, the body now feels fine, fed and rested.

Andy still going strong. Mad man.

Love to all
D

An amazing effort David, and far beyond anything I could ever manage! Undoubtedly a wise decision to allow your head to overrule your heart - enjoy the extra days off! Take care and hope to catch up soon xx

Hey David just know how proud we are of you; 12 RTPs is pretty epic to say the least. Your determination and dedication for years of challenge is remarkable… and how grateful must be the CSC be for all the funds raised to improve their quality of life. Dad’s comment yesterday was ‘rather him than me, but then I am 95 you know!’ Glad you got to see behind the scenes and have a mythos on us 😊 Enjoy your time with S&W and much love, Sis X

Well if you have been monitoring the race in detail you will have seen that i bailed from the race after day 2.

After 2 brutal days (for me!) my legs had gone and i had no appetite for food - hence the second day was so painfully slow i had little time to recover.

Discretion being the better part of valour - i decided that for the 1st time in 12 rTP events it was time to pull the pin.

Having spent that day in the camp chilling by a Greek village eating grapes - i would say on balance it was the right idea.

The course has indeed been spectacular, but as someone who is not too steady on his pins with heights i found that technical ascents and descents a challenge.

Great to hear of all the sporting results from over the weekend - which have all been positive. I will have to find some Americans to remind them of the Ryder cup score..

I will give some more considered write up of the days in due course. Note to self - there are lots of mountains in Greece.

Love to all. S&W- look forward to seeing you in Greece on Saturday. Be prepared - i have a hunger and a thirst!

Sorry to hear this news DG. 12 RTP races! In the words of Apollo, that’s a Sun-sational streak! I’m sure the pins will be in fine fettle soon and you’ll be planning the next adventure. Cheers

David, maybe your legs have worn out, but thank god your brain hasn't...it's a wise man who knows when to quit before disaster happens.....age catches up with us all, and i'm certainly feeling it, so hope you can reconcile with yourself and feel happy that you've done RTP so many times (William could start now, and have more years to enter before he gets to a similar age!) Well done! jim

Every good run comes to an end and the main thing is you’re in one piece. Enjoy the extra down time. Xx

Bag packed. Unpacked. Repacked. Crisps crushed. Foot tape cut to shape , ready for me to mummify them tomorrow AM.

Tincture of Benzoin is one of those things that leaks, no matter how many ziplocks you have sealed it in. Lending everything a medicinal aroma and sticky touch.

Competitors are drifting in. Relieved to arrive with their bags, and to have avoided the mournful empty carousel of doom at the airport.

The race is not 6 stages. The real first stage is getting to the start line and is comfortably the hardest.

The weather forecast for Sunday looks like 20 degrees with rain. Not ideal for those on Greek holiday. But ideal for a pasty Englishman who needs to yomp up 1400m.

I am in tent “Leonidas” in honour of  a Spartan King killed at the Battle of Thermopylae. Does this augur well? I may need to consult the Oracle of Delphi.

Ok, I admit I looked that up. Poor knowledge of Greek mythology is my Achilles’ elbow.

Sending much love and admiration dear David from a sunny Exeter, I’ll make you the best Greek salad 🥗 when you’re done. I’ll also show Dad your handsome lithe photo tomorrow when I visit… have a great time number 42 thinking of you (especially when I look out at my olive 🫒 trees) xxx

Hope your first day on the course wasn't too painful - your weekend's sporting news: Wrexham 1-1 Derby County (Brereton Díaz 72' - nutmegged the last defender and curled one into the top corner from outside the box). Wrexham's scorer should have been sent off for nearly breaking Ebou Adams' ankle in the 8th minute. Northampton Saints 33-33 Exeter Chiefs (Feyi-Waboso 3', 68', Brown-Bampoe 42', Vintcent 54', 65' - Slade 4/5 conversions). 5th in the table. Ightham & Underriver Sunday XI 173-8 (35) v Selsdon 174-8 (34.5). Batted really nicely for not many runs before I had a brain fade. Bowled 0-23 from 6 overs before my 7th went for double figures (But I got a 'well bowled' from Tim Bentall). USA 13-15 Europe. Europe were 11.5 v 4.5 up before the singles matches, nearly threw it away but Lowry's put on the 18th retained the cup. Other news - England won the women's RWC, West Ham have sacked Potter and got Nuno in, Man Utd lost to Brentford, F*rest lost to Sunderland and the SCC end of season dinner ended up in a Tonbridge pub crawl. Good luck for the rest of the week x

USA 4 1/2. : Europe 11 1/2 2. 1/2 to retain, 3 to win. Got rather spicy in a couple of matches.

En route.

I have stopped at the Wetherspoons at Heathrow T5 and instantly regretted it.

It’s an exercise in data harvesting to sell you some flaccid toast. Refill coffee is a good idea until you taste it.

Now I understand why most people are drinking lager at 7-30 am.

I waved my checkin bag good bye 30 mins ago. Hopefully we will be reunited in Greece.

Amongst other treasures it holds my long handled titanium spoon.

An essential piece of kit that balances lightweight material and reassuring expense, with the ability to scape rehydrated chicken tikka out of the corner of a plastic bag.

What joys await.

I am keeping an eye out for any travellers who are wearing outsize trainers and lightweight backpacks.

They will either be fellow RTP ers , or else heading to the Camino.

Must dash to the boarding gate..

Shoes, Stains and Cheese

I fly to Athens tomorrow and then onwards travel to the race hotel near Marathon.

I am spectacularly under-prepared. As ever, life gets in the way and a cold (man flu) over the last 2 weeks has further dialled back my efforts.

I am trusting that muscle memory from events of yonder will kick in and propel me round the course, fuelled with a bag of sweets and a nice view.

If it all get’s too much I can just retire to a local Taverna for some Spanakopita and a cold Mythos.

Thankfully it is unlikely that I am pregnant, and as such I don’t need to take Bobby Brainworm and the Orange Gorilla’s ill-thought-out advice and skip the paracetamol.

In fact if they say something is bad for you, it is probably good for you, so I may double dose.

Other drug induced ways of flying around the 250km may be avoided. But thankfully I have now invested in a new pair of those Hoka Shoes. As a result I am 2 inches taller and can bounce around the Peloponnese like a blue footed Kangaroo.

The last time I herd of Vibram they we all in on rubber racing socks, and feeling the ground twixt your toes. They now seem to have embraced making trampoline soles like space hoppers.

Look forward to arriving tomorrow and spending a happy 24 hours packing and repacking a large amount of expensive and lightweight kit.

Albeit some of which I have been carting around deserts for 15 years. In an effort to avoid sewing new patches on tops I have dug out some old shirts from years past.

OK I may not look sharp on the start line, but they have a rich patina of aged lucky stains, and not all of which are unmentionable.

If I get hungry I can probably suck out the remnants of a dehydrated curry meal c2015. I am sure it will retain some nutritional value.

I will also crush a large packet of Salt and Vinegar crisps into a small packet of 1000 calorie dust. Eating really bad sh1t with a spork is one of an RTP’s great underrated pleasures.

I have not added cheese to my rations yet, as I reckon I can buy the best stuff locally.

Feta late than never

Hilarious! Your particular POV should also keep you entertained for at least a few spells out there. Fellow RTPer here wishing you lots of joy and adventure while you're out there. Re: not be pregnant - won't you be high the whole time anyway given altitude and elevation gains? Enjoy the float and all the best for the hop in your steps.

Greece is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Greece is the time, is the place, is the motion
Greece is the way we are feeling

Well the place will indeed be Greece, and the time will be in 36 days. Hopefully there will be some motion, although I am not sure it is how I am currently feeling.

By the look of the course across the Peloponnese, there will be plenty of mountains and valleys, albeit not a Frankie Valli.

As ever my training plans will kick in just in time to realise it is time to taper.

And, as the inevitable downward slope of time heads towards the upward slope of reality I hereby commit for the 12th time to make it the last time, until next time.

Somehow your training plans always seem to work out just fine. Glad you've noted the hills - but nothing worse than Hong Kong if your legs still have that muscle memory. Looking forward to seeing you for another last race.
