What are RacingThePlanet "Roving Races?"
RacingThePlanet’s Roving Races are unique ultramarathons that take place in different locations around the world, outside of their well-known 4 Deserts Ultramarathon Series. These races are designed to offer competitors a new and challenging environment each year, showcasing the diverse and stunning landscapes of our planet.
Key Features of RacingThePlanet Roving Races:
- Varied Locations: Unlike the fixed locations of the 4 Deserts Series, Roving Races are held in different countries each year. The first RacingThePlanet Ultramarathon, titled RacingThePlanet: Vietnam, routed competitors through the rice terraces of Sapa in northwest Vietnam. RacingThePlanet: Namibia 2009 then skirted Fish River Canyon and Skeleton Coast of Namibia. Then came races in Australia (2010), Nepal (2011), Jordan (2012), Iceland (2013), Madagascar (2014), Ecuador (2015), Sri Lanka (2016), Patagonia (2017), New Zealand (2019), Georgia (2021) and Lapland (2022). To celebrate our 20th anniversary, a special race was recently held in Jordan called RacingThePlanet: The 20-Year Race.
- Distance and Format: Similar to the 4 Deserts races, these events typically cover a distance of 250 kilometers (155 miles) over seven days. The race is divided into six stages, with one long stage that can be over 80 kilometers.
- Self-Sufficiency: Competitors must carry all their own gear, food, and supplies for the duration of the race. The organisers provide water and a place in a tent each night.
- Challenging Terrain: Each roving race is designed to test the limits of endurance athletes by featuring diverse and often rugged terrains. This could include mountains, forests, deserts, and coastal regions.
- Cultural Experience: These races also offer participants the opportunity to experience the local culture and environment of the host country, making each race a unique adventure.
RacingThePlanet Roving Races are perfect for those looking to reunite with past RacingThePlanet participants, tentmates or to meet like-minded individuals and to push their limits while exploring some of the most beautiful and remote places on Earth.
