"I'm comin' home, I've done my time Now I've got to know what is and isn't mine"

"I'm comin' home, I've done my time

Now I've got to know what is and isn't mine"

~ Tony Orlando and Dawn. Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree

I love this song. I think it express a longingness to be with our love ones.

Have been away from my family for eleven days and miss them dearly.

The race has been absolutely amazing in many different ways.

Before the race, I know not what I will get out of this experience. I just want to complete it. But through this journey, talking to fellow racers, I get to know them a bit better. Simple human beings with great values.

Rena San from Japan, quit her job to complete the 4 desert GrandSlam Plus. Looking at her trekking through the route is amazing.

Tadashi San (74) and Shinichi San (72), 70+ year old racers from Japan. Got the good fortune to sit beside Tadashi San in the plane to Rovaniemi. When you see him crossing the finishing line after 12 hours with a smile and a bow you can feel his tenacity.

Whenever I crossed paths with Shinichi San, in camp or on the race course, his smile will just lift your spirits. And you would want to just keep on going like he did.

Ahmed from UAE, who has been racing to raise awareness for organ donation in the GCC.

Pete, my giant tent mate who never fails to crack a joke to lift our spirits. He is a large man with a larger spirit. I only got to know that he was raising fund for his local charity after visiting his Facebook page.

Dr Woo from Korea, racing with his sons, helping to bandage fellow racer during the race.

The race has truly pushed me to my physical and mental limits. There are more than one time during the course that I thought of giving up. It was just so tough.

While this race depleted my "batteries" physically and mentally. Soaking in the good vibes, camaraderie, energy, tenacity and the human spirit is something that I have never experienced at this intensity previously.

Very grateful for this experience, I have so much beautiful memories of the place and people in this event. Thank you very much RTP!

Till next time!

The Long March

19 August 2022 05:24 pm (GMT+02:00) Helsinki, Kyiv, Riga, Sofia, Tallinn, Vilnius

“Step by step,

heart to heart,

left right left.

We all fall down

Like Toy Soldiers”

~ Martika, Toy Soldiers

Well, finally completed the monster stage of 80km! My first ultra distance! Advice from Riitta was great… not to look at the distance before the 40km mark… Did not even check my pace before 40km.

Popped pain killers at 40km and 60km to keep going… Last 10 was really mental. Was singing to myself the songs we sang during road marches back in my National Service. Asphalt road towards the end was a relieve for me as I am running in barefoot shoes.

Back at Camp site, the sauna and lake was great introduction to the Finnish culture. Absolutely love it! Amazing to alternate between the hot sauna and the 18 degrees lake. Such a great experience!

Thanks a lot RTP organisers!

Camp 1

14 August 2022 09:55 pm (GMT+02:00) Helsinki, Kyiv, Riga, Sofia, Tallinn, Vilnius

Well, no song lyrics come to my mind. Not thinking of much other than starting the race. From the briefing, Stage 1 will be a tough stage.

Talking to fellow racers have been very encouraging. Lifting from what Baldish from Canada shared with me. 3 wish for a race.

  1. For the perfect race where all the stars and everything are aligned.
  2. To cross the finishing line with a smile
  3. To be two steps ahead of the sweepers (to meet the race cutoff)

Makes sense right!? =D

So much for now. Will try to get a good night rest to be ready from tomorrow!

“Stand tall; stand proud! Voices that care are crying out loud”

13 August 2022 03:27 am (GMT+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore

"Stand tall; stand proud!
Voices that care are crying out loud

And when you close your eyes tonight

Feel in your heart how our love burns bright"

~ David Foster, Voices That Care

So many friends and family have left me words of wisdom, encouragement and support. Would like to share these golden nuggets of strength and wisdom with all.

"Every mile you take is a mile closer to the finishing line.

Every step you take is a step closer to the finishing line.

It is over only when you said it's over. Make it happen!" ~ Nicholas Khoo

"Race safely, always maintain communication with your body" ~ Dominic.

Reading these repeatedly to commit in memory. Notice that Dominic mentioned "communicate with your body" not just listen. I guess, in the coming week, there will be no lack of opportunities to practice mind over body.

"Buddy your a boy, make a big noise playing in the street ..."

"Buddy, you're a boy, make a big noise
Playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday ..."

~ Queen, We will rock you

No matter how old we are, we will always be our mama's boy/girl.

Knowing that I am traveling tonight for the race, Mum specially make a trip to visit me with ginseng water to shore up my vitality for the race! (Pardon the curcumin stained cup! =D). So grateful that my Mum is showing me support in her very own way. And I would like to thank all friends and family for your very encouraging words!

"All my bags are packed and I am ready to go ..."

"All my bags are packed and I am ready to go ..."

~ John Denver, Leaving on a jet plane

Feeling the pre-event jitters. Much like the day before my enlistment into National Service (NS) in Singapore.
I think this race will push me to my physical and mental limits like my NS days.

Flying off in 2 days. Wish me luck and will be grateful for your blessings!
