Excited, Nervous, and feeling lost as a First Timer...

07 December 2021 08:58 am (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)

Talk about feeling the range of emotions after hitting the submit button on my registration for the race.  From pure excitement to the adventure ahead to my nerves kicking in and thinking "OH MY GAWD, WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?!?".  Diving head first into the internet to research, as this being my first time at anything longer than a half marathon, hasnt really been easy or really helped since there is almost too much information to go over.  From the types of backpacks, calorie counting, layering of clothes, managing electrolytes, and the mosquitoes.... OH MY!!!

In reality, if there was a podium for the last 3 finishers, I will most likely be in the running... My only real goals are to enjoy the whole experience of this whole crazy adventure each day, all while testing my body its limits and a little bit beyond them too.

Either way I cant wait for this adventure, and to live by my race motto of "Operation: Just Finnish!!!" (Being that the race is in Finland...hehhehehehe)

I feel you brother! I am in the same shoes, as they say. Loved your play on words Just Finnish! High five many times. Hope I can make it to the training and will see you on the other side. Best always, Carmen C

Hey Brent - You are entering the race with the right mindset, which is to enjoy the experience! I was a first timer like you in my previous RTP race and felt very nervous. But if there is one sure shot tip I can give you to finish the race successfully, it will be to follow the plan provided by RTP on the website. There is a TON of information on every single aspect of the race covering packing, nutrition, hydration, foot care, sample training plans, strength training etc. Follow it diligently and you will be sure to finish. Attend the information sessions, read the articles and the books recommended and don't miss the small details. You will have a higher chance of finishing the race just this with information source! There are always the unknowns in any race, but RTP does an excellent job of preparing the participants for this endeavor. Look forward to seeing you in Lapland. You will enjoy being a part of this incredible tribe! Cheers!

Hey Brent, I look forward to your updates. Sounds like you have a perfect goal -- to just enjoy the experience. I remember when I went from a marathon to a 50 miler with no additional training. It's all about the state of mind. Good luck with your training and look forward to meeting you in Lapland. Mary
