Camp Rolling Sands to Camp White Tower

Camp White Tower, 5:25pm - The last two runners, Kiyoshi Kondou and Kazuo Isomura, both of Japan are the last to cross the line tonight after being on the course for just over 10 hours.  It was a long hot day.  Gary Baron says he measured 48C at one point on his thermometer as competitors slogged through a section of black desert.  The highlight of the day though was the oasis at CP2, which was a natural spring with pools of water and palm trees.  Some of the competitors got especially rousing cheers because of a Cairo International School 8th grade field trip that happened to be passing by in their caravan of cars.  They were out camping in the Sahara for a week and equally surprised to come upon a RacingThePlanet checkpoint out in nowhere.  Also 100m from this checkpoint, a pair of mummies was spotted up in a rock cave.  These are apparently over 700 years old and relatively untouched.

The breeze has picked up cooling everything off. The sun is setting on yet another spectacular evening in the Sahara. Toasted marshmallows are going to be served soon at the campfire.  But what is on everyone's mind is the 100km/60m stage for tomorrow.  This will kick off at 6am with a staggered start.

Stage 4, 8:50am - Runners are off on Stage 4.  It is predicted to be another scorcher but after yesterday's wind, it feels eerily calm.  Everyone seems in good spirits but a lot are thinking about the 100km/60m stage predicted for tomorrow.
