Stage 4 – Rally of the Pharaoh’s

Posted 4pm

Camp Black Desert is situated on soft beach sand and surrounded by black rock outcroppings. Viper trails were seen earlier so everyone is a little wary of going too far from camp. Still incredibly hot at 4pm and everyone is just waiting for signs that the sun is going down so that things begin to cool off. There is rumor there may be a midnight start for tomorrow's 80km stage so everyone is trying to get as much rest as possible.

Posted 1pm

The cool morning 5:30am start gave all a few hours of easier running and walking. Ray Zahab, Canada cruised through the course arriving at Camp Black Desert at 9:55am, Kevin Lin from Taiwan at 10:11 having overtaken American Joe Holland in the very last leg. Joe arrived at 10:20. The first woman to cross the line was Terry Schneider at 10:39am.

Stretching the Limits
Profile of a Runner: Christine Evans, Australia

By Mason Dwinell / Sahara Race 2005 Volunteer
September 28, 2005

The sunrises and some athletes cover incredible distances in the relative cool, and then as the heat begins to bake everything in sight other athletes stretch the preconceived limits of existence. The 30 year old Australian Christine Evans has had a taste of both. During the 42k second stage she found herself pushing her limits beyond her comfort…CLICK HERE for more…

Dr. Foot : Everybody’s Bestfriend
A Visit with Rob Conenello, Camp Podiatrist

By Elizabeth Cogar/Sahara Race 2005 Volunteer
September 28, 2005

Most novice campers would not consider making their first outing a trip across the Egyptian Sahara – most would take a quick overnight trip to a state park, hunker down in a shelter and quickly dash back to civilization early the next morning. But podiatrist Rob Conenello made a more daring choice for his first vacation without indoor plumbing…CLICK HERE for more…

About 40 of the field have now completed today's near marathon stage and people are now recuperating at camp. This will be a short update, as organizers look set to bring the start of tomorrow's killer 80km stage to 12 midnight (rather than 8am) due to the continuing record heat, so I need to chill.. From now we have approximately 11 hours to patch our feet, recover from today's race, eat as many calories as we can stomach and, if we are lucky, grab a few hours of sleep…Click here for more. Not much of a journal today, I have run out of words to describe how brutal this is. It’s mind numbingly monotonous. I’m so tired I’m so hungry, and I’m so weary, but tomorrow we only have to go 80km looking forward to it. Wait for my next one when I’ll be almost finished

Well at last day 4. I'm glad to have survived this tortuous race so far. When asked last night to write my day diary I decided to push hard to the first checkpoint. The field is so strong; I knew I could probably beat them all on 1 only. I did and dedicate it to my baby daughter Madison, who is 9 weeks old tomorrow CLICK HERE for more.

Today's winner is …..friction. The feet on these runners are truly something to behold. The friction between their feet and their shoes has caused blisters on every possible surface of their feet. CLICK HERE for more.

Overheard in the Desert

"My mom would kill me if she knew I was out here"

-Lawrence Baca, Sahara Race 2005 Competitor, taking a break in the shade of a checkpoint today.

“If it weren’t for the medical team, we wouldn’t be able to go back out every day for more torture.”

-Sahara Race 2005 Competitor
