Brian J. Krabak Brandee L. Waite Robert M. Conenello

The Sahara Race 2005 (Egypt) has a seven-person medical team led by Brian J. Krabak, M.D., a physician at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute in the United States, one of the leading hospitals in the world. Brian was a physician at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the medical director of the Gobi March 2005. Brian is supported by a world class group of medical personnel including Carolyn R. Anderson, Robert Conennelo, D.P.M., Sue E. Hume and Brandee L. Waite, M.D.

Medical Director
Brian J. Krabak, M.D., Maryland, United States

Dr. Krabak is the Associate Program Director for the Johns Hopkins Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program and Program Director for the Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Dr. Krabak came to Hopkins in 1998 after completing a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. He studied electrical engineering at Cornell University and attended medical school at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He completed his PM&R residency training at the New England Medical Center Hospitals, Tufts University. He completed his Master in Business Administration at the Johns Hopkins University in 2003.

Dr. Krabak's clinical interests include the non-surgical management of sports related injuries and spine rehabilitation. He has a special interest in the areas of running, cycling, swimming and Adventure Racing. He has provided physician coverage for many sports events locally and nationally, including the 2004 Athens Olympic Games (Aquatic Center), 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Games (Athlete Village), Johns Hopkins University Athletic Teams, 1998 Med-City Marathon (Co-Medical Director), 1997 Twin City Marathon, 1996 Paralympic Games and 1994-1997 Boston Marathon (Wheelchair Division).

Carolyn R. Anderson, Washington, United States

Carolyn is a nurse who is currently a Clinical Supervisor at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. She has 15 years of emergency/trauma experience and 10 years of outpatient care experience. She enjoys backpacking, kayaking, biking, and travel. Her introduction to the 4 Deserts came as a volunteer on the Medical Team at the Atacama Crossing in Chile. Carolyn's husband, James, is a competitor in the Sahara Race 2005 (Egypt).

Robert M. Conenello, D.P.M, New York, United States

Rob is a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine specializing in athletic injuries and biomechanics. He has been in private practice in New York for 13 years. He is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine.

He is currently a National Clinical Director for The Fit Feet program of The Special Olympics. Rob has had the opportunity to participate with this program in connection with the State, National and World Special Olympic Games. Rob was also fortunate to have the opportunity early in his career to train with the medical teams affiliated with NY/NJ professional sports programs.

Rob's interest in sports medicine also stems from his own participation in sports. He has competed in 10K and marathon racing and continues to participate in basketball and golf.

He is currently a consultant for many high schools and collegiate athletic programs in his area and is a volunteer for The New York and Boston Marathons.

Sue E. Hume, Wyoming, United States

Sue Hume is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner working as a nursing instructor at the University of Wyoming Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing. Sue was part of the Medical Team in the recent Atacama Crossing in Chile. Sue's husband, Brent, is competing in the Sahara Race 2005 (Egypt).

Brandee L. Waite, M.D., Maryland, United States

Dr. Waite is a Fellow and Faculty Member in Sports Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. She is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. Dr. Waite completed her residency at the Stanford University Medical Center. She was an event physician for the US National Track and Field Championships, Stanford Invitational Cross Country Meet and the NCAA Track and Field Championships.
