Ben works for Goldman Sachs in Tokyo. He began training for his first marathon on his 20th birthday in order to quit smoking soon after he started racing triathlons to learn how to swim. In 2000, after three years at Goldman Sachs in Asia he had gained 20 pounds and earned the nickname 'fatchops' from his boss. Ben started moonlighting as an athlete and completed three Ironman triathlons in 13 months. Work colleagues soon recruited him as a ringer for the 100km Maclehose in Hong Kong which he ended up doing twice. The Gobi March 2005 was his first multistage event which he found humbling. In the middle of the Turpan Basin he bet Joe Holland (5th overall at the Gobi 2005) 500 bucks that he would never race one of these events again. He regretted the bet soon afterwards and when he found out Joe had signed up for the Sahara race, decided he couldn't let him have all the fun. This will be Ben's second 4 Deserts race. |
