He read her account of heat, hunger, exhaustion and trashed feet and decided to follow in her footsteps - so he did the Marathon Des Sables in 1999. She is currently walking around the world but he is trying to avoid reading about it ... Laurie completed the Gobi March in 2003. This will be Laurie's second 4 Deserts race.

Joel is a Master Trainer at the East Bank Club in Chicago and owner of First Step Fitness, a personal training and kickboxing gym. Joel is an accomplished trainer and endurance athlete, as well as a seven-time Ironman Triathlon finisher. He achieved a personal best of 11:35 at the Ironman Triathlon in Florida in 2003. Joel has also completed ten marathons with a personal best of 3:09. Joel represented North America as part of Team Illinois in the Atacama Crossing 2004, and in the Gobi March 2005 and will again be representing the United States as part of Team Illinois. The Sahara Race will be Joel's third 4 Deserts event.

As of July 2005, he has completed 59 marathons and 126 ultra marathons, including 22 races of 100 miles or longer. He is a ten-time finisher of the Western States Endurance Run - America's most prestigious ultra marathon. He has also completed the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning in 1998; won the 1997 Pacific USATF Ultra Grand Prix, twice finished the 150 mile Spartathlon in Greece; finished the seven-day Marathon des Sables in Morocco, as well as the Gobi March 2003 in China. In his spare time, Rob is race director for the Ohlone Wilderness 50K Trail Run, and serves on the Board of Directors for the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. The Sahara Race will be Rob's second 4 Deserts event.
