Laurie, now retired, started running (jogging) in the early nineties His first London Marathon was in 1996, about the same time as Rosie Swale - Rosie Swale Pope - (also from Wales) completed the Marathon des Sables. He read her account of heat, hunger, exhaustion and trashed feet and decided to follow in her footsteps - so he did the Marathon Des Sables in 1999. Joel is an accomplished trainer and endurance athlete, as well as a seven-time Ironman Triathlon finisher. He achieved a personal best of 11:35 at the Ironman Triathlon in Florida in 2003. Joel has also completed ten marathons with a personal best of 3:09. He is a ten-time finisher of the Western States Endurance Run - America's most prestigious ultra marathon. He has also completed the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning in 1998; won the 1997 Pacific USATF Ultra Grand Prix, twice finished the 150 mile Spartathlon in Greece; finished the seven-day Marathon des Sables in Morocco, as well as the Gobi March 2003 in China. In his spare time, Rob is race director for the Ohlone Wilderness 50K Trail Run, and serves on the Board of Directors for the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. The Sahara Race will be Rob's second 4 Deserts event. |
